Friday, October 28, 2011. You could feel Emily Shippee’s smile all the way across thering; her mare was letter-perfect. Applause rose around them, as the tri-color and therose garland’s red ribbons unfurled in the breeze of CSP Gisele’s victory pass. Headhigh, ears up, the pretty chestnut moved with an easy elegance, her action elevated andexciting but silky-smooth, the picture of country English pleasure today. The pair hadjust won the U.S. National Championship in that division’s Maturity competition.

“CSP Gisele is a complete representative of what we are,” observes Chris Wilson ofChriShan Park, the full-service Arabian operation he and his brother, Shan, run inSpringfield, Mo. Shan trains the mare, who was bred by Chris and sold first as a 2-year-old, and then again the following year to Emily Shippee, a client for more than15 years. Gisele is by Mamage, Shan’s first national champion, and out of MHRMartinna, a full sister to MHR Marteen, Chris’ first open purebred national champion.

That’s the object, Chris adds—to breed, sell (or buy, as the case may be), train, win andmake happy customers. CSP Gisele is one of many from the ChriShan Park breedingand training program, with and without the identifying initials, who have found theirway to the winners’ circle.

The ChriShan Park StoryA lot has happened since Chris and Shan Wilson first arrived at a farm called PineCrest, not far from where they lived, in the 1970s. They were just kids then, boys withan obvious talent for working with horses, but no formal technique; while they had ridden their grandfather’s Missouri Fox Trotters, they were especially proficient as theharum-scarum partners of a pair of ponies. The farm was a Saddlebred establishment, sotheir riding instruction was in saddle seat, and surprisingly, it was a natural fit. Thechallenge of the stylish, leg-waving English trot was right up their alley, and it hasremained their focus ever since, in careers that propelled them to the forefront of theArabian industry’s English performance division.

The year 1997 saw the start of the Half-Arabian Second Editions Debut’s careerwith Shan—an incredible run of 18national championships, four reserves andsix top tens. And in 1998, Chris nailedthe U.S. National Championship inEnglish Pleasure with MHR Marteen, whoby the time he retired had a record ofeight national championships, one reserveand four top tens.

Those were only a few of the headlinerswho made the brothers’ names in the1990s. Many others in their barns woreroses as well, and there were championsyet to come. While working at CedarRidge, in Jordan, Minn., Chris wouldchoose a 3-year-old named Starr Llight for

The Wilson brothers started young, theirearliest training clients arriving when theboys were still in high school. Chrisearned his first national top ten in 1982,with the native costume horse NMRaramus, and Shan his first in 1992, withthe Half-Arabian English mare, DancingSlippers. They maintained a training barnwhile they attended college, each havingthe foresight to earn a business degree, buttheir priority remained the show ring.Over the years, their lives would take separate paths (Shan remained at the family’s home base in Missouri, whileChris sought experience elsewhere), butthey paralleled each other in their rise tonational recognition. By the mid-1990s,both were knocking down U.S. National

Championships in English Pleasure, both purebred and Half-Arabian. Moreimportant than the titles, however, werethe horses who were winning them.

Shan hit first in 1995 with Mamage, whoin a 14-year career would rack up ninenational championships, six reserves and16 top tens in English pleasure, park anddriving (junior horse, open, amateur andjunior exhibitor competition). In 1996,Chris answered with Minni Moons Star,U.S. National Champion in Half-ArabianEnglish Pleasure, a gelding who eventually accounted for four nationalchampionships, five reserves and 10 toptens in the English and park divisions. See a trend here?

a young rider named Leah Beth Boyd anddirect the mare to her first nine nationalchampionships and reserves. Then therewas Toi Jabaska, selected after she had finished top ten in the English Futurity;under his guidance, she won the first fourof her amazing 10 national champi-onships, a record that ended only becauseshe was retired to the Cedar Ridge’sacclaimed broodmare band.

It was no surprise that Chris was namedAPAHA Male English Trainer of the Year, and Shan was nominated for the award, aswell as for Horseman of the Year.

Successful as they were, however, therewas one last step to come. The brothershad started out training together—hadeven inaugurated ChriShan Park at theold Pine Crest facility, which Shan pur-chased in 1990. But then Chris had goneon the road, training for five years withLyric Laughlin at Ridgemont, in DesMoines, and then moving on for anotherfive at Cedar Ridge. In 2003, he hadopened his own facility, a secondChriShan Park location, in Kansas City.It was not until 2010 that the Wilsonbrothers came full circle when Chrismoved home to Springfield.

On the surface, it might appear that noth-ing fundamental has changed at ChriShanPark. Yes, there is a new barn, a newarena, another trainer and a longer rosterof horses—but the real attraction of aWilson operation remains the same: thehigh-class horses, the successful training, the honesty and open communication arestill in place. With both Chris and Shanin one location, however, their years ofcomplementary experience have lent anew depth to their program, both in thetraining barn and the breeding operation. The net result is an Arabian operationthat is at the same time familiar andalight with new potential.

Today’s Breeding ProgramAlthough Chris and Shan Wilson have been best known for their show ring performance, their interest in breeding is not new; Shan, especially, bred horses duringMamage’s residence at the farm. He is now reinvigorating his program, while Chris fine-tunes the plans he set in motion a dozen years ago when he began collecting maresexpressly to breed for English performance.

“I guess it’s my breeder mentality, but I like to create and develop great mares,” saysChris. That was part of his affinity for Toi Jabaska, he reflects. He believed not only inher ring ability, but also in the role she could play in the Cedar Ridge breeding program(an assessment that has been borne out in the mare’s progeny). MHR Martinna, dam ofCSP Gisele, is a seven-eighths sibling to MHR Nobility and a particular favorite. Now21, she is one of his foundation broodmares.

He loves developing good mares, he says simply. They deserve the attention and thechance to reach their potential. As a result, the farm has been home to many greatmares over the years, some of whom have responded by scoring not only in the showring, but as top-class producers as well. Chris recalls two full sisters whose careers helaunched: MD Aquarius and MD Pro-Aequus, both national champions before going onto more triumphs elsewhere; the farm now is home to two promising youngsters fromMD Pro-Aequus. Years ago, Shan trained Barbarys Angel to several national honors, and today her daughter CSP Angelfire is the dam of a talented Mamage colt. Cover girlCSP Gisele already has produced a hot young filly by Vegaz, and will be bred back.

And then there is Infinity CSP, a Mamagedaughter Shan bred and trained tonational honors; at ChriShan Park now isher A Temptation daughter, CSP Viva LaVida. Chris, observing Viva La Vida intraining with his brother, likens her toStarr Llight at a similar stage in life. “Ican’t wait to breed her to Vegaz andCaymon, and see what happens,” he smiles.

“Successful breeding doesn’t happen in ayear or two,” he says of the patiencerequired for astute breeding. “For English,it may take five years. They’re conceived, foaled, trained as 2- or 3-year-olds, go intothe ring as 4- and 5-year-olds—really, it’sabout a seven-year cycle for one marebefore you see if she will have good babiesthat have credibility in the show ring. And if you have to make adjustments, trydifferent stallions, that adds another three orfour years. Breeding is a long-term deal.”

Mamage was ChriShan Park’s foundationstallion. Now, moving into phase two oftheir breeding program, the senior stallionis Kenneth and Susan Knipe’s Vegaz, a 9-year-old son of Apollopalooza, from anMHR Nobility daughter. Developed andshown by Chris, he has twice been nameda national champion in English pleasure(in the Futurity and as a junior horse),and in 2010 was the U.S. NationalReserve Champion in open competition.

“I think he’s potentially one of the greatest stallions our breed has ever seen,”Chris says, “and I feel like he is also goingto be an outstanding broodmare sire. Hispedigree encompasses a lot of history, butin a very new way, and he is a horse physically designed for English pleasure. He’s short-backed and tight-coupled, hehas the correct angle on his hind legs, andhe’s got long front legs. He’s upright, has asoft-bending neck and a very open shoulder,

and he has a very trainable attitude. He’sthe complete package, more than any stallion I’ve been exposed to, and I’vetrained a lot of different horses by a lot ofdifferent stallions.”

The first Vegaz foals came into the ringlast year, and netted a national reservechampionship, two top tens in theEnglish Futurity and two top tens in theHalf-Arabian Country Futurity.

Also on the stallion roster is Chris’ DSMick Jagger, by Matoi and out of JJ SiouxHope. “Mick Jagger’s percentages are out-standing,” says Chris. “Out of only ninefoals from his first two crops, he had apurebred go national champion as a 4-year-old in both of those crops. He’s agifted, special horse, tall and necky andlong-legged.” DS Mick Jagger saw moreaction before the advent of Vegaz, but heacquitted himself so well that the Wilsons

ferrara

Page 7: ChriShan Park - The Full Package

are anticipating using him on Vegazdaughters when those fillies come of age.

Another breeding option in the arsenal isXanthuss, a 5-year-old son of MagnumPsyche, from Cedar Ridge’s gold standardbroodmare Ames Mirage, who is a full sib-ling to two English national champions.Owned by Britomar Ltd., Xanthuss offersan extremely upright neck and impressivebeauty, while still maintaining athleticability through Ames Mirage’s sire, Brass, and her dam, an Afire Bey V daughter. With Shan, Xanthuss won the ScottsdaleSignature English Pleasure Futurity as a 4-year-old, and is slated for country Englishpleasure junior competition this year.

And finally, the farm offers the homebredCSP Grand Caymon, another horse who, like CSP Gisele, reflects ChriShan Parkconnections in his pedigree. He is byMamage, and out of JJ Sioux Hope, whosedamline is remarkably similar to that ofToi Jabaska. Just 4, he will welcome hisfirst foals in 2013, and is expected todebut in national competition this year.

Looking at the focus now in the ChriSanPark breeding program, Emily Shippeesees the key to its potential. “What we’veseen from the breeding program are really

quality horses who are built to do theirjob,” she says. “What Chris and Shan seein Gisele is what they’ve been striving for, which is a pretty, quality, built-to-do-its-job horse with a great mind and attitude too, which makes their job a whole lot easier.”

In The Training Barn“Chris and I each have our own styles,”Shan Wilson says, “but we pretty muchget the same results.”

He fields questions about techniquepatiently. “Usually I’m pretty quick tohave them go around, take hold of thebridle, walk, trot and canter, and then Ifollow up with finessing and getting earsand so forth,” he says. “But it’s ever-changing with every horse. There aresome where it works better if you get theirears early in the game, get them payingattention to their job, and entertain thema little bit.” He smiles. In other words, one size doesn’t fit all.

In evaluating a horse, what tells him thatit is an English prospect? “More oftenthan not, it’s if they have good hocks anda soft poll—if they’re high-headed, with asoft, flexible neck, and everything else is

good, if not extreme,” he replies. “If youdon’t have one that can bridle really welland has some good locomotion frombehind, it makes it a lot harder. But if youget a really good neck and a nice hindend, you can usually make at least a goodcountry horse out of it, although thesedays, a country horse also has to trot quite a bit.”

Like any other performance barn,ChriShan’s training involves not onlyhorses, but people—amateur riders, manyof whom have been with either Chris orShan (or both) for years. Their approach,Emily Shippee relates, begins before a customer even climbs into a saddle—maybe even before a horse enters trainingfor either open or amateur. “When some-one brings a horse to CSP, they are veryupfront and honest about whether thehorse has potential,” she says. “If theythink so, they do a great job in developingand training the horse while keeping theclient up to date on what’s going on.Sometimes the horse may not be the rightfit for what the client is looking to do,and if that’s the case, Shan and Chris areupfront about figuring out the next step.

“They do a great job of fitting the horseto the rider,” she continues. “Once that isdone, they are good teachers. They arevery inclusive and open about the train-ing process. They keep you informed, which is a great thing particularly whenyou’re not close. You don’t need to knowevery detail, but you can trust they haveyour best interest in mind.”

“I think we’re pretty positive,” Shan says, and adds that part of working with ama-teurs is nurturing a new rider’s confidence.“You say ‘good’ probably five times beforeyou start saying, ‘a little more of this, alittle more of that.’ A lot of riders, as theyget older and have shown with youlonger, don’t need that, but for theyounger ones and the beginners, whomight not know they’re good at it yet, alot of encouragement helps.”

He considers what has changed abouttheir program over the years, and concludes that probably the years of experience have yielded more attention to equine care and management. “As youget a little older, hopefully you get a littlewiser,” he says. “You think more abouthow much you work them, how much

time off you give them, their nutrition, and your farrier and vet care. It’s veryimportant to get good at that, because asit gets more and more competitive, allthose details play into whether or not youwin a national championship.

“It’s a challenge to get a really great horseturned out,” he says. “But once you’veseen a really great one go around the ring, that’s what you want to do.”

The PeopleAnyone who has spent much time in theEnglish division of the Arabian horseindustry can tick off a list of headlinehorses that have come out of ChriShanPark. Perhaps less noted is a roll call ofpeople who have been associated with theWilson family and gone on to make amark in the industry. Leah Beth Boyd, winner of the 2011 U.S. NationalChampionship in English Pleasure on

Starr Llight, comes to mind quickly; shestarted with Chris and Lyric Laughlin atRidgemont, as did Alexis Scott, who nowmaintains a lesson program in DesMoines. Boyd remained with Chris for 15years and was an assistant trainer atChriShan Park before moving on to hercurrent position at Cedar Ridge. SelectShow Horses’ Kellie Wendling, a multi-national champion whose students havewon national honors, rode with Shan, andElise Worman, who coaches national-level exhibitors at Liberty Meadows, start-ed at ChriShan Park with instructor LibbyFerguson. And the list goes on.

Emily Shippee points out that the clientfactor at ChriShan Park extends beyondthe realm of potentially-professional.“They attract the kind of people that Ilike to have for friends,” she says. “I go out there for both the horses and the people.”

The Future?Keep raising the bar, say Chris and ShanWilson. “Strive for excellence,” Chrissays. “It sounds like a cliché, but we arebreeding our future success.” There maybe little tweaks they hope to introduce tothe program: they would like to hire ahunter trainer, and they would like anexpanded riding lesson program, with itsown instructor (“I think lessons are criti-cal for the industry as a whole,” Shannotes). But for the most part, they justwant to further develop what they dobest—breeding, training, and marketingnational-caliber horses. And pairing eachof their amateurs with horses that notonly can take a rider to success at thehighest levels of competition, but in theprocess, also allow them, in the words ofEmily Shippee’s father Tom, to “just havefun with it.”

How did you get started in Arabians? My mom had horses growing up andalways liked the pretty Arabians. Wefound a small Arabian barn down theroad from our home, where I first tookriding lessons at the age of 6. I’ve beenriding ever since.

Aside from your parents, who has beenthe most influential individual(s) in yourinvolvement with the Arabian horse? From my beginnings at Ridgemont Stableswith Lyric Laughlin Phillips and ChrisWilson, to riding under Shan Wilson, Iwas given encouragement, support andknowledge. You can’t do it alone. Lyricand Chris gave me the strong foundationof learning the technical skills of riding,as well as learning the behavior of horses. It is really a team sport, and everyonecontributes to the journey of showinghorses competitively.

What are your interests outside of horses? I’m a corporate tax accountantand CPA with PwC in Boston, so my freetime is limited. Having horses in Missouri,I try to use my occasional free weekends toeither get to the barn or make it to a show.

How did you become associated with the Wilson family? Through Chris Wilson while at Ridgemont. He was a greatteacher, very gentle and patient withbeginners—kind, yet firm, in teaching usthose basic skills of riding. I wasinevitably introduced to Shan through ahorse he was helping us with. I began riding with him and have also grown fromhis guidance. There are always challenges, successes and disappointments, but thereis an attitude of “okay, we have things towork on, but it’s not the end of the world;it’s the nature of showing.” Chris andShan also emphasize being gracious andusing good sportsmanship in and out ofthe show ring. The clientele the Wilsonfamily attracts are people that I enjoybeing around, and I have many lifelongfriends from showing. Chrishan Park islike a second family to me.

What piece of advice would you give tothe 10-year-old version of yourself? In the words of my dad before every class:“Just have fun with it!”

What is the best part of showing for you?Entering the horse show bubble and leaving reality behind!

How did starting in a lesson program prepare you to be the amateur you are today? Lyric’s lesson program fostered many riders to showbecause of her encouragement, as well asChris’ training of the show horses in thesame barn. It was easy for lesson riders tokeep their goals in sight. That was a greatcombination that made it easy for ridersto progress into competitive showing.Aside from the technical skills and learning how to “read” the horse as arider, we learned everything from theground up. We got our horses ready byourselves and rode various horses for thelessons. This taught us that all horsesaren’t the same, and you have to adjust toeach one. We attended local Arabian funshows where “fun” was the emphasis. Weregularly had group lessons, so each riderwasn’t always under the microscope ofLyric or Chris, which allowed the riderthe chance to independently figure outthe solution to a problem. Lessons werealways conducted with the utmost respectfor each rider’s level and abilities. Theywere lessons to build confidence and skills.

What are you most excited about thisshow season? I have some younger horsescoming up this show season. It will beexciting to learn about the strengths andareas of work needed for each horse. I’malso excited to show CSP Gisele again, asshe continues to mature. She certainly madefor a thrilling year last year! Success for me isseeing my horses do better and better and, hopefully, becoming top competitors.

CSP Gisele - 2011

What have you learned from riding and showing that has helped you in other areas of your life? In particular, flexibility and adaptability. There are so many variables that demandadjustments in both life and showing horses competitively. In showing horses, your horse may be different when youenter the arena, the weather may not beoptimal, and an errant horse may swerve inyour path to suddenly alter the circum-stances in the ring. Then there are changeswithin ourselves—whether being tired oron your game! All of these elements andmore are obstacles that must be dealt within a quiet, calm manner. We are routinelyforced to make re-adjustments throughoutthe class as change occurs. Dealing withchange in real life is a daily part of living, and adapting to change makes for successin both business and private life.

Special thanks and appreciation to: From the very beginning, my parents have been mybiggest supporters. My mom has ridden all her life, though didn’t start showing until a few years before Istarted. She has always served as a role model forpresence and grace in the arena. My dad, who cer-tainly would not have been considered a “horse guy”at the beginning, has always been 100 percent sup-portive of my showing. In fact, now he actuallyenjoys going to horse shows, hearing about the youngprospects, and watching my classes. He has evendeveloped a pretty good eye, much to Mom’s and mysurprise! My parents have also been instrumental inhelping me juggle work and showing in these last fewyears. Without their support, I would not be able tolive halfway across the country from my horses andstill manage to make showing possible. In addition tomy parents, I would like to give a special thank youto Shan for always being open, honest, and upfrontwith me. Regardless of the issue, I trust Shan’s adviceand know that he has my best interests in mind.
