Significance of the Study This section usually requires the researcher

to describe the implication of one’s research to several audiences to assert its importance,

and potential benefits they can gain from reading and using the study (Creswell, 2014,

p.119).

Page 7: Choosing and Introducing a Research Topic · Choosing and Introducing a Research Topic ... the research topic and the need to investigate it. Here, the perspective you take on is,

Did you know? Significance of the study is a bit different from the

background of the study wherein you also lay down the research topic and the need to investigate it.

Here, the perspective you take on is, after having done the research, what sort of impacts can the findings of your study

bring?

Elements of the Significance of the Study Section

There are several questions that you may reflect on in writing the significance of your study. These

include the following:

Page 9: Choosing and Introducing a Research Topic · Choosing and Introducing a Research Topic ... the research topic and the need to investigate it. Here, the perspective you take on is,

Element Number 1:

“Who may possibly profit from your

research?”

Page 10: Choosing and Introducing a Research Topic · Choosing and Introducing a Research Topic ... the research topic and the need to investigate it. Here, the perspective you take on is,

Element Number 2:“What information can you bring which will be

crucial for them?”

Page 11: Choosing and Introducing a Research Topic · Choosing and Introducing a Research Topic ... the research topic and the need to investigate it. Here, the perspective you take on is,

Element Number 3: “What knowledge they

might be interested in that they could get from your

research?”

Page 12: Choosing and Introducing a Research Topic · Choosing and Introducing a Research Topic ... the research topic and the need to investigate it. Here, the perspective you take on is,

Element Number 4:“What possible impact can your

research have on the existing body of knowledge about the

topic?”

“Will your research have impact on

practice?”

Page 16: Choosing and Introducing a Research Topic · Choosing and Introducing a Research Topic ... the research topic and the need to investigate it. Here, the perspective you take on is,

Take Note: In writing the significance of your study, it is recommended for you to

think of the audience for your research and clearly state how they will benefit

or make use of your research.

Page 17: Choosing and Introducing a Research Topic · Choosing and Introducing a Research Topic ... the research topic and the need to investigate it. Here, the perspective you take on is,

For Example:Let’s look at an example of significance

of the study portion from Clamor(2012) on leadership development

through informal education of Filipino immigrant community leaders:

Page 18: Choosing and Introducing a Research Topic · Choosing and Introducing a Research Topic ... the research topic and the need to investigate it. Here, the perspective you take on is,

For Example: This study of leadership development through informal

education of Filipino immigrant community leaders willbenefit several groups. First of all, the findings of thisresearch may benefit those involved in communityorganizations as the study presents another form ofeducation involved in the development of leadershipcompetencies.

Page 19: Choosing and Introducing a Research Topic · Choosing and Introducing a Research Topic ... the research topic and the need to investigate it. Here, the perspective you take on is,

For Example: As there is a dearth of informal education

researches, the inquiry may provide them withinsights in utilizing this mode of education in theirorganizations to help people gain knowledge andskills relevant to their activities and contexts.

Page 20: Choosing and Introducing a Research Topic · Choosing and Introducing a Research Topic ... the research topic and the need to investigate it. Here, the perspective you take on is,

For Example: In addition, this research also documented how

Filipino immigrant leaders have embeddedthemselves in their new environment and haverisen to face the challenges of adaptation to a newculture. On the other hand, others take on activeleadership to fight for their rights to stay in theirhost countries.

Something to think about…From the given example of

significance of the study, what two groups did the author identified

that may benefit from the research? And how?

Page 22: Choosing and Introducing a Research Topic · Choosing and Introducing a Research Topic ... the research topic and the need to investigate it. Here, the perspective you take on is,

Beneficiaries of the Study:(1) Community organizations as it will

provide them insights on how they may develop their leaders; and

(2) Government agencies that are tasked to prepare Filipinos for life abroad.

Instruction:•Now, let’s look at your own study. Reflect on

possible contributions your research might have to the following areas:

(1)Wealth of knowledge about your topic;(2)Practice; and

(3)Policy and decision-making processes.

Take Note:

There is a need to clarify the parameters of your research in

order to make your research more feasible.

Page 28: Choosing and Introducing a Research Topic · Choosing and Introducing a Research Topic ... the research topic and the need to investigate it. Here, the perspective you take on is,

Did you know? Your research will most likely be bound by resources such

as time, finances and number of researchers doing the study, among others. These would definitely have an impact in the way you conduct the study. It would be better to note these limitations and how they have affected your study in

its design, data collection and analysis procedures. Declaring these also manages the expectations of your

readers on your research.

Aspects for Scope and Delimitations In writing this section, you may describe the parameters of

your research h. These pertain to the following:

(1) Topical focus of the study

(2) Research Participants

(3) Research Site

(4) Time Frame of the Research

(5) Methodological Limitations

Page 30: Choosing and Introducing a Research Topic · Choosing and Introducing a Research Topic ... the research topic and the need to investigate it. Here, the perspective you take on is,

Research Participants

Take note: Research population traits—sex, race, socio-economic

status, profession, etc.

Sample size of your research

Page 31: Choosing and Introducing a Research Topic · Choosing and Introducing a Research Topic ... the research topic and the need to investigate it. Here, the perspective you take on is,

Take Note: Draft this section at the onset of your study to

guide you in planning your research. However, after conducting your research, go back to this

section and review it. Determine which portions are still relevant. You may also consider revising it

to include unforeseen limitations which you encountered in the course of your study.

Page 32: Choosing and Introducing a Research Topic · Choosing and Introducing a Research Topic ... the research topic and the need to investigate it. Here, the perspective you take on is,

Helpful Key Phrases Aside from the mentioned aspects, you may use key phrases

in writing the scope and delimitation of your study such as:

(a) “The coverage of this study…”

(b) “The researcher limited this study to…”

(c) “The study covers the…”

(d) “The study does not cover the…”

(e) “This study is focus on…”

(f) “This study is limited to…”

Page 33: Choosing and Introducing a Research Topic · Choosing and Introducing a Research Topic ... the research topic and the need to investigate it. Here, the perspective you take on is,

For Example:

Let’s go back to our previous example about Clamor (2012) study. The

following is an example of an excerpt showing the scope and delimitation of a

study from Clamor (2012, p.8):

Page 34: Choosing and Introducing a Research Topic · Choosing and Introducing a Research Topic ... the research topic and the need to investigate it. Here, the perspective you take on is,

Scope and Delimitation of the Study This research focused on describing

constructs of: (1) leadership development;(2) informal education; and (3) communityorganizations.

Page 35: Choosing and Introducing a Research Topic · Choosing and Introducing a Research Topic ... the research topic and the need to investigate it. Here, the perspective you take on is,

Scope and Delimitation of the Study The study limited its number of research

participants to six community leaders fromtwo community organizations in LosAngeles, California.

Page 36: Choosing and Introducing a Research Topic · Choosing and Introducing a Research Topic ... the research topic and the need to investigate it. Here, the perspective you take on is,

Scope and Delimitation of the Study In this regard, the findings of the study are only valid in this

specific setting and cannot be assigned to other sites withdifferent research participants. Process transferability wasconsidered instead and to facilitate this, a detaileddescription of the instrument, data gathering procedureand analysis in the methodology section of the research isgiven.

Page 37: Choosing and Introducing a Research Topic · Choosing and Introducing a Research Topic ... the research topic and the need to investigate it. Here, the perspective you take on is,

Scope and Delimitation of the Study The study covered a certain period of time in the

life history of research participants, thus, the studyare only valid for that period of time as subjectswill eventually gain more experience and learningopportunities from being community leaders thatcan change, reinforce, and add more leadershipcompetencies to their repertoire.
