PALM SUNDAY: THE PASSION OF OUR LORD

Rector?s ColumnA DIFFERENT HOLY WEEKPalm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week. This week we call to mind the unconditional love of Jesus who gave his life for us. Commemorating the events that led to our salvation, we set our sights on celebrating the Lord?s? victory over sin and death on Easter Sunday. In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, one might ask how the week ahead could possibly be holy, given the suffering, fear, uncertainty and isolation this crisis has caused?

The circumstances of any given time in history do not dictate whether we observe the redeeming actions of God?s steadfast love. We do not cancel Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter or Pentecost because wars, natural disasters, acts of terror or terrible il lnesses disrupt the normal order of doing things. However, such circumstances at t imes call us to adjust our prescribed and usual ways of making the observance.

This Holy Week we are asked to stay at home. The distribution of blessed palms will have to wait until another time. Absent will be the public celebration of the inspiring Chrism Mass on Monday, the beautiful Mass of the Lord?s Supper on Holy Thursday, the poignant Liturgy of the Lord?s Passion on Good Friday, the great Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday night, the glorious Mass on Easter. We priests will celebrate these liturgies without our beloved people present with us, as we have been doing these past weeks (and we miss you so much!). The faithful, if they have such access, will view these sacred liturgies from the pews of their l iving room sofas and chairs. Those who cannot connect through the internet will be left to imagining their participation in these holy rituals which many look forward to every year.

We need this Holy Week. During these days, let?s go to church in our hearts. Let?s take with us family, friends, doctors, nurses, patients with the virus and families of those mourning those who have died. Let?s pray more than ever. Pray the rosary with those in our homes. Name out loud people we are remembering in prayer. Let?s sing holy songs of praise and hope. Until returning to the altars of our churches, let?s make a space for an in-home altar, a special place where we put a bible, a candle, a statue of Mary or of a saint, some f lowers, photos, or art, all call ing us to connect with Jesus and each other.

The coronavirus has not canceled Holy Week, it has changed it. The victory of Jesus over sin and death can never be canceled and we are changed because of it. That is the meaning of Holy Week, even one so very dif ferent.

El Domingo de Ramos marca el comienzo de Semana Santa. Esta semana nos trae a la mente el amor incondicional de Jesús que dio su vida por nosotros. Conmemorando los acontecimientos que condujeron a nuestra salvación, nos enfocamos en celebrar la victoria del Señor sobre el pecado y la muerte el Domingo de Pascua. En medio de la pandemia del coronavirus, uno podría preguntarse ¿cómo es que la próxima semana podría ser santa, dado el sufrimiento, el miedo, la incertidumbre y el aislamiento que esta crisis ha causado?

Las circunstancias de un dado momento en la historia no dictan si observamos las acciones redentoras del amor inquebrantable de Dios. No se cancela Adviento, Navidad, Cuaresma, Pascua o Pentecostés debido a las guerras, los desastres naturales, los actos de terrorismo o las terribles enfermedades que alteran nuestro orden normal de hacer las cosas. Sin embargo, tales circunstancias a veces nos piden ajustar nuestras formas prescritas y habituales de hacer la observancia.

Esta Semana Santa se nos pide que nos quedemos en casa. La distribución de las palmas benditas tendrá que esperar hasta otro momento. Ausente de los feligreses se celebrará la inspiradora Misa del Crisma el lunes, la hermosa Misa de la Ultima Cena del Señor el Jueves Santo, la conmovedora liturgia de la Pasión del Señor el Viernes Santo, la gran Vigil ia Pascual del Sábado Santo por la noche, la gloriosa Misa de Pascua. Los sacerdotes celebraremos estas liturgias sin que nuestro querido pueblo esté presente con nosotros, como lo hemos estado haciendo estas últimas semanas (¡y nosotros los extrañamos mucho!). Los f ieles, si t ienen el acceso, verán estas liturgias sagradas desde los bancos de sus sofás y sil las en la sala de su casa. Aquellos que no pueden conectarse a través del internet se quedarán a solo imaginar su participación en estos rituales sagrados que muchos esperan con ansias cada año.

Necesitamos esta Semana Santa. Durante estos días, vayamos a la iglesia en nuestros corazones. Llevemos con nosotros a la familia, amigos, médicos, enfermeras, pacientes con el virus y familias de aquellos que lloran a los que han muerto. Recemos más que nunca. Recemos el rosario con los que están en nuestros hogares. Nombremos a las personas que recordamos en oración.Cantemos canciones sagradas de alabanza y esperanza. Hasta volver a los altares de nuestras iglesias, hagamos un espacio para un altar en casa, un lugar especial donde ponemos una biblia, una vela, una estatua de María o de un santo, algunas f lores, fotos, o arte, todo llamándonos a estar Unidos con Jesús y con nosotros mismos.

El coronavirus no ha cancelado la Semana Santa, la ha cambiado. La victoria de Jesús sobre el pecado y la muerte nunca puede ser cancelada y nosotros somos diferentes debido a esto. Esto es el signif icado de Semana Santa, aun cuando es una muy diferente.

Spir it ual Communion St. Thomas Aquinas described spiritual communion as ?an ardent desire to receive Jesus in the most holy sacrament and lovingly embrace him at a time or in circumstances when we cannot receive him in sacramental Communion.?

The basic elements of an act of spiri tual Communion1. Express to the Lord your faith in his merciful love and his real presence in the Eucharist.2. Make an act of love. O, Lord God, I love you above all things?3. Express your desire to receive him.4. Invite Jesus to come into your heart spiritually.

The following is a traditional prayer of spiritual communion attributed to St. Alphonsus Liguori:My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Blessed Sacrament. I love you above all things and I desire you with all my heart. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, I ask you to come spiritually into my heart. I embrace you as if you were already in my heart and unite myself to you completely. Please do not let me ever be separated from you. Amen.
