THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT CLEANING TEMPLES LIMPIANDO TEMPLOS

What happens when you go to church and discover that al l sense of respect and reverence for God, people and sacred space is being abused and violated? If you are Jesus in the Gospel, you get angry and start cleaning things up. He arrived at the temple to begin the celebration of Passover. What began as a service to the people, the sel l ing of animals for the ri tual observances, turned into a ci rcus. Merchants were over charging the people and cheating them in making change. Al l sense of decorum and respect for the temple was gone. So Jesus cleared everyone out (John 2:13-35).

The Gospel invi tes us to consider the temples that may need cleaning in our l ives. For starters, where do we need to do some cleaning in the temples of our personal l ives? Maybe arrogance needs to be cleaned out as we are sure we are the only ones who have i t r ight. How about our att i tudes about people? Has some prejudice about others crept in? In l ight of recent violence, might we be giving up on the goodness of humani ty? How about our mindsets about money and accumulating things? Have we become intent on amassing more and more? What might be holding us back from loving the way we could, or receiving somebody else?s love?

How about the temple of the world? Maybe we need to clean out a mental i ty that sees human beings only through the eyes of someone?s usefulness to us. We increasingly prize pol i t ical victory over the common good. The loudest voice or whoever gets in the headl ine fi rst is more important than wise counsel that is everywhere i f we wi l l just l isten.

Why clean these and other temples? To make room for the redeeming power and presence of God in our world. Sometimes things sound fool ish and naive, l ike a world that renounces the violent solution, respects the digni ty of human l i fe and promotes a more equal distribution of the world's goods. But then again, a supposed Messiah hanging dead on a cross sounded fool ish too (I Cor. 1:22-25). Unti l he was not dead anymore. Unti l the power of God?s love raised him up victorious over sin and death. Sounds l ike i t is t ime to get cleaning.

PAZ Y JUSTICIAEl próximo fin de semana, 10 y 11 de marzo, después de todas las Misas de fin de semana, habrá una mesa afuera del Arboretum con representantes del ministerio de Paz y Justicia. Por favor de pasar por su mesa a fi rmar una carta que será enviada al Gobernador Brown pidiéndole que cambie las sentencias de los que viven en prisión con la pena de muerte a vida en prisión sin ninguna posibi l idad de l ibertad condicional.

¿Qué sucede cuando vas a la iglesia y descubres que todo sentido de respeto y reverencia hacia Dios, la gente y el espacio sagrado está siendo abusado y violado? Si ustedes son Jesús en el Evangel io, se enojan y empiezan a l impiar las cosas. Llegó al templo para comenzar la celebración de la Pascua. Lo que comenzó como un servicio a la gente, la venta de animales para las celebraciones ri tuales se convi r t ió en un ci rco. Los vendedores cobraban más de lo indicado a la gente y los engañaban en el cambio. Todo sentido de orgul lo y respeto por el templo se había ido. Así que Jesús despejó a todos (Juan 2:13-35).

El Evangel io nos invi ta a considerar los templos que pueden necesi tar l impieza en nuestras vidas. Para empezar, ¿dónde necesi tamos hacer algo de l impieza en los templos de nuestras vidas personales? Tal vez la arrogancia necesi ta ser l impiada, ya que estamos seguros de que somos los únicos que t ienen razón. ¿Qué hay de nuestras acti tudes sobre la gente? ¿Se ha colado algún prejuicio sobre otros? A la luz de la violencia reciente, ¿podríamos estar renunciando a la bondad de la humanidad? ¿Qué hay de nuestras mental idades sobre el dinero y la acumulación de cosas? ¿Hemos l legado a tener la intención de acumular más y más? ¿Qué nos puede estar reteniendo de amar como podemos amar, o en recibi r el amor de otra persona?

¿Qué hay del templo del mundo? Tal vez necesi tamos l impiar la mental idad que ve a los seres humanos sólo a través de los ojos del beneficio de alguien para nosotros. Premiamos cada vez más a la victoria polít ica sobre el bien común. La voz más fuerte o quien se pone en el t i tular primero suele ser más importante que el sabio consejo que está en todas partes si sólo lo escuchamos.

¿Para qué l impiar estos y otros templos? Para hacer espacio al poder redentor y a la presencia de Dios en nuestro mundo. A veces las cosas suenan tontas e ingenuas, como un mundo que renuncia a la solución violenta, respeta la dignidad de la vida humana y promueve una distribución más equi l ibrada de los bienes del mundo. Pero, un supuesto Mesías que colgaba muerto en una cruz también sonaba un poco tonto (ICor. 1:22-25). Hasta que ya no estaba muerto. Hasta que el poder del amor de Dios lo levantó victorioso sobre el pecado y la muerte. Suena como que es hora de empezar a l impiar.
