Wendy Ernesta Woolliams was born in Folkestone in October 1932. After

a joyful and peripatetic childhood in Kent, Middlesex, Gloucestershire and

Scotland, she trained as a nurse in London (not an ideal vocation given her

propensity to pass out at the sight of blood). Following a brief stint teaching at

her former school in Folkestone, she fell in love with and married the vicar, Ian

White-Thomson, in 1954. When he became Archdeacon of Northumberland the

following year, they moved to Newcastle where three of their children

– Stephen, Lucy and Morwenna – were born. John arrived in 1963, the same

year that Ian was appointed Dean of Canterbury and the family relocated to

Kent. Thirteen very happy years were spent in the Deanery (often referred to

as the ‘Wendy House’) before their retirement to Wye in 1976. After Ian’s

death in 1997, Wendy continued to live at Camphill, surrounded by family (12

grandchildren and four great-grandchildren) friends and animals. She had an

extraordinary zest for life and was a beacon of generosity and kindness, much

loved by all those fortunate enough to know her.

Old Testament Reading Isaiah 35

The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad,

The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it, the majesty of Carmel and Sharon.

They shall see the glory of the Lord, the majesty of our God.

Strengthen the weak hands,

and make firm the feeble knees. Say to those who are of a fearful heart,
