IN OUR AUGUST ISSUEwe reported that thekitchen continues to growin importance as the heartof the home. I see this inpractically every housewe show in the pages ofthis magazine—kitchensare big, functional andbrilliantly designed. Inshort, the kitchen is theplace to be.

Anyone who entertainsknows what I mean. Myhusband and I finallyended our house huntand recently moved into acharming brick Tudor inDenver’s Platt Park neigh-borhood. Built in 1938, ournew home’s kitchen istypical for its time—located at the back of thehouse and closed off from the living and dining room. And eventhough it has been remodeled, it’s small and there’s limited seating:four chairs around a breakfast table.

But after hosting several gatherings, I’ve observed that theseshortcomings don’t deter guests from lingering. Even when I saysomething silly, like, “Let’s move into the living room where it’s morecomfortable,” or try to serve food in the dining room, nobody moves.

I suspect the kitchens in this issue really draw a crowd. Spaciousand smart, they open to the rest of the home and take center stage. Not only have we rounded up some of the most beautiful kitchens inthe state (starting on page 82), but we’ve also scouted fun newgadgets, appliances and accessories (starting on page 15) withwhich to fill them.

If your kitchen isn’t the space you want it to be, we hope thisissue will inspire you to change that. I know it’s giving me the urge to redo mine. Or at least make space for a few more chairs.

Cheers,

PH

Throughout hiscareer, he’s enjoyed stints as a painter, sculp-tor, graphic artist, architectural designer, setdesigner, photographer and poet, and hiswork has appeared in galleries around theglobe—from Warsaw to Washington, D.C.,and Los Angeles to New York—starring inmore than 40 one-man shows in the UnitedStates and Europe. Have you always wanted to be an artist?

Yes and no. For a long time I wanted to be an architect. More specifically Iwanted to be an architect who designs zoos. When I was a boy, I saw the animals in small cages pacing back and forth and I wanted to design zoos inwhich animals would have some space, some freedom. When I was bored inschool, especially during math and science classes, I would always be drawingsomething and the teacher would have to shout at me.

You grew up during the Nazi occupation of Poland, in a mental hospital where

your father was director. How did that upbringing influence your art?

I witnessed so much human tragedy, especially during the winter of 1941-42.The Nazis stole everything of value from the hospital, and patients died fromstarvation and cold. I watched from my window as the undertaker tookthem away in a two-wheeled cart. But more than that, I witnessed—and

Paris on an art scholarship and was introduced to the painter Pablo Picasso, who extended an invitation to paint with him in the south of France. In 2007,Sotheby’s in Amsterdam paid him the extraordinary tribute of organizing aretrospective of his work. He’s nothing short of a creative renaissance man.

We sat down with the artist at Arté, his studio-gallery in Denver’s CherryCreek North shopping district, to discover that the charming raconteur offersno short answers, touching on history and philosophy as well as art.

Colorado Homes & Lifestyles: How has your Polish heritage shaped your art?

Witold-K: I’ve always been drawn to Polish folk art, but not commercializedfolk art. Far away in Eastern Poland where country roads cross, you’ll oftenfind a small “santo” standing on a wooden post. Primitive and charming, itwas the art of farmers living in the country where almost every person creat-ed something. I find great beauty in this folk art, which can be religious too.

experienced—loneliness. I can tell you that nobody is more lonely than thementally disturbed. And so I began drawing the loneliness of the figure.

I remember walking down the Avenue of the Americas in New Yorkone cold winter evening in 1966. A shop window with a display of furcoats illuminated a homeless man sitting on the curb with his hands clasping his knees, in a fetal position. I started painting this scene—veryrealistically at first, then with greater abstraction until I captured whatwas, to me, the essence of loneliness.

In 1958, you were asked by the Polish city of Oswiçecim to design a Cultural

Center. Tell us your response to that creative challenge.

Yes, I was asked to be the architectural designer and muralist. I chose tohonor the victims who died at Auschwitz, which is just a few miles fromOswieçcim. The building I designed has whitewings—like an angel’s—with no decoration,no details. It was very contemporary for thetime.

In the theater, I painted a very large mural, bigger than 4,000 square feet, of people inthe sky—colorful, happy people, the way theylook before tragedy strikes. Gradually, theceiling goes dim until you can no longer seethe people in the mural...and what remains isa sky full of stars.

How was the work received by the community?

The local communist party apparatchiks didn’t like what I did, and sothe concept was not fully realized until 2011, when the city spent atremendous amount of time restoring the mural. I was invited backand was happy with the results because, well, it is my baby.

We’ve heard you’re fascinated with explosions. We’re intrigued.

I’ve always considered Mark Rothko one of the greatest artists of the 20thcentury, and when I lived in Houston, I visited the Rothko Chapel manytimes. I looked into the blackness of his paintings and saw not just black, but a vibration that is close to nothingness. At first I had the distinct feel-ing that I should stop painting and destroy everything I’d done; that’s howI felt in the presence of those few great pieces. Then I thought: how couldI, as an artist, go farther? So I began blowing holes in Rothko’s paint-ings—in my mind, you understand—to see what’s on the other side. That’s when I started painting and creating black holes.

You were invited to exhibit at Sotheby’s in Amsterdam. That’s quite an honor. What did that experience mean to you?

Let me explain it this way: I drive my little old car and I can see other carspassing me, going very fast on the contemporary ‘art highway.’ I try to go atmy own speed without trying to adjust my artistic language to the fashion ofthe day. Of course, there have been moments when I’ve had doubts. But theSotheby’s exhibition reinforced that I have been right to go my own way.

If you had to choose your most memorable career moment, what would it be?

A few months ago, the museum in Krakow bought an entire series ofhuman heads that I had painted in 1964. No one had ever bought a singlepainting in this series so I still had all 38 of them—isn’t that extraordinary? And because I make my living as an artist, it’s also meaningful that mypaintings have increased in value.

What brought you to Colorado? And what keeps you here?

Family reasons, actually. My oldest son, Paul, is a diabetic and, with theexception of Stockholm, Denver has the best doctors and hospitals, and themost innovative therapies to treat diabetes. I stay here because my grandsonwas born here, and I am most happy in the moments when I am skiing inthe Colorado mountains with my boys—my son and grandson.

What are you hoping for at this stage in your career?

Many poets and writers describe what I paint, but I haven’t understoodwhat’s behind the images that come from my subconscious. At 80 years old, maybe I will finally be able to look back and understand my art.

SPEND AN AFTERNOON WITH Shery“Bear” McDonald-Galbreath, and you’ll discoverthat she is a delightful study in contrasts.McDonald-Galbreath is founder and president ofthe SaddleUp! Foundation, a nonprofit organiza-tion that provides hippotherapy—a form of physicaltherapy using horses—for disabled clients on her40-acre property in Parker. But this self-describedcowgirl also wears a strand of pearls while muckingthe stalls. “They remind me of my grandmother and

mother,” she says, “both of whom raised me andwore pearls every day,” recalling that when shereceived the gift of her first pearl necklace, hergrandmother said, “‘I don’t care what you’re doing, always wear these.” The strand is McDonald-Galbreath’s way of paying homage to the twowomen who taught her the value of hard work, andthe virtues of generosity, respect and gratitude.

Such principles guided her to start the founda-tion in 2002, after a successful journalism career as

a society writer at the Rocky Mountain News and as an entertainment reporter on Denver’s9News and KIMN radio. Living in Cherry Hills at the time, she and husband Jim were regular volunteers at the Cherry Hills Elementary School carnival, providing horses for thekids’ rides. One year, their daughter Emma, who was six at the time, introduced her parentsto a classmate in a wheelchair. When the young girl said, “Can you help me ride one day?”McDonald-Galbreath knew she had found her life’s work.

With the help of physical therapist Robin Bowman, McDonald-Galbreath started theSaddleUp! Foundation, funding the fledgling charity from her own pocket. What she soonlearned was that often most people who benefit from hippotherapy also require other kindsof treatment as well, such as occupational and speech therapies, along with those involvingart and music. “I saw parents who were driving all over town to get their child the best treat-ment and often had to bring their other children along.” McDonald-Galbreath’s responsewas to provide a number of therapies through SaddleUp!, including occupational, speech, art, music and reading therapies, all on her property and under the guidance of her staff.

Back to the surprising contrasts in McDonald-Galbreath’s nature. When the nonprofitfounder realized she needed an indoor riding arena, she built one on the Parker property. Then the family built a house there and moved from Cherry Hills. “Everyone expects theplace to be designed with Southwestern or cowboy decor,” she says with a laugh. “But I’man English cottage gal. I love blues and yellows and a white fence. I want clients and theirfamilies to feel like they are entering a home, not an institution.”

She also wants her staff and volunteers to feel that their work is an extension of familylife. “My goal is to grow the foundation financially, so I can give more scholarships,”McDonald-Galbreath says of the organization, which survives on donations alone, “but Inever want it to be so big that we lose our sense of family.” SaddleUpFoundation.org

WE WERE JUST WONDERING...Those who know you well call you “Bear.” How did you get

the nickname? I grew up with my mother and grandmother

who gave great hugs, and were also very huggable. They

started calling me Bear whenever we hugged—and it stuck.

What is the most incredible horse ride you’ve taken?

With my husband Jim and my daughter Emma [pictured

above] on our property beneath a full moon. It was

beautiful and wonderful being all together in the moonlight.

What is your favorite room in your home? I love my

kitchen because it reminds me of my grandmother. It’s

yellow and white, very cheerful, and has windows to the

south and French doors to the west. When there’s a

lightning storm, the show from the kitchen is the best.

Tell us about your most indelible horse memory.

It was on Mother’s Day several years ago, right after we

bought our first horse, Prince Phillip. I wasn’t horse-savvy

enough to assert myself as the alpha, and he charged me.

Later that day, after Jim and I agreed that we had to get

rid of him, I went back out to the field feeling sick at heart.

Jim was standing there with Prince Phillip, who was tucking

his head under Jim’s arm, as if to say, ‘I’m so sorry. I will

never do that again.’ That was my Mother’s Day gift, and to

this day, he’s my favorite horse.

the center of it allConstructing a kitchen in the middle of a shoppingcenter is no small task.Fortunately, the project fellinto the capable hands ofWilliam Ohs kitchen design-er Nabeel Faizi. Here, Faizibreaks down the designbehind the stylish and fullyfunctional kitchen at the2012 Home & Lifestyle Show.

Faizi selected CalcuttaGold marble from TheStone Collection for theperimeter countertopsand Caesarstone’s new“Fair Lady” for the cen-ter island. “The marbleacts as a subtle back-drop for the dark walnutcabinetry, and theCaesarstone blends per-fectly with the marble.”

ABOUT THE DESIGNERWith a passion for art and more than 25 years of experience designing kitchens, bathrooms and furniture,Nabeel Faizi’s hobby has become his profession. “As anartist, I have learned how to mix different elements andput pieces of a puzzle together,” he says.

Born and raised in Afghanistan, Faizi was 17 when his family immigrated to the US. “I was studying architecturalengineering, and after moving to the States I pursued myelectrical engineering degree at Colorado State University.”

Faizi has worked with several high-end cabinet companiesand has been designing for William Ohs for six years. When it came to designing this kitchen, he relished theartistic freedom he was allowed. “When I design for aclient, I am influenced by his or her personal style and wish list. In this instance, I was allowed to exhibit my ownindividuality. I could take a little more risk.”

Ohs kitchen:Layout 2 8/1/12 6:08 PM Page 52

Page 57: CH&L

53

In deciding where to place each appliance, Faizicarefully considered the variety of ways inwhich the kitchen would be used throughoutthe show. “We need the flow to work well formultiple chefs as well as audience viewing.”

Painstaking attentionwas paid to the smallestdetails, down to thehardware. “I really want-ed something different,so I spent an inordinateamount of time research-ing pulls and knobs thatweren’t run of the mill.”

Bright backsplash tile“offers the pop of colornecessary to temper thecontrast of the creamycountertops and thedark walnut cabinetry.”

Faizi created the unique oval glass door mul-lions “to accentuate the tall, modern cabinetsat either end,” he says. “The glass-front cabi-netry is traditional, while the ones that flankit are quite contemporary. Marrying the twolooks creates a modern yet classic style.”

Faizi’s custom-designedrange hood, featuringstainless steel with pol-ished steel accents, wasproduced by WeldwrightFabricators. “This is thekitchen’s focal point,” thedesigner says.

After working as a teacherin Denver and the ArcticCircle, William (Bill) Ohsdecides to open a wood-shop—called Bill’s CustomWood Shelving—in a rent-ed three-car garage inArvada, specializing inhandcrafted bookcasesand entertainment centers.

Ohs rents a 400-square-foot show-room—and puts aShaker-style kitchen inthe window—on East6th Avenue in Denver, and recruits a small but skillful group ofdesigners (one of whomis now minority ownerin the company).

Ohs travels throughoutEurope and observes avariety of classic styles—French Country, EnglishManor—that would influence the renderingof his signature furni-ture-like cabinets. (Thecasual elegance of theTuscan-style kitchenwould be his most powerful concept.)

The craftsman, who has abackground in architecture, struggles to make hiswoodworking business athriving enterprise. Hiswife, Nancy, whom Ohscredits for many of thebusiness’s sound decisions, poses a question: Wouldn’tcrafting custom cabinetrybe more financially viable?

56

40 years in the kitchen With his European-style, furniture-like cabinetry,William Ohs changed the face of the Americankitchen industry. Follow the evolution of the Coloradokitchen designer’s company from one-man shop toworld-renowned cabinet manufacturer.

Ohs’ “theme styling”kitchens bring variousEuropean styles into theAmerican home. “Weweren’t creating museumreplicas,” he says, “but thedesigns captured the spirit of a particular style.”Curve-top hutches, deco-rative molding and glazedfinishes are hallmarks ofthe look. Inside, however, the cabinets have all themakings of cutting-edgecontemporary design.

William Ohs-designedkitchens start croppingup outside of Colorado, and discriminatingkitchen showrooms inLos Angeles, Atlantaand Palm Beach beginshowcasing Ohs’ cabi-netry. The company isone of the smallest toadvertise inArchitectural Digest.

Though the company stillcreates the same curvy, traditional look for whichit became famous, itsportfolio includes moremodern-minded designstoo. “I’m still interestedin classic looks,” Ohssays, “meaning thingsthat won’t wear out nextyear, but nowadays I’mlooking more towardtransitional and contemporary styling.”

Ohs purchases a 25,000-square-foot manufacturingplant in Denver, whereevery door and drawerthat comprises a WilliamOhs kitchen would bemanufactured by hand. (In 2005, the companywould adopt an adjacentbuilding, rounding out theplant to the impressive48,000-square-foot plantit fills today.)

Fromslinging hamburgers, pancakes and eggs at a truckstop to workingas Executive Chef at top restaurants like 1515, Euro and Bistro One,Peterson has always known his calling was in the kitchen.

In 1997, Peterson spent six months living in a tent outsideFiesole, Italy, on the grounds of an old castle. Daniel AsherChef Daniel Asher brings more than 18 years of commercial food-service experience to the culinary team at Denver’s Root Downand Linger restaurants.

Inspired by his mom’s culinary talents, he began working by herside in the kitchen at the age of seven. Beginning with “potato-peel-ing duty” and dishwashing at 14, he worked his way around variouskitchens—from fryer to grill, sauté to saucier, pantry to pastry—among culinary luminaries like Chicago’s Charlie Trotter and RickBayless. Founding his own organic catering company and restaurantconsulting firm in 2004 called EcoChef Services, Asher became anew pioneer in the natural foods movement in the Midwest.

His recipes and philosophy have been featured in Bon Appetit,Gourmet, Vegetarian Times and local news media. He is also a certified Raw Foods Chef from the Living Light Culinary Institute inCalifornia, and as a long-time vegetarian, he specializes in plant-based cuisine. Eco-conscious foodservice is his passion, and he findsthe bounty of Colorado’s wonderful terroir incredibly provocative.rootdowndenver; lingerdenver.com

If I weren’t a chef I’d be... a writer and filmmaker. I am fascinatedby the transformative effect of the written word and the visualpower of film to inspire and enchant.

The best thing about living and working in Colorado is... how collaborative and communal the culinary scene is. We all truly want Denver’s food scene to kick ass and complement the vibrantexcitement of our evolving city.

When I’m not cooking, you’ll find me... thinking about cooking, dreaming about food, wandering around a farmers’ market andreading articles about the organic food movement. I’m blessed that my living is also my greatest passion.

The three things I can’t live without are... Faith that everything willinevitably work out the way it is supposed to. Healthy food, cleanwater and fresh air. Love, family and fearless communication.

Annie HustonLandscape designer and gardening expert Annie Huston finds inspi-ration during extensive travels with her husband, Scott, with whomshe owns Denver-based Columbine Design.

Born in the Savoie region of France, Huston says she has alwaysfelt a love for plants and flowers. “As a toddler, I would run into afield of wildflowers and refuse to get back in the car unless I hadpicked all the blooms. I also had a tendency to pick all the flowers inthe neighbors’ gardens to give gigantic bouquets to my mom, whothen had to apologize.”

Arriving in the US as an AFS (American Field Service) student,Huston finished high school in Alexandria, Virginia, and earned adegree in Mass Communications from the University of Denver. Sheand Scott started Columbine Design in 1985 with “one ugly truck, adog that accompanied Scott to projects that he installed himself, amechanical typewriter for creating contracts and a wooden draftingtable where Scott worked in the evenings.”

Huston lectures at the Denver Botanic Gardens and the HudsonGardens, as well as local garden clubs and centers and MasterGardener programs. columbinedesigninc.com

If I weren’t a designer, I’d probably be... a travel writer for Afarmagazine, a photographer for National Geographic, a volunteer forhuman rights organizations, a rancher in Wyoming, a goat shep-herd in the Alps and a rare plant discoverer in the jungle. I still havetime, though.

The best thing about living in Colorado is... the Populus tremu-loides. No matter the season, the aspen is magnificent.

When I’m not gardening, you’ll find me... reading on the frontporch while listening to the gurgle of the fountain, talking to myFrench family on the phone, and most importantly, traveling allover the world with Scott, [and sons] Morgan and Owen.

The three things I can’t live without are... flowers, books and cham-pagne. No, wait: trees, mountains and sun. That’s Colorado, isn’t it?

Ornamental Kale Chidori Red Seeds (Brassica Oleracea Hybrid), noun: Increasingly popular in fall gardens for its beauty and cold hardiness. It’s a lovely complement to chrysanthemums, asters, and pansies. Though it will grow in spring, it will have better color and longer performance in the cool weather of fall. Excellent container plant. (Foliage makes a lovely garnish, but is generally not eaten due to toughness and strong flavor.) To enjoy them in your own gardens, contact Annie at 303 761 6807.

Family-Friendly Gets Fresh

Singing the BluesSome traditional and curvy, others

sleek and angular, these top Coloradokitchens all point to one design truth: a blue kitchen never goes out of style

The ChallengeThe owners of this suburban Denver home were tired of navi-gating a cramped, dated kitchen. With lots of children andgrandchildren showing up for family gatherings, they neededmore space and a smarter layout. “They wanted to open up thekitchen, living room and family room and create a great roomwith plenty of space for a nice, big kitchen,” says interior designer Ingrid Fretheim of Ingrid Fretheim Interiors. “A placewhere everyone could be together.”

Design SolutionA Provence blue La Cornue range set the stage for the design.“The homeowners fell in love with the range and we decided tomatch the island to that color,” says kitchen designer Terri Roseof Exquisite Kitchen Design. “It was a pretty bold move.” Ivorycabinetry on the perimeter of the L-shaped kitchen tempersthe blue and adds interest with furniture-like details: legs, crown molding, a wood-paneled stove hood and varied uppercabinet heights. Texture comes into play with hand-paintedand glazed backsplash tiles, leathered Tidal White granitecountertops and an end-grain white oak accent counter. Openshelving and glass-front cabinets display bright accessories, while handmade wool rugs pull together all the colors in theroom. The result, says Fretheim, is a “timeless and traditionalkitchen with a bit of European sophistication.”

The Details❖ Separate areas for each major activity—

food prep, cooking and cleanup—andmultiple ovens, sinks, dishwashers andrefrigerators allow multiple cooks towork together.

❖ Upper display cabinets loom large andoffer ample storage by extending to thecountertop in some areas, but with theirshallow depth (8 to 9 inches), counterspace remains intact.

❖ A fresh blue-and-white palette is warmedwith buttery yellow walls, painted inBenjamin Moore’s Desert Tan. The beauty of blue, says Fretheim, is that itlooks good with almost any accent color.

Clean and

SimpleA sleek design allows mountain views to shine

in this highly functional custom kitchen

BY NANCY RICHMAN MILLIGAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAVID PATTERSON

The ChallengeThe owner of a new contemporary home in Breckenridge told KathyeConti, CKD, of Kitchenscapes, Inc., that her vision for the kitchen was aspace so clean and simple that she could almost hose it down. “It was allabout form and function for her,” Conti says. The kitchen also needed tomeet two specific objectives: to honor the connection with nature and toprovide a custom design for the avid cook and baker.

Design SolutionThe crisp blue-and-white palette plays off views of mountains and sky ondisplay through a stunning wall of windows. Deep blue cabinetry has ahigh-gloss foil finish that contrasts beautifully with stainless steel andthree different countertop materials: white quartz, a concrete-and-glasscomposite and lighted glass. To accommodate the homeowner’s love ofbaking, the designer added two raised ovens that flank a cabinet forhousing baking supplies and tools. An induction cooktop and two gasburners stand by for any cooking project and an oversized downdraft offers ventilation without blocking views. An art glass bowl from Pismoprovides a dramatic finishing touch.

In a feat of engineering, Conti meticulously aligned the cabinets alonga curved window wall and worked in multiple dishwasher drawers, asteam/microwave oven, a built-in coffee bar, two recycling stations and awide refrigerator/freezer. “People spend a lot of time thinking about theirdream kitchen,” Conti says, “and most custom kitchens are designedaround the appliances.”

The Details❖ Conti took ergonomics into account with the design

of this kitchen, sizing features to the appropriateheight for the homeowner. She also raised the heightof two separate wall ovens—rather than installing thetypical stacked pair—for the ease of her client, whobakes frequently.

❖ A wall of windows means sacrificing upper cabinets, but Conti made up for the deficit with alternativestorage in pantries and lower cabinets. “Water glassesand dishes also fit perfectly into drawers,” she says.

❖ Inverting the cabinetry below the sinks–in otherwords, placing the drawer below the cabinetinstead of the other way around—avoids wastedspace and adds storage.

The ChallengeDesigned for an active young family, this newly built home has an agedaura that fits right into Denver’s venerable Observatory Park neighbor-hood. The homeowners, Stephen Martin and Lucie Lawrence, desired akitchen that had an open floor plan and modern conveniences, yet embraced old fashioned elements. “We envisioned a warm, cottage-stylekitchen where family gathers around the hearth,” Martin says.

Design SolutionThe focal point of the room is a modern-day hearth—a stone niche that“harkens back to old cooking fireplaces,” says architect Bryan Gunn ofStudio Gunn Architecture. Gunn maximized the footprint of the roomwith long banks of perimeter cabinetry and a large, hard-working islandthat provides prep and eating space and abundant storage. The dishwasher and microwave are hiddenbehind cabinetry, while plates are stored on an open rackabove the farmhouse sink. “Even with all the old fash-ioned elements, it is still a very modern, functional layoutthat accommodates family life,” Gunn says.

The Details❖ Cohesive materials tie the kitchen in with the rest of

the home: the range surround (accented by QuangHo’s Meyer Lemons from Saks Galleries) features thesame natural stone used on the home’s fireplace andexterior; the barn wood beam above the range echoesthe ceiling beams in the adjoining great room.

❖ While reproductions of vintage styles work well forlighting and fixtures, aged materials, such as the 200-year-old wood beams and reclaimed pine floors, addauthenticity and rich patina.

❖ It didn’t consume much space to incorporate a workstation into the kitchen. Tucked away in the cornerunder the arch, a desk and cupboards hold a comput-er, charging docks, cookbooks and files.

TuscanRetreatA New World home boasts a kitchen with Old World charm

BY CHERYL MEYERS PHOTOGRAPHY BY WARREN JORDAN

The ChallengeWhen kitchen designer Nabeel Faizi ofWilliam Ohs was hired to design the kitchenfor this newly constructed 13,000-square-foothome in Pueblo, the first thing he did was askthe clients to describe the style of their home’sarchitecture. After some consideration, theycame up with “Southern Villa.” And for thekitchen? “The client wanted to create a roomthat, like the rest of the house, evoked OldWorld grandeur,” Faizi says. “But they alsowanted a manageable working space”—a placewhere they could actually cook and entertain. When Faizi suggested a Tuscan-style kitchenthe clients immediately got on board.

Design SolutionThe biggest challenge, says Faizi, was workingwith such a grand volume of space. “We wantedto design it so that every appliance and fixturewas within reach, but we also needed to balanceelements to fill the room.” The solution was aU-shaped layout with two seven-foot islands—one that would function as the workspace, theother as a serving area. To evoke the craftsman-ship and ornate details of a traditional Tuscankitchen, Faizi assembled a mix of finishes, including crown moldings and pilaster detailsthat make the cabinets feel like pieces ofantique furniture. The wood throughout isalder, but the finishes vary greatly to createwarmth and interest: the perimeter of thekitchen is ivory; the armoire that houses theSub-Zero refrigerator is celadon; and the butler’s pantry is papyrus with custom etching.

The Details❖ To evoke the look of a

centuries-old kitchen—backwhen there were no stainlesssteel refrigerators, microwavesand dishwashers—Faizi gotcreative in concealing the 21stcentury appliances. Themicrowave is in a drawer andthe refrigerator is encased inalder wood.

❖ The 43-inch La Cornue rangefeatures an antique-style blackfinish and copper trim. To create a truly Old World-stylekitchen, says Faizi, cabinetsshould resemble pieces of furniture rather than utilitarianstorage units. The islands inthis kitchen are a perfect example, with their traditionalbombé-style curved design.

❖ With the right custom finishes,a brand-new kitchen can looklike it’s been around for hun-dreds of years, says Faizi. Bychoosing creamy colors and acrackle finish for the cabinets,he was able to make the spacelook as if it had aged beauti-fully from centuries of use.

STAND IN THEsouth-facing loggia of thisSpanish Revival home inCherry Hills Village, take inyour surroundings and berewarded with a direct viewof Pikes Peak. Turn exactly90 degrees west and you’llspot Mount Evans. Nowcross those two sight linesand you’ve traced the mainaxes of this stone-and-stuccoabode. “That kind of crossingis an important element inSpanish Revival design,”architect Don Ruggles says.

Indeed, those sight lines—and the views—are the start-ing point for the layout of thehouse. While the loggiasframe the vistas, the interiorspaces are carefully arrangedto flow from enclosed volumes to light-filled cov-ered walkways, then out ontowide-open terraced lawns.

The loggia provides shady respite from the Coloradosun. Denver interior designer Mikhail Dantes treated thesheltered space like an exterior living room, groupingfurnishings into functional areas. “The furniture style isa little bit classic and a little bit contemporary,” he says.Outdoor fabrics are from DeLany & Long. A pair of console tables sits along the wall, providing usable surfaces for food or drinks. Architect Don Rugglesspecified that the Douglas fir beamwork be staineddark in keeping with the Spanish Revival style.

Ruggles:Layout 2 7/31/12 2:25 PM Page 99

Page 104: CH&L

100

It takes more than thoughtful vistas and a carefullayout to create a Spanish Revival composition, though. “To support the style you have to get the fundamentals right,” says Ruggles, who uses a specific recipe of materials—thick stucco walls, redtile roofing, ironwork and deep-set windowstrimmed with stone and accents of tile—to recreatethe iconic style that sprang from the early Californiamissions. While these elements are historical,Ruggles also channels local inspiration into hisdesigns, particularly for these nature-loving home-owners: “There is a row of trees on the site and Iechoed the curved shapes of their canopy to createthe slightly flattened arches we used.”

But the real celebration of the owners’ intimateconnection with nature—and their passion for grow-ing their own food—was expressed with the help oflandscape architect Herb Schaal, FASLA, who created a rabbit-proof, 600-square-foot kitchen garden (which is enclosed by a three-foot-high buffsandstone wall). Within the plot, he laid out raisedbeds for tomatoes, beans, carrots and the like. On theouter edges of the 2.5-acre site lie beds for vegetablesthat require more room to sprawl, like squash andpumpkins. Chickens in a coop provide eggs.

Ruggles and landscape designer Herb Schaal worked together to create a seamlesstransition from home to garden. A trellis of laminated beams frames views with itsspacious curve, and the terraced grass area steps down to rows of grapevines.

Vegetables aren’t the only delicacies these homeowners harvest. Their property also contains a full-fledged vineyard—with more than 200 vines yieldingcabernet sauvignon, merlot and muscat grapes—that Schaal designed in a semi-circle to echo the lines of the house. “The owners have been making their ownwine for years,” he says.

The family connects with its environment in deeper ways as well. The lowerbass pond is sited so that in March and September, the equinox months, the fullmoon reflects upon its surface. A path lined with sandstone pavers and thymeplants invites meditative strolls. Brass lines on a customized sundial mark wherethe sun will rise on the children’s birthdays.

Of all these outdoor features, perhaps most beautiful is the terrace off thesouth-facing loggia, where a swath of grass accommodates guests for fundraisersand parties. On one side is an outdoor kitchen, and on the other the expansivewater feature designed by Schaal—a cascade that flows along a stone wall, theninto a boulder-strewn stream flanked with water iris, sedges and Mexican feathergrass and finally around the hot tub and into the bass pond. “This feature, thisentire home, is a celebration of the owners’ passionate interest in connectingdesign and nature.”

AFTER THE PETERSON FAMILY ADOPTEDthis spec home, designed by architect ScottTurnipseed, they turned to Vail-based Slifer Designs’ president Yvonne Jacobs anddesign associate Audrey Barriault to make it their own. A Colorado native with 20 years of design experience, Jacobs knew how to create a space that’s just right for its alpine setting: add comfort and style with nature-inspired touches.

CH&L: Give us the back story. How did this project get its start?

Yvonne Jacobs: Mark and Polly Peterson have a wonderful familytradition of skiing in Vail over the holidays. Mark visited as achild and now the couple brings their children from their homein South Dakota. Longtime clients of mine, the Petersons askedme to remodel and furnish their first Vail home in 2007. Thenwhen the family fell in love with Scott Turnipseed’s work, wewere brought in to do the interior. They wanted the look to be anextension of the architecture, which meant using lighter, softercolors. Our goal was to create a family-oriented space, since thePetersons have dogs, kids, et cetera. They didn’t want anything tobe too precious, but they do enjoy nice things.

How did the surrounding landscape inspire your design?

The sunlight that comes into this house is amazing, so we wantedto play that up. What’s more, every window in this house has aview. We used those concepts as the inspiration for bringing innatural colors and light. Most of the larger furniture is positionedto overlook the view, making the scenery a form of art.

The look is cozy, but not ubiquitous or dull.

We tried to remain natural with the color palette, using chocolatebrown, sage green and burnt orange—colors that complementthe picturesque landscape. The [spec] finishes were light, so weadded richness with mohair and chenille fabrics. We threw in anedgy piece here and there, such as the area rug in the great roomthat grounds the space while adding a twist to ward off boredom.Touches of bright color—green dishware in the kitchen, fierythrow pillows on the patio—make the softer palette pop.

In the dining area off the kitchen, a collectionof Michael Berman chairs and a Bausman & Company dining table collaborate to form a vignette that’s anchored by subdued Kravetlounge chairs. An unexpected centerpiecemade of rustic wood completes the look.

Our goal was to create afamily-oriented space, sincethe Petersons have dogs, kids,et cetera. They didn’t wantanything to be too precious, but they do enjoy nice things.

We love the beautifully arranged bookshelf in the library. What are your tips for

recreating that kind of display?

It took me a week to get that bookshelf right! What you see is an artistic display; it isn’t something we just threw together. You start with books—various sizes, shapes and colors—then add accessories. The key is to movethings around, to try arranging items in a bunch of different positions. I’dwalk away for a day then return with a fresh perspective, or take a photo tolook at later on. Ultimately, it is all about the juxtaposition of large and small.

For the home’s art, you opted for a less-is-more approach by incorporating a few

attention-grabbing pieces. How did you pull that off?

It was a huge effort to get the art just right, a process of being in the house, walking around, finding the right colors and positioning for each space. ThePetersons don’t like things to be overdone, which is why the artwork isn’toverwhelming. When you have a strong piece like a Theodore Waddell, there’s no need to overpower it. The same goes for Thomas Swanston’s Look!A Crane Overhead, found in the master bedroom. The bright gilded piece wasplaced on a huge wall so its reflection would brighten the whole room.

(above) In the cozy library, where the familyrelaxes, symmetry prevails. The custom couchfrom Richman Upholstery is covered in graymohair and sits perpendicular to woven linenwindowpane-patterned Century chairs, while acustom leather-upholstered cocktail ottomananchors the arrangement. For additional seating, round hair-on-hide Kravet stools can be pulled infrom the hallway. Sheer drapes adorned with abranch-and-tree motif let natural light into thespace, and the contents of the bookshelves werecarefully arranged by interior designer YvonneJacobs. (opposite) By juxtaposing a simpleantique chair and Chinese wicker baskets againstthe limestone walls, Jacobs grounded the contemporary kitchen with warm touches and, in effect, brought down the high ceilings. Thelimestone bricks—Pillowed Halila from DecorativeMaterials—add interest and dimension, and theseafoam green granite introduces subtle color.

Share with us how the home reflects the Petersons’ personalities.

Walk into the house and you’ll see both sides of the homeowners. On the one hand, the Petersonsare very family-oriented; they relish every moment together. That’s why we created rooms conducive to gathering with family and friends. At the same time, they like the finer things in life. They appreciate quality and understand the difference between buying a generic, mass-producedpiece versus buying something local or handcrafted. The home is an absolute convergence of thesedistinct traits.

A Place to GrowIt started as a simple remodeland developed into a majorrenovation—and now, thisCherry Hills Village home isthe perfect spot for a happyfamily of sevenBY MARY BARTHELME ABEL PHOTOGRAPHY BY J CURTIS

IN THE DESIGN WORLD, IT’S CALLED THE DOMINO EFFECT.You buy a home with the intention of changing just a few details. That turnsinto remodeling a few rooms and incorporating a small addition. Before youknow it, the home is stripped to the studs and ready for a major do-over.

That’s precisely what happened with Chris Bittman and Kenda Noble, who purchased their Denver home in order to put down roots and raise fivechildren. But to say they embarked upon a complete renovation is an under-statement. With the help of San Francisco-based architect Kurt Lavenson(who helped them renovate two previous homes), the couple nearly doubledthe size of of their 1970s home with additions and a basement expansion.

A Grand Gathering PlaceThe family expanded the home to add the well-appointed great room(opposite), or as they like to call it, The Ballroom. “Our home in Californiawas built in 1932 and had a western ballroom,” explains Bittman. “Wewanted to recreate the look of that space here.” Hand-scraped walnutfloors, large timber trusses and rustic chandeliers from Laura Lee Designcreate the western feel; sofas upholstered in luscious Brunschwig & Filsroyal blue chenille paired with an eclectic mix of antiques keep the roomfrom becoming overly themed. “We wanted a place to entertain, where ourfamily could just hang out by the fireplace,” Noble adds.

Literary Masterpiece“We think all homes should have a library,” Bittman says. And since theformal dining room doesn’t get much use, the couple decided to give thespace a split personality by lining the walls with custom shelves in which todisplay their extensive book collection.

It is a collection well worth showcasing: each and every book is signedby its author—including 24 American presidents. “The room is a greatconversation piece for guests,” Bittman says.

Also attached to a good story is the stunning mahogany ball-and-clawtable, made by Bittman’s great-grandfather around the turn of the century.A Pakistani rug from Soraya Rugs in San Francisco grounds the decidedlymasculine space, and a crystal chandelier adds a touch of feminine sparkle.

Bittman:Layout 2 7/31/12 6:01 PM Page 113

Page 118: CH&L

114

Family-Style Dining“There are seven of us, and more often than not, a few other kids,” Noble says. “We needed a big table, and thatdrove the size and flow of the room.” The commanding table, from Colorado Style Home Furnishings, expandsto seat twelve. A circa-1890 Tibetan cabinet, pendant lights from Visual Comfort and a perfectly faded rug fromShaver-Ramsey complete the space.

Adjacent to the kitchen, the open and sunlit dining space is part of a long view from the kitchen to the greatroom. “This sort of flow works well throughout the house,” Lavenson says. “Walking through that narrow passageway into the great room makes entering the space much more dramatic.”

Bittman:Layout 2 7/31/12 6:03 PM Page 114

Page 119: CH&L

Light and AiryThe design of the charming family room started with the drapery fabric, LeeJofa’s Bambu Volante, which Noble “fell in love with right away.”

Like other spaces in the home, this comfortable room is filled with an easymix of new furnishings and collected pieces Bittman and Noble picked upduring their travels. “Actually, I think the pieces collected us,” laughs Bittman.“We like things that have a great story. Even if we don’t have a place for anitem, we’re compelled to buy it if it has a great story and a sense of history.”

Here, a new sofa from Moda Antica is flanked by a 1920s Spanish Revivalconsole found at a shop in Pasadena, California. A simple sisal rug keeps thespace light, while a handsome upholstered side chair and an abstract paintingby Miani Carnevale from Walker Fine Art add a lively pop of color.

The Starting PointAlthough the home itself called to the couple—“We knew we could behappy here,” recalls Bittman—it was the lush, park-like 2.5 acres on whichit is situated that really sealed the deal. “The lot was beautiful, with a pooland a great gazebo,” says Noble.

As beautiful as it was, Bittman and Noble were still able to add theirpersonal touch. They worked with Lavenson to renovate the tired pool, and with landscape designer Mike Eagleton to upgrade the gardens.

Revamping the home’s entrance was also high on the priority list. “Theoriginal entry was uninviting and hard to find,” Lavenson says. “Weredesigned it so that it sweeps you into the home. Its relationship with thehouse is now completely different.”

Fit For a CrowdOne of three kitchens in the home, the main kitchen is a shining exam-ple of form married to function. The large island, custom-made byJay Minors of Golden Cabinets &Design, was inspired by a picture ofan old French kitchen island Nobletore from a magazine. “Its construc-tion was a labor of love,” she says,“and it can seat a lot of kids forbreakfast.” With a butcher-blocktop, a large Vermont Soapstone sinkand two dishwashers, the center-piece brilliantly combines modernconvenience with an Old-Worldaesthetic.

Lining the perimeter of the spaceand framing the Lacanche range, therich red cabinetry by Aspen LeafKitchens keeps this hard-workingroom from feeling too serious.Custom leaded glass panels made byDenver’s Bella Glass Studios add tothe aged feel.

The homeowners love the roomfor its old-meets-new appeal, andhow the space is perched within thehouse. “The room faces west andlooks over the back grounds. It’s upone level from the main floor, so youreally feel like you’re in a treehouse.”

A Hostess’s DreamThis additional full kitchen is just one part of the fully renovated and expanded basement that also includes a largefamily room, guest suite, gym and wine cellar. Leading outside to a pool and play area, the small but convenient kitchenallows the family to keep outdoor parties to one level. “We really enjoy entertaining and this has been a fun additionto the house,” Bittman says. Pretty blue-and-cream tiles from Decorative Materials add pattern to the quiet Durangotravertine countertops and warm wood cabinetry.

Grown-Up RetreatWhat was once a dark, claustrophobic space is now a bright and spa-likeescape. “The original master suite was large and in a good location, but itwas sort of ‘old country style,’” Bittman says. “Dark, with pine every-where.” The solution? Steal space from the attic to raise the roof, add sky-lights and paint the ceiling white.

With reclaimed tumbled marble flooring (which required the floorto be reinforced), Jerusalem Gold mosaic tile surrounding the tub andlining the back wall, and warm mahogany cabinetry, the space is pureluxury. A large trough sink from Sonoma Cast Stone keeps the spacefrom feeling too formal.

The master bedroom is also elegant yet casual. The bed, with its prettyupholstered headboard and casual linens, takes center stage, while classicside tables, modern lamps and fun benches continue the home’s eclectic,not-so-serious style. Rich grasscloth wallpaper and a Karin Schminke printadd warmth to the space, with the help of a fireplace opposite the bed.

A Happy Ending“When we first saw this home, we knew that a large family had lived hereand that it was a happy place,” Bittman says. “We don’t have a single stylethat we favor,” adds Noble, “ but we knew we could make the home ours:comfortable and focused around our family.”

By Mark Samuelson

When Brian Hazen moved to Aspen in 1972, the town on the Roaring Fork River was already decades into a battle over growth – perpetually item number one on the agenda of the Aspen City Council and the Pitkin County Commissioners. The entities were hemmed in by National Forest and BLM ground comprising 85-percent of their land area, at a time when Americans had en-masse discovered skiing and when political elites and Hollywood stars had begun making pilgrimages to the Victorian town. Back in the 1890s, Aspen had seen boom and bust when the silver crash sent its fortunes plummeting, and anti-growth advocates were determined that Aspen’s newly prized resources – snow and scenery – wouldn’t become the makings of another apocalypse.

In 1977, Aspen and Pitkin County limited their growth rate to 3.47-percent per year, along lines of an ordinance passed in Petaluma, Calif. Hazen, who got his real estate license that same year, now a Coldwell Banker Previews International Agent, says Aspen land has become one

of the nation’s rarest commodities – something that buoys the market against slides that Phoenix, Fla. and Las Vegas suffered after their own booms.

“I’ve always believed we would be last affected and first to recover,” he adds, noting that local prices bottomed out in 2010, and properties are seeing appreciation again.

Meanwhile, the town’s ambience now creates a resort with two peak seasons: summer as popular, maybe even more so, than ski season. “This is a historic community that became a resort, rather

than a resort trying to be a community,” Hazen says, adding that his church and fire department both date from 1882. With popular festivals launched by Aspen Institute founder Walter Paepcke, Aspen does what East Coast resorts dream about – attracts glitterati to what they see as a permanent residence, served by 130 restaurants, with scenery as alluring in May or September as in December or July.

“The secret of Aspen has always been people who come to live and enjoy, not to buy and flip,” Hazen adds. He’s now listed in Who’s Who in Real Estate’s

Billionaires Club – and tracks purchasers from Wall Street, Brazil and Argentina, and Continentals fleeing a weak Euro. In a market where a small house in West End near downtown commands $4 million, his newest listing is in Starwood: a 16,000 square foot estate on 4.3 acres, at $21.9 million.

With a recovering market evident, the town on the Roaring Fork controls resources more valuable than rare-earth minerals: snow, stunning scenery and growth-restricted real estate

Spring for smart storage. Landeros

recommends storage solutions such

as the “function boxes” that come with

bulthaup’s b3 line. Doors flip open to

reveal knives, cutting boards, scrubbies

and other everyday usables.

Start fresh. “Lots of Coloradans are pulling

out their old kitchens and installing easier

to clean, low-maintenance European cabi-

netry,” Landeros says. The so-hot-right-

now look is bronze- or graphite-shaded

aluminum warmed by black oak or walnut.

Be flexible. Instead of incorporating the

big range that you rarely really need,

consider a Fagor portable induction

cooktop, says Samantha Bales, principal

at Studio2b, a Denver design house that

carries swanky European lines like

Poggenpohl. “You store it in a drawer and

only pull it out for big meals,” she says.

Keep it sleek. “European kitchens are

trending very contemporary,” says Mikal

Otten, lead kitchen designer and owner of

Exquisite Kitchen Design, who likes the

look of horizontal lines and warm woods

juxtaposed against cool stone floors.

Declutter the countertop. William

Landeros, designer and showroom

director at bulthaup Denver, says,

“Europeans are fierce about moving

unnecessary clutter off the counter.”

Follow suit by stowing everything

that you don’t use daily.

Functionality first is the European way.

Assess the organization of your cabinets.

Are your dishes within easy reach of the

dishwasher? Spices near the stove? Do

you have utensils organized by function:

prepping, cooking and serving?

Choose “quiet” countertops. “Quartz

countertops like Caesarstone are very

popular right now,” Landeros says. “They

don’t have a busy pattern like granite does

and create more harmony in the space.”

Materials matter. “Europeans love natural

materials,” says Otten, who is partial to

Carrera marble, woods such as larch or

fumed oak, and metals like iron and steel.

Microwave begone! Bales loves her

Gaggenau combination convection-and-

steam oven, which “cooks nearly as fast

as a microwave, but never dries out the

food.” Better yet? One more appliance

is eliminated from the space.

Grow your own herbs in style. It’s très chic

to grow your own herbs, but traditional

pots may cramp the sleek Euro style.

Modern, self-watering pots (like Eva Solo’s

Herb Pot) make functional look fabulous.
