The people remain seated during the introit.

introitHail, gladdening light Charles Wood (1866-1926)

Hail, gladdening light, of his pure glory poured, who is the immortal father, heavenly blessed.Holiest of Holies, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Now we are come to the Sun’s hour of rest. The lights of evening round us shine. We hymn the Father, Son and Holy Spirit divine.Worthiest art thou, at all times to be sung, with undefiled toungue.Son of our God, giver of life alone. Therefore in all the world, thy glories, thy glories Lord, they own.

(John Keble 1792-1866)

The people stand as able at the introduction to the hymn.

phos hilaron Ronald Arnatt (1930-2018)O gracious Light, pure brightness of the everliving Father in heaven,O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed! Now as we come to the setting of the sun,and our eyes behold the vesper light,we sing your praises, O God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. You are worthy at all times to be praised by happy voices,O Son of God, O Giver of life, and to be glorified through all the worlds.

psalm 85:7-13 Sung by the choir. chant: C. Hubert H. Parry (1848-1918)

Show us your mercy, O Lord, and grant us your salvation.I will listen to what the Lord God is saying, for he is speaking peace to his faithful people and to those who turn their hearts to him.Truly, his salvation is very near to those who fear him, that his glory may dwell in our land.Mercy and truth have met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other.Truth shall spring up from the earth, and righteousness shall look down from heaven. The Lord will indeed grant prosperity, and our land will yield its increase.Righteousness shall go before him, and peace shall be a pathway for his feet.Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

first lesson Read by Daniel Weatherholt. Colossians 3:1-4, 12-17If you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth, for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory. As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

magnificat Sung by the choir. Charles V. Stanford (1852-1924)

My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. (Luke 1:46-55)

second lesson Read by Benjamin Bynum. Luke 17:11-19On the way to Jerusalem Jesus was going through the region between Samaria and Galilee. As he entered a village, ten lepers approached him. Keeping their distance, they called out, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” When he saw them, he said to them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were made clean. Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice. He prostrated himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him. And he was a Samaritan. Then Jesus asked, “Were not ten made clean? But the other nine, where are they? Was none of them found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?” Then he said to him, “Get up and go on your way; your faith has made you well.”

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

nunc dimittis Sung by the choir. C. V. Stanford Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word, For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people, To be a light to lighten the Gentiles, and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. (Luke 2:29-32)

the apostles’ creed Said by all.

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

collects

The cantor sings a series of prayers, each followed by a choral Amen.

O God, our heavenly Father, who didst raise up thy faithful servant Chilton, to be a bishop and pastor in thy Church and to feed thy flock: Give abundantly to all pastors the gifts of thy Holy Spirit, that they may minister in thy household as true servants of Christ and stewards of thy divine mysteries; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

O God, who didst lead thy holy apostles to ordain ministers in every place: Grant that thy Church, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, may choose suitable persons for the ministry of Word and Sacrament, and may uphold them in their work for the extension of thy kingdom; through him who is the Shepherd and Bishop of our souls, Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

O God and Father of all, whom the whole heavens adore: Let the whole earth also worship thee, all nations obey thee, all tongues confess and bless thee, and men and women everywhere love thee and serve thee in peace; through our Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Let the people praise thee, O God;Yea, let all the people praise thee.

O let the nations rejoice and be glad,For thou shalt judge the folk righteously,And govern the nations upon earth.

Then shall the earth bring forth her increase,And God, even our own God, shall give us his blessing.

God shall bless us and all the ends of the world shall fear him.

God be merciful unto us, and bless us:And shew us the light of his countenance,And be merciful unto us.That thy way may be known upon earth:Thy saving health among all nations.
