This studio project completed in 2013, under the tutelage of Prof. Luis Feduchi and Jonathon Kopinski, explored the role of architecture in establishing dialogues between specific loci, histories and contem-porary material cultures.

The Centre for Gong as a type explores traditional construction meth-ods, materiality and production of bricks, tiles and paving as speci-fied by the Yingzao Fashi, China’s traditional construction guide. The program of the type revolves around the history of Jade artefacts and artisans in the area.

The site is that of the Liangzhu cultural Burial site of Huiguanshan, located in Pingyao. This rural town was rich in history of Jade articles from the Dongtia River to workshops in the south before the final product was buried as artefact to the deceased. This type is con-strained within the traditional Well-Field system used to delineate 1.1 ha of agricultural land in China.

Terra incognita examines a proposal that developed from the heritage of Murwillumbah, the arrival sequence and the materiality, present and past. These interests de-veloped a base for initial research which looked at the town’s activity nodes, urban zones and forgotten program.

Terra Incognita explores a style of multi use archi-tecture which could be integrated in the town to im-prove the identity and disconnection of spaces.

Brick materiality was chosen specifically to reference the surrounding context as an envelope with a timber framed insert delineating the change in use and scale. The placement of the program in Proudfoot Lane acts as a catalyst for a unified CBD block which addresses the high-way traffic and informs the address of the true main street. .
