Everything adds up in the Maths Department

CHISWICK SCHOOL

A 2-1 win over Highgate Woods School saw the Year 10 boys into the next round of the Middlesex County cup.

The game was played at 2-0 to Chis-wick into the 89th minute, Kristian Gecaj fired in two goals to give Chis-wick the lead with both sides look-ing to make a cutting edge run to put the ball in the back of the net. A very late goal from Highgate Woods School cut through defence just be-fore the end of the game to make the score 2-1 Chiswick. Year 10 coach Mr Hird described the game as " A really poor first half but the boys managed to turn it around in the second half." Man of the match went to Peter Lo-vatt for his incredible efforts on the day!

Meanwhile, over on the Netball court the Year 8 girls came home with a 12-4 win over The Green School. The girls, who played their opposition away, thrashed the Green School with shooters Tilly Frost and Emily Cobb scoring 12 goals between them. Green were left totally defeat-ed. Football and Netball Stars Excel

With 81% A*-C at GCSE and 100% A*-D at A-level, Chiswick’s Maths de-partment is delivering its best results yet and is an outstanding department. All students at GCSE in set 1-6 have at least a C grade in their Maths. At GCSE there have been thirteen A* and at A-level there have been four.

So what makes the Maths department achieve so highly? All the teachers offer after school help and revision classes for students; pupils can come to teach-ers during both breaks for assistance and every Friday the Sixth Form have the benefit of a teacher’s support after school. The staff are approachable and friendly, therefore making Maths more enjoyable.

Talia Louki, 11 Fielding, is considering taking Maths for A-level. She said ‘I like it because it’s interactive and breaks up the day.’ Miss Goulbourne said ‘I think people enjoy doing Maths and realise it is important.’ The Maths department at Chiswick is in the top 10% in the coun-try for teaching A-level and is achieving higher and higher with its results.

Some Year 9 students commented on

why they like Maths and what they en-joy. Dea Lala said 'I like Maths because I love numbers and things to do with algebra.' 'It's easy to work out and I am taught well by my teacher', continued Finnian Stanford. 'My favourite Maths activity is drawing graphs because I am a visual learner', explained Saleem Abed.

More students are opting to take Maths as an A-level, with four classes of stu-dents choosing it. Zak Abdille in Year 13 is hoping to go into Medicine. 'You do not need Maths for Medicine, but I really like it because the problem solv-ing keeps you on your toes. It's really good that the teachers mark your work fast and you get it back straight away.'

Year 10 Information Evening Success

Recently some of the terms of office for the school's Governing Body expired and elections were held to vote in 6 new parent governors. Each nominee wrote a paragraph on why they should be voted in - all of which were then sent home for parents to read and then vote for who they wanted to be on in the group. Governors can be teachers, par-ents or members of the community; all want to help contribute to the advances and brilliant changes that are happen-ing in our school such as our new can-teen, gym and the ICT changing beyond recognition!

I interviewed Deborah Pryce who is currently standing as a parent governor with children in year 7 & 11 about why she wanted to become a governor.

Another Year 13 student Marwah Salih summed it up.'I like Maths and I like the teachers. It's fun and I'm good at it.' she said.

The last word must go to Miss Sen-siong, Chiswick's Maths Team Leader who explained why the department was so successful. 'My team is dedicated and has excellent subject knowledge. The core of the team has been together a long time and we are experienced at exam preparation. Nobody minds going the extra mile for a student. We care.'

New Parent Governors Elected

"When my daughter first came to this school I wanted to support the com-munity of the school and be part of the big changes taking place. I was on the panel of interviewers for the role of Headteacher after Mr Howson and just wanted to help put more into the school. I have recently been re-elected, which I wanted to do because it's a very exciting time for Chiswick School and changes are happening."

The Governors received special train-ing last Saturday from both the Chair of Governors, Andrew Dodge, and Mr Ryan. They were able to discuss at length topics which will help them im-prove their role in the future and vision for the school.

Year 10 students were spoiled at this meeting, with a bid of £2,600 approved to enable the entire year group to visit the ‘World Skills Show’ a careers event in Birmingham. We will be reporting on the event in due course.

Students studying DT will benefit tre-mendously from £8000 plus worth of investment. One of the workshops is being kitted out with new chairs and benches. As well as this students will have access to some of the latest CAD/CAM technology to ensure they can produce high quality products.

The Sixth Form will benefit too from outdoor furnishings on their new pa-tio connected to the Common Room by new French Windows.

Other areas to benefit have been the annual drama production and sports facilities through new gymnastic mats and reseeded pitches. Chiswick School News was lucky enough to get fund-ing for Dictaphones to use to record interviews. Finally all students will be pleased that funding for water foun-tains has been identified. The School Parliament has been asking for this for some time.

The PTA raises these incredible amounts through their monthly car boot sales. If you are a parent or Sixth Former you too can work a couple of Sunday mornings a year knowing that the time you give will directly ben-efit the school. and all that fun stuff! It aimed to pre-pare pupils for what was to come in the next two years and on how to perform to the best of their ability. Revision tips, exam content and WEX factor information were also covered in the presentation. Head of Year 8, Ms Mid-dleton said "This was a very success-ful evening with an excellent turn out. Parents have gone away feeling better informed and are therefore in a bet-ter position to help their child through KS4".

Let's hope that with this evening and the help and support from all their teachers Year 10 students will make a brilliant start on their exams; feeling happy, relaxed and confident in their capabilities!By NiNa Pryce
