Abstract Draft:
This study investigates the geographic and socio-economic trends accounting for the growth of IB schools in India. The majority of IB schools are clustered in
certain states of the country. The study investigates the reasons for the popularity of the IB in certain states, such as Maharashtra, and highlights the issues that
educational institutions confront when planning and implementing IB programmes in India. The reasons for the popularity of the Diploma Programme and the
growing popularity of the Primary Years Programme are examined. There is a special focus on the challenges faced by schools wanting to implement the
Middle Years Programme. Qualitative data is presented regarding reasons for the implementation, or non-implementation, of the MYP. The anticipation of the Next Chapter of the MYP is examined and its likely impact within India is described for schools, educators, and parents. Lastly, the 2009 Right to Education Act (RTE) is
examined, considering its impact on international education in India.

Recognition of MYP
Case Study: Inclusive Education
Inclusive Education is not only the right thing to do . . . . . . in India, it's the law
● RTE
● Learning differences: the tip of the iceberg??
● Parents flying their children to London or San Francisco for testing and counseling
One Principal's comment:"We had to limit the special education students in our school to 10% – otherwise the school would have filled up with children with learning differences – we've got a waiting list of 40 families."

Better Alignment: example
IBDP: Mathematics Exploration is personal
MYP students are better prepared
Changes in Diploma to be aligned with MYP & PYP
For the Exploration IA, students choose a personal example from the world of Mathematics, be it fractals, or mathematical modeling of microorganisms, etc.

MYP is an excellent choice for Edubridge International SchoolSchools need to decide: either IB or Cambridge – go with one systemRecognition of MYP will hurt IGCSE in IndiaProspect for growth of IB is good -- particularly in good areas
Founder Director of Mahindra UWC and consultant to many international schools in India
Which will better prepare students for the IB Diploma . . . . . . . . MYP or IGCSE?? We think: MYP, if the teachers are good!
One critical question:
Please introduce yourself to the person on the right and/or the person on your left.In groups of 2 or 3, ask each other:
What is ONE IMPORTANT LEARNING I will take from this session? OR:Ask ONE BURNING QUESTION I have about this topic.
Short break: Learning or Question

Is the MYP a better preparatory course than the IGCSE?
Dissertation papers written by Dr. Tristian Stobie (2005) and Iain Sachdev (2011)
IBO's press release in Feb 2013: "MYP students in the UK have more civic mindedness and cultural awareness"
including the issues around choosing the MYP or the IGCSE
"The MYP is the most challenging of the the IBO's programmes" ~ ____
Focus on MYP:
Eight subjects, or six, or seven?
● Sent survey to all IB schools in India
● 35 responses
● Interviewed MYP Coordinators and HODs at 4 MYP authorized schools in India

Qualitative Data from Interviews of MYP Pedagogical Leaders
Summary of common challenges:
● Teacher training (PD workshops within India) for MYP
● Not enough proximity / communication between other schools
● Language policy (Indians are polyglots)
● Initial Costs and lot of paperwork for AuthorizationSpecial thanks to everyone at Victorious Kidss Educarez (Pune), RBK International Academy (Mumbai), Kodaikannal International School (Kodaikannal) and Stonehill International School (Bangalore)

Why do most International Schools in India go from PYP to IGCSE to IBDP?
MYP is not clearly understoodMYP has only been recognized recentlyMYP requires good teachers and good teacher trainingMYP requires writing the curriculumMYP is more expensive than IGCSE
"You're wrong!"one reason only
"if it costs £20 000 to implement the IGCSE, then it costs £80 000 to implement the MYP"

Understanding the MYP
Many administrators, teachers, parents, etc. do not understand theory behind MYP.Solution: study groups to read and discuss important texts like Understanding by Design by McTighe & Wiggins, or Stirring the Heart, Mind and Soul by H. Lynn Ericson

Understanding the MYP
● Big Ideas -- Concepts● Explicitly teach 21st Century Skills● Transfer: Skills across subjects● Assessment: Formative, Varied,
Positive, and Authentic● Reflective: Learning how to learn
Chapter 7: An Implementation Framework to Support 21st Century Skills by Jay McTighe and Elliott Seif
Assessment
Learning theory:
● Formative
● Varied
● Positive
● Authentic
Parents say:
● Fair
● Consistent○ across subjects○ across teachers
● Understandable

MYP Curriculum
"A comprehensive, coherent, written
curriculum, based on the requirements of the
programme and developed by the school, is available
to all sections of the school community."
Writing the Curriculum is Difficult
Solutions:1. Teacher retention2. More collaborative time3. Curriculum Writing Workshop
● discuss big questions, like: what is a school?
● write curriculum
● write policies
Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats for the IB in India can be
summed up in one word:
Teachers
● Teacher Training● Teacher Salaries● Teacher Retention● Teacher Autonomy● Teachers who understand student-
centered education● Quality of Life for Teachers

Magnet Analogy
Progressive, NewCurriculum:
● project based● less tests, less
structure, less constraints
● self-motivated learners
● engaged students seeking experts
Traditional Syllabus:
● compartments, boxes, ● students asking "what will
come on the test?"● massive homework
assignments● students worried about
grades● teachers giving instructions
about how to get good grades

Teacher SalariesPossibly the most explosive issue for IB schools in IndiaApplicants whose salary is 10,000 INR per month ($180)Problem for access and advancementDifficult to get experienced overseas staff
● “separate pay scales”??? ● “overseas allowance”???● Higher fees???

Teacher Salaries: solutionsLong term solution: better pay for Indian teachersGradually work towards better pay for Indian teachersNo distinction or little distinction between Indian and overseas teachersSo many gray areasMahindra UWC formula:
● good salaries (by Indian standards) for all
● mostly Indian teachers
● some overseas teachers who love India
Beautiful campus and brilliant academics: Mahindra UWC attracts overseas teachers.
