Please join in singing the hymns and in saying the words printed in bold type.

GATHERING IN GOD’S NAME Please stand

2

Christ has our host surrounded with clouds of martyrs bright who wave their palms in triumph and fire us for the fight. For Christ the cross ascended to save a world undone, and suffering for the sinful our full redemption won.

3

Down in the realm of darkness he lay a captive bound, but at the hour appointed he rose a victor crowned, and now, to heaven ascended, he sits upon the throne in glorious dominion, his Father’s and his own.

St Columba (521-97) tr. Duncan Macgregor (1854-1923) alt.

Australian Hymn Book 123

THE GREETING AND BIDDING

The president welcomes the people and says: Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God’s kingdom, now and forever.

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Let us pray: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Please sit or kneel

Choir Lord have mercy upon us, Christ have mercy upon us, Lord have mercy upon us.

The Liverpool Service – Noel Rawsthorne (1929-2019)

God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy, welcoming sinners and inviting them to the Lord's table. Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness.

Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE HYMN OF PRAISE (GLORIA) Sung by the Choir Please stand

Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God’s people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Rawsthorne – Liverpool Service

THE COLLECT

Faithful God, have mercy on us your unworthy servants, and increase our faith, that, trusting in your Spirit’s power to work in us and through us, we may never be ashamed to witness to our Lord but may obediently serve him all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Please sit

FIRST READING: Lamentations 1.1-6 Read by Jill Morshead

1How lonely sits the city that once was full of people! How like a widow she has become, she that was great among the nations! She that was a princess among the provinces has become a vassal. 2 She weeps bitterly in the night, with tears on her cheeks; among all her lovers she has no one to comfort her; all her friends have

4

dealt treacherously with her, they have become her enemies. 3 Judah has gone into exile with suffering and hard servitude; she lives now among the nations, and finds no resting-place; her pursuers have all overtaken her in the midst of her distress. 4 The roads to Zion mourn, for no one comes to the festivals; all her gates are desolate, her priests groan; her young girls grieve, and her lot is bitter. 5 Her foes have become the masters, her enemies prosper, because the LORD has made her suffer for the multitude of her transgressions; her children have gone away, captives before the foe. 6 From daughter Zion has departed all her majesty. Her princes have become like stags that find no pasture; they fled without strength before the pursuer.

Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

LAMENTATION 3: 19-26 Please sing the response after the cantor, then as indicated

The thought of my affliction and my homelessness is wormwood and gall: My soul continually thinks of it, and is bowed down within me. But this I call to mind: and therefore I have hope.

Response The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases: his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning: great is your faithfulness. ‘The Lord is my portion’ says my soul: ‘therefore I will hope in him.’

Response The Lord is good to those who wait for him: to the soul that seeks him. It is good that one should wait quietly: for the salvation of the Lord.

Response

Plainsong New: Philip Nicholls

SECOND READING: 2 Timothy 1.1-14 Read by Canon Neil Sigamoney

1Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, for the sake of the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus, 2 To Timothy, my beloved child: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

3 I am grateful to God—whom I worship with a clear conscience, as my ancestors did—when I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day. 4Recalling your tears, I long to see you so that I may be filled with joy. 5I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that lived first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, lives in you. 6For this reason I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of my hands; 7for

5

God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline.

8 Do not be ashamed, then, of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner, but join with me in suffering for the gospel, relying on the power of God, 9who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works but according to his own purpose and grace. This grace was given to us in Christ Jesus before the ages began, 10but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Saviour Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. 11For this gospel I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher, 12and for this reason I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know the one in whom I have put my trust, and I am sure that he is able to guard until that day what I have entrusted to him. 13Hold to the standard of sound teaching that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. 14Guard the good treasure entrusted to you, with the help of the Holy Spirit living in us.

Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

THE GRADUAL HYMN Please stand

Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest, sun, moon and stars in their courses above, join with all nature in unspoken witness to your great faithfulness, mercy and love. Great is your faithfulness …

6

Pardon for sin and a peace that’s enduring, your living presence to cheer and to guide, strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow – these are the blessings your love will provide. Great is your faithfulness …

Thomas Obadiah Chisholm (1866–1960) alt. Together in Song 154. Reproduced by permission

THE GOSPEL Remain standing

The Cantor introduces the acclamation, then all repeat:

Cantor O give thanks to the Lord and call upon his name: tell among the peoples what things he has done. Alleluia!

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

The Holy Gospel our Lord Jesus Christ according to St Luke: 17.5-10 Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ!

5The apostles said to the Lord, ‘Increase our faith!’ 6The Lord replied, ‘If you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, “Be uprooted and planted in the sea”, and it would obey you.

7‘Who among you would say to your slave who has just come in from ploughing or tending sheep in the field, “Come here at once and take your place at the table”? 8Would you not rather say to him, “Prepare supper for me, put on your apron and serve me while I eat and drink; later you may eat and drink”? 9Do you thank the slave for doing what was commanded? 10So you also, when you have done all that you were ordered to do, say, “We are worthless slaves; we have done only what we ought to have done!” ’

For the Gospel of the Lord, praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

THE SERMON The Revd Canon Christopher Carolane, Acting Precentor

NICENE CREED Please stand

We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Please sit or kneel Led by Fran Henderson

Let us pray for the world and for the church.

After each petition Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

At the end of the prayers the presider concludes Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers. Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE NOTICES Please sit

THE GREETING OF PEACE Please stand

We are the body of Christ. His Spirit is with us.

The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

All may exchange a sign of peace.

THE OFFERTORY HYMN

During the hymn, an offering is received to support the Cathedral’s ministry. On average our congregants contribute $20 each. Please be as generous as you can. Thank you for your gift. Tap and Go facilities are available on the plates.

2

The God of Abraham praise, at whose supreme command from earth we rise and seek the joys at his right hand; we all on earth forsake, its wisdom, fame, and power; and him our only portion make, our shield and tower.

4

Before the Saviour’s face the ransomed nations bow, o’erwhelmed at his almighty grace, for ever new; he shows his prints of love – they kindle to a flame, and sound through all the worlds above the slaughtered Lamb.

3

The God who reigns on high the great archangels sing, and ‘Holy, Holy, Holy!’ cry, ‘almighty King, who was, and is the same, and evermore shall be: the Lord, our Father, great I AM we worship Thee.’

5

The whole triumphant host give thanks to God on high; ‘Hail, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,’ they ever cry. Hail, Abraham’s God, and mine, (I join the heavenly lays,) all might and majesty are thine, and endless praise.

Thomas Olivers (1725-99) Hymns Ancient and Modern New Standard 331

FIRE DRILL We will be conducting an evacuation fire drill for the Cathedral at the end of the 10.30am service next Sunday, 13 October. This is nothing to be alarmed about, but is needed to ensure we have the best procedures in place in the unlikely event that an evacuation might be necessary at some time in the future. We will evacuate the building to the car park, and then move to the Barbara Darling Room to share in morning tea as per usual.

PLEDGES TO SUPPORT THE CANON MISSIONER It is now 6 months since we welcomed our new Canon Missioner, the Revd Canon Robert Vun, to minister here at the Cathedral. This appointment was possible through your generous pledges towards funding this new role. We are very grateful for the extraordinary response of the congregation! If you are yet to fulfil your pledge of support, would you please be so kind as to do so? You can place your donation in an envelope in the offertory plate with a note detailing how much you have pledged, or donate via direct debit, using these details: Account Name: St. Paul’s Cathedral, Bank: Anglican Development Fund. BSB: 703-122. Account Number: 05009216. It would be important to insert Reference: ‘Canon Missioner’. Many thanks! WELCOMERS NEEDED If you are available to assist with the welcome of the congregation at the Synod Eucharist on Wednesday 16 October at 7pm, please let Andrew know [email protected] or 9653 4210. If anyone is interested in helping as a welcomer at regular Cathedral services, particularly on Sunday nights, please also contact Andrew.

PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS WORKSHOP Volunteers who are yet to attend a professional standards seminar are encouraged to sign up for the one in the David Penman Room on Friday 25 October (10am-3pm). If you don’t know whether you are required to attend a workshop or not, you can email [email protected] to check. Bookings can be made via this link: www.trybooking.com/BEEBM or by calling the Cathedral Office.

CONGREGATION LUNCH (FUND RAISING FOR CAMBODIA PROJECT) A congregation lunch will be held in the Barbara Darling Room on Sunday 20 October following the 10.30am service. There will be silent auctions and other opportunities to help raise funds to support the work of the Cathedral’s Cambodia Project in January 2020. All are very welcome. There is no need to book ahead. Cost of lunch: $12.

SERVE MORNING TEA Our morning tea rosters are equal opportunity rosters. We need a few extra helpers to serve the tea and coffee and provide food. If you are able to assist with serving morning tea for the 10.30am Sunday service, please get in touch with Andrew Victorsen: [email protected] or 9653 4210.

NEXT SENIORS MEETING The next Cathedral Seniors meeting will be held at 2.00pm on Friday, October 25 in the Barbara Darling Room. Everyone is welcome to attend irrespective of age. Feel free to bring along a friend.
