A touch of “blue” class was brought to the

Mighty Rotary Club of West Sacramento with

the presentation by Gregory Kondos. With his

wife, Moni Van Camp at his side, Gregory talked

about his life history and his passion for painting.

Gregory decided to become an artist following

his tour during World War II. When he told his

father his plans of becoming a painter, he

initially said nothing, but then replied, “go for it.” Now 90-year old,

Gregory continues to paint with gusto. Occasionally he gets up at 2:00 or

3:00 in the morning and paints. Paul Cezanne was one of Kondos’

mentors when he lived in France. It was while living Europe than he

took time to understand the people and become part of the community.

This enable him to capture the essence of what he was painting. Gregory

mentioned several requirements of being an painter; 1) You need to

learn to draw, 2) you need to realize that you have talent, and 3) you

need to have an ego. With a little banter between Moni and him,

Gregory presented an array of his paintings with a little history of each

one. His approach to a painting is, “the simpler, the better.” People are

able to take in his subject quicker and avoid all the distractions.

Gregory’s book “A Touch of Blue” is so titled because he likes to paint

with blue. Gregory has painted subjects from all around the world.

Some of his most famous works include our own backyard, the Delta.
