The first meeting of school council for the year was held on 27 March 2013. Elections for office-bearers were held, and the results are listed (refer layout). Council members were also appointed to the Finance, Buildings and Grounds, Fundraising and Canteen subcommittees.

Geoff gave a brief report on enrolment issues - the average class size at Gold Street this year is 24.1, which is an excellent result.

The major decision to have come out of the meeting is that Council approved in principle the building of a Science Centre. The plans, drawn up by architects Clarke Hopkins Clarke, will shortly be put to tender, withthe intention that building will commence in Term 3 and be completed in time for the 2014 school year. The Science Centre will be at the rear of the Organ Factory, and will be a one-storey structure containing a laboratory classroom and storage facilities for science equipment. The staff at the meeting spoke with great enthusiasm and passion about the wonderful learning opportunities that the Science Centre will offerour children.

The Council’s fundraising efforts for 2013 will be focussed on the building and fit-out of the Science Centre and we look forward to the support of the school community in this. Any ideas or initiatives for fundraising would be warmly welcomed!

We are keen to ensure that the school community is kept informed of Council’s decisions and activities. Councillors can be contacted via the email addresses on the school’s website.

French Apps for Kids

French CornerLast term we listed a few apps for your iPad that could be fun for some of the younger French students at Clifton Hill Primary School. This week we will focus on the older grades.

• Qui est-ce? (Guess who I am) - this is great for practising describing people. The app will probably default to English. Just touch the Union Jack to change the language.

• Marvel Reads: The Amazing Spiderman, les origines – any student interested in comics will enjoy this app. Again, it will probably default to English. Touch the Spidey head in the bottom left hand corner in order to change the language to French.

• Mes mots à moi – drop and drag letters to spell words in French.

• Les Deskplorers – this is available in French and English.A fun history app for 7-11 year olds.

• J’aime lire – original stories in French for more advanced students.

• Radio Française (Fredo) – allows you to listen to a great number of French radio stations – you can pick the genre of music and swap around stations if you don’t like what’s playing.

Paris to Provence

This is a little save the date notice that the highly anticipated Melbourne French Festival, Paris to Provence, will be taking place from the 22 to 24 November this year. Pop it in your diary now!
