Americans Debate Republicanism

• Colonies each had own agendas, people associated w/colonies, not country

• Republicanism• Gov’t based on consent of people

• State constitutions– Similarities: rights of citizens, emphasis on

liberty– Differences: right to vote

• NJ: loophole allowed women right to vote

• Foreign-relations problems– British creditors unpaid, British military stayed in forts– Spanish closed off access to Mississippi R.
