Thank you to all for the many messages of “Good Luck” and the interest shown in the 1st Edition of “In
The Zone”. There were a few gremlins in the Edition with the main error being the email address for
Publicity!!!! The proof reader (me) is on a warning to lift his game! Please ensure you have or hand out
the correct address [email protected]
Photographs – I am happy to use photographs of Championship & tournament winners and to make it
easier for all, if you could please add names to identify each person shown. Also although mobile
phones take a good picture, they are a PHONE!!! The the use of a REAL camera gives a much better
image but all will be used where possible, please send them in.
Chris Wallace the newest member of BA CDO team
Bowls Australia announced recently the newest member of its 16-strong Community Development
Officer team, Chris Wallace, who takes up the mantle as CDO for metropolitan Sydney. Chris joins Bowls
Australia with a vast experience in financing and accounting, including roles at multi-national
corporations such as IBM, his latest position as the Global Financing Accounting Manager, and also an
extensive background in the sport itself.
Chris is currently the Vice President of The Hills Bowling Club in Zone 10, was previously the bowls
coordinator at the club in a full-time position for a four-year period from 2007 to 2011, and remains a
member of Zone Match and Selection Committees. With a Bachelor of Economics (Accounting) to his
name, and his intimate knowledge of the sport at a club and zone level, Chris is well placed to assist the
150-odd clubs within his portfolio.
He commenced the role on Monday, June 17, replacing Chris Green, who has transitioned back to his full
time position at Bowls NSW after more than a year-and-a-half as an integral part of the CDO team. Zone
10 & Bowls Australia congratulate Chris on his appointment as the CDO for metropolitan Sydney and
wish him well with his new role.

ROYAL NSW BOWLS MAGAZINE
An update on the “new” Bowls Magazine. The 1st issue is not planned at this stage to be published until
September and this will be a special edition with a full wrap of the State Pennants. The plan is that the
Magazine will be sent in bulk to every Club in NSW and then you can collect your copy from your Club
next time you are there. Not quite as convenient as the “old” system, but the costs were very high this
way and it is hoped that the new way will result in a considerable saving. Ideally the Magazine would
be totally on line and that would allow you to get the most up to date information quickly but in
practicality, we are a sport that has an elderly base and the world of internet/email is a very distant
thought for too many. Hopefully in near years to come, with the world evolving as quickly as it does,
more and more of our bowlers will have access to email and the “print” version will be a thing of the
past, just like Dunlop’s and Classic 2’s!!!! – still seen but are fewer and fewer and hard to handle!! BUT –
for those who do have access to internet, the “Around The Zones” feature that we all look for will be
updated on a regular basis and you can see this by logging onto and I hope this will give you your “fix”
for news from all other Zones within NSW – but for Zone 10, the information you see here will be more
detailed and current – so stay in the zone, with IN THE ZONE!!!! http://www.rnswba.org.au/news/around-the-zones
Please be advised that a Bowling magazine is currently being circulated via bowling clubs in NSW.
The magazine is called Bowls Plus NSW, this magazine is not affiliated with RNSWBA.
The person publishing this magazine is targeting advertising to the retiree demographic, with general
bowling and lifestyle stories and not stories relating directly to the NSW bowing community.
Please let your clubs and any interested persons know that this magazine is not the official publication of
the Royal NSW Bowling Association.
Club Director / Secretary Manager Training
Club director and secretary/manager training
New mandatory training requirements for registered club directors and secretary/managers
commence on 1 July 2013. Special arrangements for directors of small clubs will apply – see
below.
Club directors
Existing club directors
If you are appointed as a club director before 1 July 2013, you will have until June 2016 to
complete your training. If you cannot undertake training, you can continue to serve your term
before the training deadline comes into force.
New club directors
If you are appointed as a club director on or after 1 July 2013, you must complete your training
within 12 months of your appointment.
Small clubs
Small clubs will need to have at least two of their directors trained from June 2016 onwards. This
means that not all directors of small clubs will need to undertake training. Small clubs are those
with annual gaming machine profits of one million dollars or less.
Large clubs
Large clubs will need to have the majority (ie more than 50 per cent) of their directors trained by
June 2016. All directors of large clubs will need to be trained by June 2018. Large clubs are those
with annual gaming machine profits of more than one million dollars.
Focus of training
The focus of club director training will be on board operations and club finances, and aligned to
the relevant national units of competency.
Club secretary/managers
Existing club secretary/managers
If you are appointed as a club secretary/manager before 1 July 2013, and have three or more
years current experience with any registered club, you will not be required to complete the
training.
If you have less than three years current experience, you will have until 30 June 2015 to complete
the training.
"Current experience" will be defined in the guidelines referred to below (see Recognition of prior
learning).
New club secretary/managers
If you are appointed as a secretary/manager after 1 July 2013, and do not have three or more
years current experience as a secretary/manager of any registered club, you will be required to
complete your training within two years of your appointment.
These requirements will not apply if you are a club secretary/manager who is appointed in an
honorary capacity and are also a director of a club.
Focus of training
The focus of secretary/manager training will be on board governance and the role of the club's
secretary/manager.
Recognition of prior learning
You will not have to complete training as a director or secretary/manager if you have recognised
prior skills or learning. The Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing will develop guidelines
outlining the types of skills and qualifications that will be recognised. It is expected that these
guidelines will be issued in April 2013 following further consultation with the club industry.
Access to training
ClubsNSW will help clubs adapt to the new requirements by offering the prescribed director
training modules online for free to its members. The director training modules may also be
offered by other registered training providers.
Club secretary/managers must undertake training conducted by the Club Managers' Association
Australia, or any other governance training that is deemed to be equivalent by the Director
General, Trade and Investment.
Good Luck to all players representing Zone 10, their Clubs and more importantly themselves in the State
Pennants Finals. There are many, many bowlers that have been playing for years and years that have
never had the chance to experience this event – make sure you take your chance with both hands and
give the best you have in every game – but more importantly, enjoy the opportunity and the experience
and the friendships that our great game gives. GOOD LUCK!!!!

The West Pennant Hills Grand Final of the Major Pairs was played under clear skies on Saturday 6th
July. Both teams started out keeping each other in check, with the margin between the teams kept to a
couple of points. About two thirds through the game, Pete & Kevin picked up a 6 point end followed by
a few more winning ends to break away from Brian and Bob. Final score line showed a clear win by
Peter & Kevin, 22-13 over Brian & Bob. Congratulations to Peter & Kevin.

CHALLENGE CUP – West Pennant Hills v Pennant Hills
Two years ago, during discussions between West Pennant Hills and Pennant Hills, a suggestion was
made that both clubs should play against one another every year to see which is the best club. As both
clubs are located close to one another and have always considered themselves to be the superior club,
there needed to be a challenge and the Challenge Cup was born. All bowlers, regardless of their grade,
are able to play though there are restrictions to limit team stacking. The Challenge Cup is played over a
full day and the club that has the highest score at the end of play is the winner. Of course lunch and
refreshments are included which allows more bragging to be done based on the current score at the time.
Each club takes turn in hosting the event. In 2012, Pennant Hills was first. The final margin between the
two clubs was 8 points with Pennant Hills winning on the day. In 2013, West Pennant Hills took revenge
and won by 9 points. Obviously, Pennant Hills will be out to win in 2014 but it is safe to say West
Pennant Hills will spoil the party.
Terry Rae & Peter Eagle (Men’s BC Presidents)
West Pennant Hills 2013 Men’s Major Singles Final
What a match between Peter Eagle & Keith Robinson. The first 9 ends were virtually point for point with
each player on 8 shots, Peter winning 4 ends and Keith 5. From then until 20th over, it appeared Keith
was going to run away with another title, winning 7 of 11 ends. However, Peter was not about to let
Keith off that lightly, picking up the next 4 ends claiming 9 shots to take the score after 24 ends to 24:23 to
Peter. The next 7 ends were a battle of concentration. On one end, Keith was holding 3 shots only to see
Peter draw the perfect shot through Keith’s front bowls to claim 1. Final score Keith 31 to Peter 29.
A very good match between the 2 best players in the club at the moment. Thanks to Warren Phillips
(marker) and Michael Schwarcz (umpire) for their work making sure this match ran smoothly.
2013 Major Singles Champion, Keith Robinson, and Runner-up, Peter Eagle
"Finals day at Brush Park"
Over 90 spectators braved a a chilly Sunday recently to attend the Brush Park BC Singles Finals . The
evergreen Ron Palmer defeated a determined Tony Bromley 31-19 in the major final while in the minor
section Barry Connors , having led 29-16, had to overcome a tenacious comeback from Eric Van Uden to
win 31-29
.
Barry Connors & Eric Van Uden Tony Bromley & Ron Palmer
Footnote on Ron Palmer: The great man just keeps on going. Since taking up bowls in 1976 Ron has won
51 club championships, several zone titles and has made multiple representations for Zone 10 and the old
Zone 9. Ron has also done his fair share of work for club bowls --President of Eastwood BC (6 years),
President of Ryde Eastwood BC (7 years) and recently Vice Chairman of Brush Park BC (3 years). At 83
years of age he is still good enough to skip in Grade 2 this pennant season (and Grade 1 in 2012). A man
who has rated sportsmanship and fair play above anything else Ron still enjoys the competition and
companionship that the great game of bowls offers --- and he claims his best years are in front of him!
Under stunning bright blue sunny skies, the 64th PHBC Birthday Carnival was held Monday 1st July and
with a big representative of visiting bowlers from Zone 10 and Zone 9 clubs joining the locals from
PHBC, a great day was had by all. Huge thank’s goes to Sponsor Ross Gulisano from Alto Pennant Hills.
Winners were West Pennant Hills team of Keith Robinson, Peter Eagle & Kevin Ross. Runners Up from
Harbord Colin Tetsall, Jim Dowd & Graham Tetsall
Last Saturday 13th July, saw the final of Castle Hill's Men's Triples played with Darryl Martinez, Tony
Martinez and Danny Phillips (pictured) victorious over Gary Bernsdorff, Craig Williams and Craig Sleigh
24-22.
