Choir Act 1 Prologue The year is 1815. Napoleon has been defeated.France is ruled by a King again. Toulon : Home port of the French navy. Convicts sing in time with rhythmic pulls of the rope/oars. All Convicts : Uh-huh,Uh-huh,Uh-huh… Look down, look down. Don’t look ‘em in the eye. Look down, look down. You’re here until you die. Con 1: The sun is strong, it’s hot as hell below All: Look down, look down, there’s twenty years to go. Con 2: I’ve done no wrong- Oh God, please hear my prayer! All: Look down, look down. Does anybody care? (music) All: Look down, look down, they’ve all forgotten you. Con 1: When I get free you won’t see me here for good! All: Look down, look down. And the righteous hurry past - they don’t hear the little ones crying. One more day standing about - what is it for? At the end of the day! Foreman: At the end of the day you get nothing for nothing! Sitting flat on your back doesn’t buy any bread! Woman 1 : There are children back at home - Woman 2 : And the children have got to be fed. Woman3: And you’re lucky to be in a job and in a bed. Women: And we’re counting our blessings! At the end of the day we’re glad to be working for a master who cares for the lives of the poor He is kind. He is good. He’s the answer to anyone’s prayer - and he cared when nobody would. It’s no wonder they made him the mayor! Bless the man who leads the way - at the end of the day! Woman1: Have you seen how the foreman is fuming today with his terrible breath and his horrible ways? Woman 2: It’s because little Fantine won’t let ‘im have his way. Women/foreman: At the end of the day it’s another day over - with enough in your pocket to last for a week. Pay the landlord, pay the shop, keep on working as long as you’re able. Keep on working till you drop or it’s back to the crumbs off the table. Well, you’ve got to pay your way - At the end of the day! Woman1: And what have we here, little innocent sister?
