CHORAL EVENSONG SUNG BY THE CATHEDRAL GIRLS’ CHOIR

18.00

PRECES Plainsong

Please sit for Psalm 100 sung by the choir

O be joyful in the Lord all ye lands: serve the Lord with gladness, and come before his presence

with a song. Be ye sure that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us and not we ourselves, we

are his people and the sheep of his pasture. O go your way into his gates with thanksgiving, and

into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and speak good of his Name. For the Lord is

gracious, his mercy is everlasting: and his truth endureth from generation to generation.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning, is now,

and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

THE FIRST LESSON Malachi 3: 16 – 4:6

MAGNIFICAT EDWARD BAIRSTOW (1874–1946), EVENING SERVICE IN E FLAT

THE SECOND LESSON Mark 9: 9-13

NUNC DIMITTIS EDWARD BAIRSTOW, EVENING SERVICE IN E FLAT

RESPONSES Plainsong

THE COLLECT, OF THE DAY

O Lord Jesu Christ, who at thy first coming didst send thy messenger to prepare thy way before

thee; Grant that the ministers and stewards of thy mysteries may likewise so prepare and make

ready thy way, by turning the hearts of the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, that at thy second

coming to judge the world we may be found an acceptable people in thy sight, who livest and

reignest with the Father and the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

THE COLLECT OF ADVENT

Almighty God, Give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness, and put upon us the

armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life, in which thy Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in

great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious Majesty to judge both

the quick and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who liveth and reigneth with

thee and the Holy Spirit, now and ever. Amen.

ANTHEM

Tomorrow shall be my dancing day,

I would my true love did so chance

To see the legend of my play,

To call my true love to my dance.

Sing, O, my love, my love, my love

This have I done for my true love.

Then was I born of a virgin pure,

Of her I took fleshly substance,

Thus was I knit to man’s nature,

To call my true love to my dance.

Sing, O, my love, my love, my love

This have I done for my true love.

In a manger laid and wrapp’d I was,

So very poor, this was my chance,

Betwixt an ox and a silly poor ass,

To call my true love to my dance.

Sing, O, my love, my love, my love

This have I done for my true love.

CHORAL EVENSONG SUNG BY THE CATHEDRAL CHOIR

18.00

PRECES Bernard Rose (1916–1996)

PLEASE SIT FOR PSALM 89: 1–4, 19–26 SUNG BY THE CHOIR

My song shall be alway of the loving-kindness of the Lord: with my mouth will I ever be shewing

thy truth from one generation to another. For I have said, Mercy shall be set up for ever: thy truth

shalt thou stablish in the heavens. I have made a covenant with my chosen: I have sworn unto David

my servant; Thy seed will I stablish for ever: and set up thy throne from one gener ation to another.

For the Lord is our defence: the holy one of Israel is our King. Thou spakest sometime in visions

unto thy saints and saidst: I have laid help upon one that is mighty, I have exalted one chosen out of

the people. I have found David my servant: with my holy oil have I anointed him. My hand shall

hold him fast and my arm shall strengthen him. The enemy shall not be able to do him violence: the

son of wickedness shall not hurt him. I will smite down his foes before his face: and plague them

that hate him. My truth also and my mercy shall be with him: and in my Name shall his horn be

exalted. I will set his dominion also in the sea: and his right hand in the floods.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning, is now,

and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

ANTHEM

A tender shoot has started up from a root of grace,

as ancient seers imparted from Jesse's holy race.

It blooms without a blight, blooms in the cold bleak winter

turning our darkness into light.

This shoot, Isaiah taught us, from Jesse's root should spring.

The Virgin Mary brought us the branch of which we sing:

Our God of endless might gave her this child to save us,

thus turning darkness into light.

PRECES Plainsong

OFFICE HYMN

Hark the glad sound! the Saviour comes,

The Saviour promised long!

Let every heart prepare a throne,

And every voice a song.

He comes the prisoners to release

In Satan's bondage held;

The gates of brass before him burst,

The iron fetters yield.

He comes the broken heart to bind,

The bleeding soul to cure,

And with the treasures of his grace

Enrich the humble poor.

Our glad hosannas, Prince of peace,

Thy welcome shall proclaim,

And heaven’s eternal arches ring

With thy belovèd name.

Tune: Bristol

Thomas Ravenscroft’s Psalmes, 1621 Philip Doddridge (1702–1751)

PLEASE SIT FOR PSALM 113 SUNG BY THE CHOIR

Praise the Lord ye servants: O praise the Name of the Lord. Blessed be the Name of the Lord: from

this time forth for ever more. The Lord’s Name is praised: from the rising up of the sun unto the

going down of the same. The Lord is high above all nations: and his glory above the heavens. Who

is like unto the Lord our God that hath his dwelling so high: and yet humbleth himself to behold the

things that are in heaven and earth? He taketh up the simple out of the dust: and lifteth the poor out

of the mire; That he may set him with the princes: even with the princes of his people. He maketh

the barren woman to keep house: and to be a joyful mother of children.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning, is now,

and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

ANTHEM

In the bleak mid-winter

Frosty wind made moan;

Earth stood hard as iron,

Water like a stone;

Snow had fallen, snow on snow,

Snow on snow,

In the bleak mid-winter

Long ago.

Our God, heaven cannot hold him,

Nor earth sustain;

Heaven and earth shall flee away

When he comes to reign.

In the bleak midwinter

A stable place sufficed

The Lord God Almighty,

Jesus Christ.

Enough for him, whom cherubim

Worship night and day,

A breastful of milk

And a mangerful of hay;

Enough for him whom angels

Fall down before,

The ox and ass and camel

Which adore.

What can I give him,

Poor as I am?

If I were a shepherd,

I would bring a lamb,

If I were a Wise Man,

I would do my part,

Yet what I can, I give him,

Give my heart.

Harold Darke (1888–1976) Christina Rossetti (1830–1894)

THE PRAYERS

THE CLOSING HYMN

during which a collection may be taken up

Hills of the north, rejoice,

Echoing songs arise,

Hail with united voice

Him who made earth and skies:

He comes in righteousness and love,

He brings salvation from above.

Isles of the Southern seas,

Sing to the listening earth,

Carry on every breeze

Hope of a world’s new birth:

In Christ shall all be made anew,

His word is sure, his promise true.

Lands of the East, arise,

He is your brightest morn;

Greet him with joyous eyes,

Praise shall his path adorn:

The God whom you have longed to know,

In Christ draws near, and calls you now.

Shores of the utmost West,

Lands of the setting sun,

Welcome the heavenly guest

In whom the dawn has come:

He brings a never-ending light,

Who triumphed o’er our darkest night.

Shout, as you journey on,

Songs be in every mouth,

Lo, from the North they come,

From East and West and South:

In Jesus all shall find their rest,

In him the sons of earth be blest.

Tune: Little Cornard Editors of the New English Hymnal, based on

M.F.E. Shaw (1875–1958) Charles E. Oakley (1832–1865)
