A father and his l i t t le son were in thei r house when i t was engulfed in a huge

fi re. The boy was on the second floor. The house was ful l of so much smoke the

boy could not see his father. The father instructed the son to fol low his voice to

find the way out of the house. Eventual ly the boy came to the window of his

upstai rs bedroom where he could hear his father shouting to him from the

front yard below. ?Son, please jump!? the father shouted. The boy repl ied

saying, ?Daddy, I can?t see you. I?m afraid to jump!? The father said, ?Son, I know

you can?t see me, but I can see you. Please jump and I?l l catch you.? At that

moment, wi th great courage and trust, the boy jumped safely into his father?s arms.

Like the boy in the story, we sometimes fai l to take action because we are afraid of fai l ing, look ing stupid,

being cri t icized or being misunderstood. The truth is, sometimes that is exactly what happens. However,

none of these should be the reasons we do not do what needs to be done in our l ives. Jesus experienced a lot

of negativi ty when he took action in his l i fe. In the Gospel, when Jesus was heal ing, forgiving and work ing

other miracles in people?s l ives, he was cri t icized. Some said he was out of his mind. Others said he was

possessed by a demon (Mark 3:20-25). Yet he continued to carry out his ministry of l i fe-giving activi ty.

Fai l ing to take action can have devastating consequences. If the l i t t le boy in the story had not made that

frightening leap, he would have died. Poverty, hunger, racism and other social i l ls just get worse i f we are

unwi l l ing to fi rst admit they exist and then explore solutions. When we know someone is being abused or

mistreated and do nothing for fear of what wi l l happen to us, we become part of the

problem. In our personal l ives problems that go unaddressed in our marriages, in our

relat ionships, or wi th our health, just intensi fy.

Sometimes, l ike the boy in the story who could not see his father, i t is hard to see our

heavenly Father. Yet, our Father is always there. Where in our l ives might we need to

take a leap of fai th?

Chr ist Cat hedr al Par ish: Diocesan Chil dr en's Choir Summer Camp The thi rd annual Diocesan Chi ldren's Choir Camp is now accepting registrat ion for i ts summer program. The morning camp wi l l be held June 25-29 on the Christ Cathedral Campus in Garden Grove. Under the di rection of Christ Cathedral Music Director Dr. John Romeri , students wi l l develop choral singing, musical sk i l ls and l i turgical knowledge. Un padre y su hi jo pequeño estaban en su casa cuando se encontraron envueltos en un fuego enorme. El chico estaba en el segundo piso. La casa estaba l lena de tanto humo que el niño no podía ver a su padre. El padre instruyó al hi jo que siguiera su voz para encontrar la sal ida de la casa. Eventualmente el niño l legó a la ventana de su dormi torio que estaba en el segundo piso donde podía oír a su padre gri tándole a él desde el patio en frente de la casa. "¡Hi jo, por favor salta!" gri tó el padre. El chico respondió diciendo: "Papi , no puedo verte. ¡Tengo miedo de saltar! El padre le di jo, "Hi jo, sé que no puedes verme, pero yo si te puedo ver. Por favor salta y te agarraré." En ese

momento, con gran valor y confianza, el niño saltó a salvo en los brazos de su padre.

Al igual que el niño de la historia, a veces no tomamos acción porque tenemos miedo de fracasar, de parecer estúpidos, de ser cri t icados o de ser malinterpretados. La verdad es que a veces eso es exactamente lo que pasa. Sin embargo, ninguno de el los debe ser la razón por la que no hacemos lo que hay que hacer en nuestras vidas. Jesús experimentó mucha negatividad cuando tomó acción en su vida. En el Evangel io, cuando Jesús estaba sanando, perdonando y trabajando otros mi lagros en la vida de las personas, fue cri t icado. Algunos di jeron que estaba loco. Otros di jeron que estaba poseído por un demonio (Marcos 3:20-25). Sin embargo, el continuó l levando a cabo su ministerio de actividades que dan vida.

El no tomar medidas puede tener consecuencias devastadoras. Si el niño de la historia no hubiera hecho ese salto aterrador, habría muerto. La pobreza, el hambre, el racismo y otros males sociales sólo empeoran si no estamos dispuestos en admit i r primero que existen y luego explorar soluciones. Cuando sabemos que alguien está siendo abusado o maltratado y no hacemos nada por temor a lo que nos ocurri rá, nos volvemos parte del problema. En nuestras vidas personales los problemas que no se enfrentan en nuestros matrimonios, en nuestras relaciones, o con nuestra salud, sólo se intensi fican.

A veces, como el niño en la historia que no podía ver a su padre, es di fíci l ver a nuestro Padre celestial . Sin embargo, nuestro Padre siempre está ahí. ¿Dónde en nuestras vidas podríamos tener que dar un salto de fe?
