Peta’s story
Thomas and Krystal’s story
Alanna’s story
“Everyone told us how country service would be the best time of our lives. As a beginning teacher, it was a huge decision for my husband and I to transfer our three children — however we were welcomed into the school and general community with open arms.”
“Take the chance to speak with locals and immerse yourself in the community and all it has to offer. You may only have one chance to visit or see something unique and if you continue to say no and never put yourself out there, you may miss out.”
“By teaching in a rural school I feel inspired, motivated and valued on a daily basis. I believe it has made me a better teacher by being afforded opportunities and experiences that are not necessarily available in urban schools.”
Where will your adventure take you?
Here are just some of the benefits
Permanency• Permanency may be offered to suitability qualified
teachers upon appointment to rural or remote locations.
Accommodation• Subsidised housing is available in many of our rural and
remote locations across Queensland and can represent significant savings. For example, in our TR7 schools the maximum amount of rent for teacher accommodation is $60 per fortnight. Access to housing is dependent on location and subject to availability.
• Transfer and appointment expenses are covered for teachers permanently appointed to rural or remote locations.
Career advancement opportunities• Greater opportunities to take on additional
responsibilities and fast track your leadership career.
• Leadership acceleration – Rural and remote locations are a great place to position yourself as a school leader.
• Take the lead is an initiative that supports aspiring leaders in rural and remote locations.
Professional development opportunities• Remote Area Incentive Scheme (RAIS) induction
conference –
• Cultural awareness training supports understanding of Indigenous customs, language and relationships.
• Location induction helps you learn about your new environment and lifestyle.
• Beginning teacher induction and mentoring programs support graduates and teachers new to the department.
Other benefits• Additional leave provisions given as discretionary leave
entitlements (previously called RAIS emergent leave).
• Accelerated transfer points are accrued if you are a permanent teacher and teach in a rural or remote community. This will increase your chances to transfer to your next desired location.
TEACHING IN RURAL AND REMOTE QUEENSLAND
Additional benefits for teachers in Identified Indigenous communitiesIdentified Location Payments of $1,000 a year for up to five years are made to teachers appointed to schools in Identified Indigenous communities.
Compensation Benefit Flight Option is available for teachers working in specific schools located in communities where alcohol restrictions apply. Teachers may choose to receive the Compensation Benefit cash payment based on the school’s transfer rating (see page 4), or three return flights per year for teachers and their registered dependants, with two of the flights being to the community’s designated coastal provincial centre, and the third flight to Brisbane.
Disclaimers * The Compensation Benefit is an annual amount paid per semester. ** Teachers in a TR4 - TR6 school receive an annual payment in the fourth and fifth year while teachers in a TR 7 school receive annual payments in their third, fourth and fifth year in their remote community. *** Taking the family figures based on teacher, spouse, one child under 14 and one child over 14.
