The Vice-Presidents Note

School has started and so has a new year for Key

Club! There has been much excitement for the new year

among the officers, especially, and I know that our new

members will have a positive outlook on Key Club as we

prepare for Club Rush Week! Service is always something

that is needed in your community. Being a Key Clubber

means expressing the spirit of service Key Club has to of-

fer to every individual, and that is what we wish to focus

on in the upcoming year! We will be working hard to find

and secure fun socials and events to continue the mo-

mentum of our success from the past year! Thank you,

and look out for those clothespins bearing the Key Club

name that we'll be sticking on unsuspecting passers dur-

ing Club Rush!

Yours in Service, Jonathon Woo and Muhammad

Islam

What happened over summer?

Relay for Life

The amazing and inspirational event, Re-

lay For Life, was celebrated by many Key

Clubbers this year! We all joined together in

the fight against cancer, and had a ton of fun

as well! From dressing up our Key Club men in

make-up and skirts, to selling cold, refreshing

ice cream on a hot day, we all joined together

for a worthy cause. We took turns walking the

track and visiting other booths that were also

supporting the event. Luminaria was a very

special part of the night, as we walked in re-

spect of those who had suffered from cancer.

As tiring as a 24-hour event can be, the Key

Clubbers' lively spirit helped beat the heat and

fatigue!

Ice Skating

During the entire course of the summer, we've had the privilege of selling ice

cream and glow sticks at our local Concerts in the Park. Concerts is held every Wednesday

night through the months of June- August, where there are bands playing live music and

vendors selling special goods. Chino Hills High School Key Club teams up with our sponsor-

ing Kiwanis Members to fundraise during this time. We arrive at Veteran's Park at 5:50 and

set up the EZ up and tables, and an officer brings an ice chest full of delicious ice cream.

We then sell the ice cream along with glow sticks during the night until 8:30, then we will

break everything down and clean up. It's great to be volunteering in such a cool environ-

ment with nice, live music playing and the cool summer breeze. We know how important it

is to maintain good relations with the Kiwanis Members

so we're really thankful to have the opportunity to dis-

cuss with them about future events and other topics

concerning our service. Also, one of our Kiwanis Spon-

sors was named Outstanding Citizen of the year for

Chino Hills, and it's really cool to be able to work with

him. Overall Concerts in the Parks is a big part of our

summer that CHHS Key Club is proud to be a part of.

Concerts In the Park

This summer we decided to cool down a bit from the hot weather and reminisce the times of Win-ter. These audacious Californian Key Clubbers took up the task of raising money for PTP through Ice Skating! Chino Hills High School Key club hosted this event and invited near-ly 100 people from all divisions to partake in this event. Ultimately raising over 250 dollars in just 2 hours. Beating the heat and beat out Pediatric Trauma!

ATTENTION INCOMING FRESHMAN THIS PAGE IS

DETICATED TO YOU!!!

What is Key Club? Key Club is a Kiwanis International High School Program. Key Club assists the Kiwanis Family

in helping the children of the world through service projects such as fundraisers, food drives, and

park clean-ups. Members of Key Club also benefit from these projects by developing leadership

skills through planning events and running meetings. The core values of this club are leadership,

character building, caring, and inclusiveness. Our hope is that all members of Key Club can devel-

op these same values. Key Club International’s focus is on the youth of the world and our Major Em-

phasis is “Children: Their Future, Our Focus” Key Club gives high school students to make in impact

in their community, nation and around the world.

Key Club was founded in 1925 in Sacramento, California with only 11 members. The idea of

Key Club was developed by Albert C. Olney and Frank C. Vincent, Kiwanis members who were al-

so high school administrators . They entertained the idea of starting a junior club for high school stu-

dents at their own Kiwanis Club. The club began as a group of key boys in a school, willing to serve

others. Thus the group was deemed Key Club. Over time, Key Club expanded and is now the larg-

est and oldest service program for high school students. It has more than 250,000 members in 5,000

clubs in 30 countries.

FACTS!

Key Club started as a boys-only club!

Girls were allowed in Key Club in 1977, and the first female president was elected in 1991.

Key Club members complete over 12 million service hours every year.

Chino Hills High School is part of the CNH district consisting of 69 divisions in California, Nevada,

and Hawaii.

The CNH district currently has over 500 clubs with nearly 45,500 members!

Brad Pitt was in Key Club when he was in high school. So was Tom Cruise, Ricki Lake, Bill Clinton,

Elvis Presley, James Van Der Beek, Alan Jackson, and Steve Young.

CHHS KEYCLUBBERS! I am so very excited for another year of Key Club. I

guarantee you this year will be a BLAST full of enthusiasm for service. This year,

our service events will focus mainly on 3 projects, PTP (Pediatric Trauma Project),

Project JumpStart, and the Project EliMiNaTe. Before going any further with our

Key Club spirit, let’s briefly take a look on the “Big 3”.

CNH Kiwanis first established the Pediatric Trauma Project (PTP) in 1994, and

since then, it became our main focus in service. Pediatric Trauma deals with un-

intentional injuries of children under the age of 14. These unintentional injuries

can include car accidents, playground accidents, and brain injuries. But why is

this trauma so important? Till today, Pediatric Trauma remains the #1 cause for

deaths in children. Every year, about $157 billion is spent to treat these injuries.

However, the most shocking fact about Pediatric Trauma is that more than 90%

of these injuries can be prevented! Now how can we Key Clubbers support PTP?

Last year, Key Club and the Kiwanis Family have raised a great amount of mon-

ey by donating car-seats, holding car washes, and doing multiple fundraisers.

We can continue to prevent these causes by helping at local hospitals, prepar-

ing new first aid equipment, and adopting a family/school to help.

“Making a difference one baby step at a time.” Project Jumpstart, our dis-

trict project of 2012-2014, focuses mainly on children 0-5. As many should know,

the age from 0-5 is the most crucial time of life. Project Jumpstart will help create

new opportunities for infants to get them started on the way to a successful life.

Throughout the next 2 years, Key Club will be helping infants not just locally, but

WORLDWIDE!!!

The EliMiNaTe Project‘s focus is to prevent mothers and their children from

MNT, also known as Maternal Neonatal Tetanus. MNT is passed through umbilical

cords from the mother to her child during delivery. Unsafe delivery practices can

cause MNT; however, this disease is 100% preventable. Our goal from this year to

2015 is to raise $110,000,000 for the EliMiNaTe Project and “eliminate” MNT from

36 places of India. Please keep in mind that only $1.80 for vaccinations is need-

ed to save a life of a newborn and its mother! If you are eager to learn more

about the “Big 3” and other projects of CNH Key Club, please visit the CNH-

KeyClub page linked www.cnhkeyclub.org

Meet the Vice President

Meet the Secretary

I am part of our school's Chambers Choir and I play bass

guitar in a band. Moreover, I want to be involved in the

medical field in the future because I feel that I can work

in something I thoroughly enjoy while having to wear V-

necks for the rest of my life! The most important part of

Key Club to me is the friendships I make! Whether if it's at

a short, simple event or an officer meeting, I feel closer to

the people I work with. This is why I want to focus on fun

socials as well as the events that allow our members to

get to know each other better in the upcoming year. My

tip: if you want to make a good first impression on someone,

MAKE THEM FOOD!

-Jon Woo
