The Commission formally opposes the Governor’s Bay Delta Conservation Plan and the construction of tunnels to divert delta water. The Commission’s opposition is largely due to unfulfilled promises which includes the potential loss of legacy farms and other productive agricultural lands and the destruction of habitat. Program: Eric Vink, Executive Director, Delta Protection Commission

Speaker Eric Vink was appointed Executive Director of

the Delta Protection Commission just last August. The

Commission was created in 1992 to oversee matters in

the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. The area under the

Commission’s purview is a legislatively defined area

encompassing Delta watershed. The Commission is comprised of 15

members representing Delta cities and counties, reclamation districts

and water agencies, and state agencies. The Commission is constantly

trying to maintain a balance in the Delta among competing goals of

ensuring water reliability, restoring the ecosystem, offering recreational

opportunities, and maintaining the cultural and agricultural heritage.

The Delta is divided into two zones; primary and secondary. The

primary zone has about 15,000 residents and is virtually unchanged

over the last generation, The secondary zone’s population has increased

dramatically. A key role for the Commission is to maintain and

implement a resource management plan for the primary zone of the

Delta. The plan is to guide projects impacting land use, agriculture,

natural resources, water, levees, and utilities and infrastructure.

General plans and projects in the five Delta counties must be consistent

with the management plan, and are subject to review by the

Commission. The Commission formally opposes the Governor’s Bay

Delta Conservation Plan and the construction of tunnels to divert delta

water. The Commission’s opposition is largely due to unfulfilled

promises which includes the potential loss of legacy farms and other

productive agricultural lands and the destruction of habitat.

4 Way Test

Of the Things we Think, Say or Do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?

2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?

3. Will it build GOODWILL and better FRIENDSHIPS?

4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all con-cerned?

SENIOR GIFT GIVING

The Holiday Season is now upon us.

The Club with assistance from the

Interact members, will once again

participate in the Senior Gift Giving

Program. The program will deliver

gifts to the disadvantaged seniors in West Sacramento and Clarksburg.

Shoppers will select an ornament that contains the holiday wish of a

senior in our community. Upon leaving the store, the shopper will drop

off the gift with us. We will then wrap and deliver the gifts in time for

Christmas. and undoubtedly provide some much needed Holiday cheer.

Volunteers are needed at the West Sacramento Raleys on December

14th and 15th to work in shifts of two hour increments from 10:00 am to

4:00 pm. A sign up sheet will be circulated at the club meetings.

For more information, contact Jeremiah Smith or Ken Wilson.

FUTURE ROTARIAN:

Vanessa Yang

Vanessa Yang is a Senior at River

City High School and has been an

active member in the Interact Club.

She currently serves as the Club’s

secretary. She has found that being

in Interact can be fun. While

attending the Interact Conference

at Sacramento State University,

Vanessa was required to run around the campus

and take pictures of squirrels for a scavenger

hunt. Vanessa has also realized the important

work that Interact can do. She is proud of the

work the Club has done in providing clean water

in Cambodia. After graduating, Vanessa plans on

studying psychology at the University of

California, Santa Cruz.
