FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENTMAKING THE FIRST MOVE

When we are harmed by someone we sometimes hang on to the hurt in hopes that

the offender wi l l apologize. After al l , we are the ones who were injured, we have a

right to an apology. As we wai t for the contri te heart of the other person, our own

hearts become hardened wi th resentment, bi t terness, even hosti l i ty. As someone

once said, we become ?prisoners of our own hardened hearts?.

Although we may have the right to an apology, the Gospel story about the woman

caught in adultery suggests that sometimes we need to move past rights. In the story, the rel igious authori t ies

were ready to act wi thin thei r legal rights which said the punishment for a woman caught in adultery was to

stone her (John 8:1-11). By the law, they had every ?right? to smash that woman?s body wi th rocks and they

point this out to Jesus.

In a shocking move, Jesus does not deny thei r legal right to stone the woman, but he suggests that they, too,

might deserve to be punished because of thei r own sins. Not wanting to find out, they fled the scene. So there

he was, wi th a group who were ready to k i l l a woman because of her sin, and they could not even stay around

long enough to admit thei r own sins. Talk about being prisoners of hardened hearts.

Jesus did not say that the woman?s sin was alright. He stood there ready to forgive her, tak ing the risk that his

love would help her turn to her l i fe around. He does not ask us to ignore mistreatment or injustice. He

chal lenges us to look at how we deal wi th i t . Are we so perfect that we can pick up the biggest rock and throw

i t at those so much worse than we are who have wronged us? Jesus wants to free us from being prisoners of

our own hardened hearts that are wai t ing for somebody else to make the fi rst move.

The truth is, someone else has already made the fi rst move and that is Jesus who says to

us, ?Go in peace, and from now on avoid this sin.? Grateful for his forgiving love, maybe i t

is t ime for our softened hearts to make the fi rst move of lett ing someone who has hurt us

go in peace.

Cuando somos heridos por alguien, algunas veces tenemos la tendencia de mantenernos heridos o sentidos con la esperanza de que la persona nos pida perdón. Después de todo, fuimos heridos y tenemos el derecho a que nos pidan una disculpa. Mientras esperamos a el corazón l leno de remordimiento de la otra persona, nuestro propio corazón se endurece y se l lena de resentimiento, de un sabor amargo y hasta de coraje. Como dice el dicho, nos convert imos ?prisioneros de nuestros propios corazones endurecidos?.

Aunque tenemos el derecho a que nos pidan una disculpa, la parábola en el Evangel io de la mujer encontrada en adulterio, nos indica que en ocasiones tenemos que hacer nuestros derechos a un lado. En esta parábola, las autoridades rel igiosas estaban l istas para obrar dentro de sus derechos, los que decían que el castigo para las mujeres encontradas en adulterio seria apedreadas (Juan 8:1-11). De acuerdo a la ley, el los tenían todo el ?derecho? de t i rarle piedras a esta mujer hasta destrui rle el cuerpo y fue esto que el los le di jeron a Jesus.

Sorprendentemente, Jesus no les negó este derecho de t i rarle las piedras a la mujer, pero él les sugi rió que el los tal vez también merecían recibi r un castigo por sus propios pecados. Sin querer saber, el los se fueron. Así que al l í estaba el, con un grupo de personas l istos para matar a la mujer por su pecado y el los ni siquiera se quedaron para admit i r sus propios pecados. Esto nos da un buen ejemplo de ser prisioneros de un corazón endurecido.

Jesus no di jo que el pecado de la mujer estaba bien. Él se mantuvo al l í l isto para perdonarla, tomado el riesgo de que su amor fuera suficiente para que el la cambiara su vida. Él no nos pide a que ignoremos el maltrato o la injusticia. Él nos reta a ver como lo enfrentamos. ¿Somos tan perfectos que podemos escoger la piedra más grande y t i rarla a los que son peor que nosotros y que nos han hecho daño? Jesus nos quiere l ibrar de ser prisioneros de nuestros corazones endurecidos que estamos esperando a que otra persona haga la primera movida.

La verdad es que alguien ya hiso la primera movida y esa persona fue Jesus quien nos dice, ?Val lan en paz, y de hoy en adelante evi ta este pecado.? Agradecidos por su amor que nos perdona, tal vez sea t iempo para que nuestros corazones ablandados por ese amor, hagamos la primera movida y dejemos que esa persona que nos hi rió la dejemos i r en paz.
