Signal

24bit ADC technology has much wider scope for acquiring signal than 16 bit ADC technology, especially when the signal drifts. 24 bit can easily cover all the ranges of signal drifting which correspond to different clinical scenarios.

24bit ADC can restore the finest SpO2 waveform by far superior resolution, for clinician to observe every minor physiology signal change, the high speed processing rate can also enhance the motion tolerance capability therefore guaranteeing measurement consistency.

Unique 24bit ADC (analog-to—digital converter) technology and AC/DC (alternate current/direct current) design combines technological excellence and engineering beauty, enhancing the overall response time of the whole electric circuit. The computation speed has been improved by 64 times, fundamentally guaranteeing the capability of capturing pulse saturation in all kind of clinical settings.

Combination of Pulse and Spectrum Analysis – Actual Clinical Information

Mindray researchers think that pulse is the most important physiology signal in SpO2 measurement, a correct measurement of pulse wave signal will ensure the accuracy of SpO2 value therefore patient safety. Through continuous study and optimization, Mindray SpO2 algorithm finds the perfect balance between the time domain and the frequency domain computation, tracking close to the actual physiological pulse and therefore obtaining accurate SpO2 measurement result.

PI & S-Sat technology – Quality behind Data

Besides SpO2 measurement, Mindray PI and S-Sat provide SpO2 measurement quality information which gives more confidence to clinicians.

PI (perfusion index) represents the perfusion status of the body site being measured, its number positively correlates with the perfusion level.

S-SAT reflects the signal quality and reliability, when the signal quality is low, a ‘?’ will be displayed beside the SpO2 value, reminding that the measurement might not be of optimized quality.

Clinical Implications:

When patient is at very low perfusion (PI<0.3), PI value will have a different shade of color, therefore notifying the clinicians. Meanwhile S-SAT function will act as a reminder that the signal quality is not fulfilling the measurement requirement. Clinicians should use other method to monitor the patient oxygenation status.

PI<0.3 can happen in situations below:

shock, sepsis, severe blood loss, severe heart failure;

low birth weight or preterm neonates;

low room temperature;

peripheral vascular disease;

tightening of tourniquet or NIBP cuff, etc.

Motion Tolerance In some hospital settings, such as the NICU, patient movement can adversely impact accurate SpO2 measurement. Motion noise interference may be especially acute where the patient is under stress arising from illness or treatment. Hypoxic episodes often are accompanied by stress, increasing the importance of accurate SpO2 measurement. Mindray SpO2 technology addresses these clinical challenges using its spectral analysis technique, proven effective by consistent and superior performance with thousands of satisfied patients and clinicians.

Comparison of the Mindray SpO2 performance to three competing SpO2 technologies shows comparable or superior performance. All SpO2 sensors were connected to the same simulator with the same SpO2 value. An irregular movement simulation was conducted. During the simulation, measurement results were automatically recorded. The results showed that Mindray SpO2 measurements consistently out-performed two leading competitors and provided comparable performance to the third.

Accuracy

In a study comparing the accuracy in desaturation of various SpO2 technologies, Mindray’s technology was found to have superior accuracy and consistency. Accuracy was determined by using an industry standard breathe-down protocol and comparing the results to the gold standard blood gas test of arterial blood.

Fast Response Times

In daily clinical settings, every seconds count. The ability to obtain an accountable SpO2 reading in the shortest possible time will save the operators time and improve the overall clinical confidence. Mindray SpO2 technology provides fastest response time in the industry.

Methodology:

SpO2 measurements were taken from Mindray (9008V2.0+512F sensor), Nellcor (DS100+Nell-1 sensor), Masimo (MS-2013+LNCS DC-I sensor) and Philips (using M1191T sensor) in three different measuring settings designed to simulate typical clinical situations. Results shown are the total time required to display an accurate SpO2 value.

Method1: Connect sensor to cable, when sensor is detected by machine, connect sensor to finger immediately.

Method2: Connect sensor to cable, when sensor is detected by machine, connect sensor to finger for 5 seconds, then change to another finger.

Method3: Connect finger first to sensor, then connect sensor to cable.

Tolerance of Light Interference

The quality of input signal is essential to ensure the final measurement quality. Sensor design is one of the most important factor in determining the input signal quality. Mindray SpO2 sensors are designed to be obtain excellent signal during strong light interference, which has been demonstrated repeatedly in all clinical settings. Methodology: We connect different SpO2 sensor to fingers of normal healthy adult. The SpO2 sensors we used in this test were Mindray 9008V2.0+512F, Nellcor DS100+Nell-1, MS-2013+LNCS DC-I, Philips + M1191T. In order to simulate different clinical settings, we used 60W incandescent lamp lighting at different positions and perfusion index between 0.3-0.6. In each of those positions we observed the performance of different SpO2 technology.

Measuring in Low Perfusion Settings

Low perfusion is common in many settings, such as shock, sepsis, severe blood loss, severe heart failure, low birth weight or preterm neonates, low room temperature, peripheral vascular disease, tightening of tourniquet or NIBP cuff, etc. A robust SpO2 technology should demonstrate consistent performance in the most extreme clinical settings. Mindray SpO2 technology’s low perfusion performance has been proven by millions of measurements during the past 20 years.

Methodology:

Low perfusion is simulated at the finger tip by having a healthy adult lift the right hand for 2-5 minutes while standing still, wearing different SpO2 sensors on each finger.

The SpO2 module and sensors used in this test were Mindray 9008V2.0+512F, Nellcor DS100+Nell-1, MS-2013+LNCS DC-I, Philips + M1191T.
