In seeking God, what are we looking for? Sometimes we look for God to help us make sense out of the past. Other t imes, we pursue God to give us hope for the future. Whi le both of these have thei r place, i t is best to start wi th an Epiphany focus. An Epiphany focus temporari ly puts aside the past and the future. Epiphany means to discover something right now, in the present. It is a revelatory moment. It is seeing something ei ther for the fi rst t ime, or look ing at something we have known before in a whole new way.

The Magi in the Gospel had an Epiphany focus (Matthew 2:1-12). They saw the star in the east and they fol lowed i t immediately. They did not delay by ask ing where the star came from or where i t was leading. They knew the star was important and off they went, they could ask questions about i t later. Fol lowing the star, eventual ly they arrived where Jesus was born and laid eyes on him for the fi rst t ime. Immediately they saw that they were in the presence of the Divine so they responded wi thout hesi tat ion by giving him gi fts. They did not ask how the chi ld could help them make sense out of thei r past or what he could do for them in the future. Those questions could come later. For the moment, they knew they were in God?s presence and they responded accordingly.

Discovering Jesus? presence in our l ives needs to begin wi th now. Wondering about the past or frett ing about the future can distract us from discovering him in the moment. If we are hurt ing now, we need to know that we can be soothed and strengthened now. The why questions can come later. If we are gui l ty now, we need to know that we can be forgiven now. Questioning why we did what we did or how we wi l l behave in the future can wai t. If we are feel ing alone now, we need to know that the Lord is wi th us now. What got us to this lonely place or i f a lonely future is ahead does not real ly matter at the moment.

It seems l ike look ing for God would be much easier i f we had the clari ty of a star to guide us. We have something better than a star. We have today and the stuff of our own l ives. It is in these l ives and i t is today that God can fi rst be found.

¿Cuándo buscamos a Dios, que es lo que esperamos? En veces, lo buscamos cuando queremos ayuda con si tuaciones del pasado. Otras veces le pedimos a Dios a que nos de fe en si tuaciones del futuro. Aunque estas dos cosas t ienen su t iempo dentro de nuestras vidas, lo mejor es comenzar con una Epi fanía como enfoque. Este t ipo de enfoque hace que temporalmente pongamos el pasado y el futuro a un lado. Una Epi fanía signi fica el descubri r algo en este momento, el presente. Es un momento de revelación, como ver algo por primera vez o ver algo que ya conocemos en otra manera completamente.

Así es como les paso a los Reyes en el Evangel io, tuvieron en enfoque de Epi fanía (Mateo 2:1-12). Vieron la estrel la asía el oeste y la siguieron de inmediato. No t i tubearon preguntando de donde había l legado la estrel la ni asía donde los guiaba. El los sabían que la estrel la era de importancia e iniciaron su camino, después podrían hacer preguntas si las tuvieron. Al seguir la estrel la, l legaron finalmente al lugar del nacimiento de Jesús y lo vieron por primera vez. Inmediatamente, el los supieron que estaban en la presencia de algo Divino y sin dudar le presentaron los regalos que l levaban. No le pidieron expl icación de lo que les había pasado ni lo que vendría en el futuro. En ese momento, el los sabían que estaban en la presencia de Dios y respondieron debidamente.

Debemos descubri r la presencia de Jesús en nuestras vidas ahora. Al dudar de nuestro pasado o al preocuparnos del futuro no puede distraer de conocerlo en este momento. Si estamos sufriendo en estos momentos, tenemos que saber que podemos recibi r la calma y la fuerza que necesi tamos. Las preguntas se pueden hacer después. Si tenemos alguna culpa, tenemos que tener la certeza que podemos ser perdonados. El porque nos comportamos como somos en el pasado o como nos comportaremos en el futuro, son preguntas que pueden esperar. Si nos sentimos solos en estos momentos, tenemos que saber que Dios está con nosotros. Los eventos que nos l levaron a ese lugar de soledad y si el futuro nos trae soledad no es importante al momento.

Tal parece que sería más fáci l si tuviéramos la claridad de una estrel la para guiarnos asía Dios. Pero la real idad es que tenemos algo aún mejor que una estrel la. Tenemos lo presente y todo lo de nuestras propias vidas. Podemos encontrar a Dios en todo lo que tenemos hoy en el presente y en todo esto podemos encontrar a Dios.
