Twenty years of annual shenanigans on the Bard stage means thatChor Leoni has amassed a plethora of site-specific material for ourSummer Solstice shows. Triumphal March from Aida? Done it. Age ofAquarius? Check. Mafioso music? Yes. Often it has meant thatselections appear in only one concert before being filed away in thelibrary – till now! Chor Leoni has opened the vaults and put together ashowcase guaranteed to amaze and delight you in a show full ofmemories, laughter, costumes, fun, and choreography! Laugh alongwith us as we present Best of Bard. We know you’ll go home smiling!

Martha Lou Henley ~ Honorary Life Member On the occasion of Chor Leoni’s 20th anniversary, the choir is proud to recognize Martha Lou Henley (“Louie”) as an Honorary Life Member. A wonderful friend of Chor Leoni from the very beginning, Louie is the first individual to receive this award. In addition to providing meaningful annual financial support, her many acts of kindness include bringing cookies and cakes to rehearsals, working tirelessly to compile the Chor Leoni Archives and documenting our annual Bard show dress rehearsals with great photographs. When Louie first became a Chor Leoni supporter and realized the extent of Diane’s preparation for the choir’s weekly Wednesday night rehearsals, a fully prepared dinner would magically appear on the Loomers’ doorstep every Wednesday. We honour this kind and generous woman for the extraordinary contribution she has made to Chor Leoni Men’s Choir. Thank you, Louie, from the bottom of our hearts!

Welcome to Chor Leoni and Friends, our twentieth anniversary celebration for Vancouver’s magnificent singing lions. Tonight is a time where we can look back on the choir’s tremendous achievements and sing for you some of the choir’s most loved music. We are so grateful to be surrounded by Chor Leoni’s good friends – Shelagh Rogers, Robert Sund, Mariateresa Magisano, Brett Polegato, our amazing string players and, most importantly, you – our loving and supportive audience.

As we celebrate the accomplishments of Chor Leoni we are, in the same breath, celebrating the dedication, passion, vision, and artistry of Diane Loomer. This night was to be her victory lap – a chance for her to take Chor Leoni out for one last spin conducting her favourite music with her favourite men, surrounded by her favourite friends. It pains us all that she did not get the chance to bask, just one more time, in the glow of this choir and the love that you, our Vancouver audience, have freely given to Chor Leoni for twenty years.

No, tonight will not be Diane’s victory lap, but nor will it be a mourning for her loss. Rather, it is our hope that tonight will be a celebration and culmination of everything she believed in, achieved, and loved. Though she is physically not with us tonight, Diane’s spirit and her legacy will live on in the reverberations of the graceful, powerful, and loving singing of the men of Chor Leoni. It will also live on in the future work of this amazing choir. Tonight we look back so that we may see, with fullest clarity, our way forward.

I am truly ecstatic to be the new Artistic Director of Chor Leoni. I cannot wait to share a lifetime’s worth of musical moments with you. Thank you for being one of Chor Leoni’s good old friends.I personally look forward to being one of your new friends very soon!

Word, equal to the Almighty, our only hope,Eternal light of the earth and the Heavens; We break the peaceful night’s silence,Divine Saviour, cast your eyes upon us!

Spread the fire of your mighty grace upon usMay the entire hell flee at the sound of your voice;Disperse from any slothful soul the drowsinessWhich induces it to forget your laws!

Oh Christ, look with favour upon this faithful peopleWhich has now gathered to bless you.Receive its singing, offered to your immortal glory,And may it leave with the gifts you have bestowed upon it!

The soul of man is like the water: it comes from heaven, it returns to heaven, and down again to earth must go, ever changing.

When from the high, sheer wall of rock the pure stream gushes, it sprays its lovely vapour in billowing clouds towards the smooth rock, and lightly received, it goes enshrouded, softly hissing down to the deep.

Cliffs tower, opposing its fall. Annoyed, it foams step by step into the abyss.

Page 6: Chor Leoni & Friends concert program (March 23, 2013)

Wintermusic: Robert Sundtext: Bjarni Thorarensen, trans. Vilhjalmur Stefansson

Who rides with such fury A fiery charger – Through the high heavens A horse snow-coloured? The mighty steed From his mane tosses Frozen flakes That flutter earthward.

Glowing glitters His gray armour; On his shoulder there hangs A shield ice-covered; On his head he wears The helm of terror – The fearful Aegis’ Frosty helmet.

He comes from the hoary Haunts of Midnight Where the world-force flows From the well eternal;Where restless seas Roar in breakers On shores without Spring And Summer-less rocks.

He knows not of age Though the oldest gods Were his playmates ere The earth was fashioned; The last world will die And desolation Veil the suns Ere his way is ended.

In a flat bed it slinks down the grassy vale, and in the waveless lake all the stars feast on their likeness.

Wind is the wave’s handsome suitor; wind stirs up from the depths foaming billows.

Soul of man, how like to the water! Fate of man, how like to the wind!

The strong are strengthened When his step approaches; The soft Earth grows firm In his fierce embraces, The tears she wept Are turned to diamonds And her mourning garb To a mantle of ermine. ’Tis not truly said That when Summer approaches Winter flees To the frozen Northland: He broods in the heavens While humble Spring Leads Summer in Through sunlit meadows.

’Tis in his hands The earth turns daily, In his powerful grasp The poles are twirling; And he leaves, E’en a little moment, Naught of earth That’s near to heaven.

’Tis therefore we see While Summer lingers The mountains still wear The Winter’s livery; ’Tis therefore we see That Summer melts not Heaven’s hoar-frost From the Head of Age.

5 Ways to Kill a Manmusic: Bob Chilcotttext: Edwin Brock

There are many cumbersome ways to kill a man.You can make him carry a plank of woodto the top of a hill and nail him to it.To do this properly you require a crowd of peoplewearing sandals, a cock that crows, a cloakto dissect, a sponge, some vinegar and oneman to hammer the nails home.

Or you can take a length of steel, shaped and chased in a traditional way,and attempt to pierce the metal cage he wears. But for this you need white horses,English trees, men with bows and arrows,at least two flags, a prince, and acastle to hold your banquet in.

Dispensing with nobility, you may, if the windallows, blow gas at him. But then you needa mile of mud sliced through with ditches, not to mention black boots, bomb craters, more mud, a plague of rats, a dozen songsand some round hats made of steel.

In an age of aeroplanes, you may flymiles above your victim and dispose of him bypressing one small switch. All you thenrequire is an ocean to separate you, twosystems of government, a nation’s scientists, several factories, a psychopath, andland that no-one needs for several years.

These are, as I began, cumbersome ways to kill a man.Simpler, direct, and much more neat is to seethat he is living somewhere in the middleof the twentieth century, and leave him there.

Varjele, Jumala, Soastamusic: Veljo Tormis; text: Kanteletar II: 323, 326

Varjele, vakainen Luoja,kaitse, kaunoinen Jumala

kavioista vainovarsain,sorkista sotahevosten,rauan valkian varasta,terän tuiman tutkaimesta,tykin suuren suun e’estä,rautakirnujen kiasta,suurilta sotakeoilta, uron tappotanterilta,varjele vahingon teiltä,kaitse kaikista pahoista!

Protect us, steadfast Creator, protect, beautiful God.

From the hooves of enemy foals, from the cloven hooves of war horses, from the fire of the iron, from the harsh point of the blade, from the front of the large mouth of the cannon, from the mouth of churning iron, from the large war fields, from the killing fields of the hero, protect us from the roads of harm, protect us from all evils!

Last Letter Home music: Lee Hoibytext: Jesse Givens

I searched all my life for a dream and I found it in you. I would like to think I made a positive difference in your lives. I will never be able to make up for the bad. I am so sorry. The happiest moments in my life all deal with my little family. I will always have with me the small moments we all shared. The moments when you quit taking life so serious and smiled. The sounds of a beautiful boy’s laughter or the simple nudge of a baby unborn. You will never know how complete you have made me. You opened my eyes to a world I never dreamed existed.

Dakota, you are more son than I could ever ask for. You have a big beautiful heart. I will always be there in our park when you dream, so we can still play. I hope some day you will have a son like mine. I love you Toad. I will always be there with you. I’ll be in the sun, shadows, dreams, and joys of your life.

Bean, I never got to see you but I know in my heart you are beautiful.

I have never been so blessed as I was on the day I met Melissa Dawn Benfield. You are my Angel, soulmate, wife, lover, and best friend. I am so sorry. I did not want to have to write this letter. There is so much more I need to say. So much more I need to share. A lifetime’s worth. I married you for a million lifetimes. That’s how long I will be with you. Please find it in your heart to forgive me for leaving you alone.

Do me one favor, after you tuck the children in, give them hugs and kisses from me. Go outside and look at the stars, and count them. Don’t forget to smile.

Ständchen, D.920 (Serenade)music: Franz Schuberttext: Franz Grillparzer

Hesitantly quiet in the dark of the night’s stillness,we are here, and, our fingers softly bent, gently, gently we knock at the beloved’s chamber door.

And now growing, swelling, swelling, with one combined voice, loudly we call with confidence;don’t sleep when the voice of love speaks!

Page 9: Chor Leoni & Friends concert program (March 23, 2013)

A wise man once looked near and far with a lantern for true human beings;how much more rare than gold are those people whom we like and find lovely? So, when friendship and love speaks, my friend - my love - don’t sleep!

But what if all the riches could be as valuable as sleep? So instead of words and instead of gifts you should now also have rest.Just one more greeting, one more word; then our merry song for you falls silent.Quietly, quietly, we steal away, yes we steal away again!

from Songs of the Seamusic: Charles Villiers Stanford; text: Henry John Newbolt

Devon, O Devon, in wind and rain

Drake, in the North Sea grimly prowling,Treading his dear Revenge’s deck,Watch’d, with the sea-dogs round him growling,Galleons drifting wreck by wreck.“Fetter and Faith for England’s neck,Faggot and Father, Saint and chain,Yonder the Devil and all go howling,Devon, O Devon, in wind and rain!”

Drake at the last, off Nombre lying,Knowing the night that toward him crept,Gave to the sea-dogs round him cryingThis for a sign before he slept:“Pride of the West! What Devon hath keptDevon shall keep on tide or main;Call to the storm and drive them flying,Devon, O Devon, in wind and rain!”

Valour of England gaunt and whitening,Far in a Southland brought to bay,Locked in a death-grip all day tight’ning,Waited the end in twilight gray.Battle and storm and the sea-dog’s way!Drake from his long rest turn’d again,Vict’ry lit thy steel with lightning,Devon, O Devon, in wind and rain!

Homeward Bound

After long lab’ring in the windy ways,On smooth and shining tidesSwiftly the great ship glides,Her storms forgot, her weary watches past;Northward she glides and thro’ th’ enchanted hazeFaint on the verge her far hope dawns at last.

The phantom skyline of a shadowy down,Whose pale white cliffs below,Thro’ sunny mist a-glow,Like noonday ghosts of summer moonshine gleam – Soft as old sorrow, bright as old renown,There lies the home of all our mortal dream.

The Old Superb

The wind was rising easterly, the morning sky was blue,The Straits before us open’d wide and free;We look’d towards the Admiral, where high the Peter flew,And all our hearts were dancing like the sea.The French are gone to Martinique with four-and-twenty sail,The Old Superb is old and foul and slow; But the French are gone to Martinique, and Nelson’s on the trail,And where he goes the Old Superb must go.

So Westward Ho! for Trinidad, and Eastward Ho! for Spain,And “Ship Ahoy!” a hundred times a day;Round the world, if need be, and round the world againWith a lame duck lagging, lagging all the way.

The Old Superb was barnacled and green as grass below,Her sticks were only fit for stirring grog; The pride of all her midshipmen was silent long ago,And long ago they ceased to heave the log,Four year out from home she was, and ne’er a week in port,And nothing save the guns aboard her bright; But Captain Keats he knew the game, and swore to share the sport,For he never yet came in too late to fight.

“Now up, my lads,” the Captain cried, “for sure the case were hardIf longest out were first to fall behind;Aloft, aloft with studding sails, and lash them on the yard,For night and day the trades are driving blind.”So all day long and all day long behind the fleet we crept,And how we fretted none but Nelson guessed; But ev’ry night the Old Superb she sailed when others slept,‘Til we ran the French to earth with all the rest.

On the way home from the bakery,(A toast to love and let’s go dance)On my way I met,His son Ti-Louis, his happy rolly-polly,Marie my longtime rotund love,A toast to love, to longtime lovers, Let’s go dancing, longtime love.

Three well-heeled gentlemen,Two on horses and the other on foot. The one on foot asked meWhere we were going to sleep tonight.“At the house we usually do,”You lied to the honest gentleman. We will sleep in the chicken houseWhere the cocks and hens will …. on your head.

Now celebrating its twentieth anniversary, Vancouver’s Chor Leoni Men’s Choir was founded in 1992 by Artistic Director Diane Loomer, C.M. The choir is regarded as a leader in the Canadian male choir movement, and acts as mentor and inspiration to choirs worldwide.

Whether it is a somber moment of reflection during a Remembrance Day performance or a joyful turn of comedic phrasing at a Summer Solstice show, Chor Leoni is renowned for reaching across the footlights and transforming the performance from ‘concert’ to ‘conversation.’ The “singing lions” live up to their name as they fearlessly move between musical genres, always aiming to communicate, engage, and entertain. Engendering tears of emotion, peals of laughter, and gasps of awe from their audiences, Chor Leoni prides itself on its ability to perform in many languages and styles, always sung with fresh energy and poise.

Chor Leoni is committed to fostering young composers, young male singers, and conductors. PROMYS (PROgram for Mentoring Young Singers) invites talented singers from surrounding high schools to join with Chor Leoni in rehearsals and performances of their annual Remembrance Day concerts. MYVoice (Mobilizing Young men’s Voices) is a program that provides an opportunity for teenage boys across Metro Vancouver to come together in two all-male choirs to learn music, find their changed voices, develop their confidence, and nurture their interest and commitment to music and culture.

Chor Leoni has won many awards at the national and international level and represented Canada in the European Broadcasting Union’s Let the Peoples Sing international choral competition. In July 2012 the choir won a dozen awards at the 51st Concorso Internazionale di Canto Corale “Seghizzi” (Italy), including two Audience Favourite awards, a special prize for the Most Interesting Artistic Program, and 2nd place Grand Prix overall.

The choir has an extensive discography. Its Yuletide Fires CD was voted the Outstanding Choral Recording of 2004 by the Association of Canadian Choral Conductors, and won a Western Canadian Music Award as the 2004 Outstanding Classical Recording. Circle of Compassion, featuring repertoire from recent Remembrance Day performances, was the recipient of the 2008National Choral Award for Outstanding Choral Recording given by the Association of Canadian Choral Conductors (ACCC), and its Healing Voices recording project, featuring music that focuses on healing and calming, also received the 2008 Outstanding Sponsorship Award from the ACCC.

Ken Cormier is a pianist equally at home in the classical, pop, and jazz genres. Upon completion of his classical studies at the UBC School of Music, his professional career began with three seasons as repetiteur with Vancouver Opera. He then moved into the world of professional music theatre, first with the Livent Company, and more recently with Vancouver’s Arts Club, in whose productions he continues to work regularly as keyboardist, arranger, and musical director. Ken has been with Chor Leoni since 1998. He makes his home in Burnaby with his wife Lisa and their two wonderful children.
