Lotus spec ially desi gned an assortment of programs fo r students from every age group and abili ty.Whether you are in high school or universi ty student , just beginning your Mandarin studie s,or a (one whointimately understands China) Lotus has an agenda that will suit your learning and travel needs.

The best way to learn a language is to have constantcontact with it in a completely immersive environment.Lotus's programs afford students a unique opportunity tosubmerge themselves in Mandarin by living with aChinese family. We designed Learn Chinese with aHo me st ay programs for those looking for deeperconnections to local Chinese culture, that for instance, you wouldn't find in a sterile hotel or internationaldormitory. Most often our students spend their morningsformally studying in a classroom and then the eveningtesting out their speaking and listening skills with theirfamilies.

In addition to the homestay, our programs often includecultural excursions, extracurriculars, and charityactivities. These extras not only enhance students'understanding of Mandarin, but also serve to educatethem about the profound traditions and current realitiesof China. Lotus steps outside the classroom to givestudents a well rounded more complete picture of Chinaand its standard language.

Lotus guarantees you will return from China with notonly increased language proficiency but a more intimatecomprehens ion of China and its people. After your stayyou will have made last ing connect ions with a peop le thatboast thousands of yea rs of history. Let Lot us be yourguide and start your adventure today!

When it comes down to it, it's all about language immersion. If

you've come to China to study Mandarin, Lotus's Learn Chinesewith a Homestay programs are the best option. Unlike a lot ofother study abroad organizat ions, Lotus is not an islandprogram in whi ch st udents live with a fixed group of foreigne rswho often also speak English. Rather, Lotus strives to immerseits students in a living environment that constantly requires themto speak, listen, read and write Mandarin. In fact, we believe sostrongly in the benefit s of liv ing with a homestay that it 's the onlyliving option we offer t o our students. We place al l our students inhomestay families that know you are there to speak Chinese andare ready to help with anything from homework assignments todecoding Chinese proverbs.

As a fully integrated family member you will participate inthe daily ins and outs of Chinese living including eating mealstogether, watching TV, and bargain shopping. Important to note, though you are living with another family, you still will enjoy thecomforts of your own private bedroom.

To ensure you have a safe and positive experience, beforeallowing a family to host foreigners, Lotus conducts a thoroughinterview and security check. Our hosts are particularly excitedand welcoming toward foreigners. Should you have anyquestions or concerns, don't hesitate to ask your family! That'swhat they are there for. They welcome questions from curiousstudents and travele rs. Our Beijing staff will also be available atall times to assist you if necessary.

The distingu ishing characterist ic of our college program is the homestay accomodation. Unlike a lot of other

island study programs in which university students live with other students who often also speak English, our

program includes study at Be ij ing Language and Culture Universi ty , Be ij ing Normal Universi ty , or the

universi ty of your choice, and a homestay arr angement. All of our student s reap the benefits of going home

and practi cing what they learn in class during the day. We find thei r progress to be particularly fas t in this

    total immersion setting.

Want to combine your need to study with your desire to travel? Lotus created a

program in which students study and live with a host family for their first mon th inBeijing and then spend the last one or two weeks travel ing. While study ing, student swill live with one of our host families. During the final two weeks of the programstudents get to put their Mandarin skills to the test as we take them on a tour of Xian andChengdu. We end the trip with a voluntee r excursion at the destination of the student s'choice. Some choose to head to an orphanage in Tibet while others take advantage ofour recent ly added option in S ichuan teaching English at rebuilt schools .

My son did not speak nor wri te any Chinese before he came to China. His

tutor was able to start him from ground zero. When he returned from only a

month away he could converse and comprehend in very basic Mandarin,

which I think is phenomenal progress. Plus, at the end of the program, the

tutor provided us with a detail study report with a description of the study

plan, progress , and areas for improvement . We chose Learn Chi nese With A

Homestay because we wanted a safe, worry- free env ironment especially

since he had never been to China before . The hos t mot her took rea lly good

care of him. Throughout the program duration, I kep t in constant contact with

the Lotus office in Beijing via email asking any question or concern that

popped into my head. With the time difference, they always re sponded within

24 hours. Thi s really eased the mother i n me. I would recommend the Lotusprogram if you are seeking an enr iching cul tural experi ence with ful l

language immersion . We will not hesitate to part icipate again in the future.

Xieqing Charity Orphan School is a private school situated on a

beautiful gra ssland in Ganzi Tibet an Autonomous Prefect ure in

Sichuan province, southwest China. As a sponsor of the orphanage,

Lotus arranges trips for students interested in volunteer teaching.

The orphans are extremely grateful and excited to make foreignfriends and get a glimpse of the world outside their own. Lotus

for this journey. For more detail s, please consult our website.

    Charity Bake Sale Fundraising

Lotus students and host families participate in a great deal of

charity fundraisers. For example in accordance with the Dragon

Boat Festival, Lotus joined in with well known charity

organiza tions to make and sell Zongzi (bamboo leaf-wrapped

rice dish) to raise money for less fortunate students in rural areasof China. Lotus also made Niangao during the Chinese New

Year to build water cellars for impoverished communities in

customary holiday treats, we expose our students to current

troubles facing many Chinese. We find everyone, volunteers

Each semester we organize a volunteer trip toHe Bei Lang Fan

Yang Shui Wu Xiang Senior Center in the suburbs of Beijing.Lotus arranges this excursion with two objectives in mind.First, we hope to widen the world perspectives of our studentsby giving them a glimpse of how others live. Second, we hope topromote the Confucian ideal of (xiao dao) or filial piety;that is to be dutiful to one's parents and treat elderly peoplewith respec t. This value is ingrained in Chinese cul ture.

Lotus Educational Foundation has given students the opportunity to t ru ly see the way other peoplelive and thus expand their minds and increase understanding. They have done this through providinghomestay families as well as charity excursions to places such as senior homes and orphanages.

Part ic ipat ing in both kinds of activi ties is st il l a rari ty in China. The majori ty of fore igners vis it ingChina are wealthy tourists who will never get a taste of the real, nitty-grittiness of China, or foreign

students who all too easi ly get sucked in to a comfortable li festyle of l iv ing in dorms or apartments ,going to class occasional ly, and eating and partying for scarily low prices. They may leave Chinaafter one year without ever si tting down to eat dinner with a Chinese family or gaining an awarenessof how both government and non-governmental organizations are addressing poverty issues that still

pose a signif icant obs tacle to the country 's ri se in to the class of developed nations. I par ticipated intwo charity events in nearby Hebei province through the Lotus program. One event was to a seniorhome, and was specifically open to all students in the Lotus program. The other event was to a

children's orphanage. Both volunteer experiences impressed me deeply. I really encourage currentand futur e Lotus s tudents to make the most out of t heir time in China and to value any oppor tunities tounderstand Chinese people on a deeper level. -Stephanie Lin, from Columbia Universi ty , joined

Isaac Harle y, from Unive rsity of Oklahoma, joined Lotus's 5-Week Winter Program at BLCUin 2004.

I had a great time studying the Chinese language and culture in Beijing at BLCU during the winterof 2004. The Lotus staff in Beijing helped immensely, as they placed me with a wonderful familyand periodically checked in and out with me to make sure everything was going smoothly, andhandled det ails (such as arrang ing rides to/from the air port, enrolling me in my classes , showing mehow to commute to the University) that would have left me, as a near absolute beginner in Chinesetotally lost. I went to Beijing knowing only a few indispensable phrases in Chinese, and I left beingable to have simple conversations.

Whitney Sw edlow, from Florida State Unive rsity, joined Lotu s's 5-Week One-O n-One Program in the Fall of 2007.

My time with the Lotus Educational Foundation study abroad program in Beijing was outstanding. From the minute Iarrived to the minute I left, Lotus was there to assist and to answer any question I could imagine. My host family wasfantast ic. I had a 24-year -old host sister (Xu Wei) who was s tudying English, and she made it her personal goal to act as mydictionary, tutor, and translator throughout my stay. Xu Wei took the initiative to introduce me to all of her friends andfamily , and before long I had not one Chinese mom, but four! By the time I left China, my Chinese famili es called me "sar"(Third Child with a Beijing accent) and I called them "Mama" and "Baba." They took me to eat family meals, see amazingand important sites, taught me to play Mah-jong, and allowed me to spend time with them and practice my Mandarin. Itwas very difficult to leave. I had to make many promises to return in the future.

Zoe Quan , from Harvard Univer sity joined Lo tus's 4-Week Summer Program at BLCU in 2003.

Thanks to Lotus, my Chinese has improved significantly, in ways that would not otherwise have been possible. Yourprogram not only accelerated my learning of the language by constant exposure to its use in day -to-day living, but alsogave me a much better understanding of the rapid changes that are now occurring in contemporary Chinese culture. Iappreciated your willingness to accommodate my schedule, your arranging for tutors geared towards my specific business

needs. Your in-country support helped me to concentrate on the work at hand, with minimal lo ss of time spent on attendingto administrative and logistical matters. I whole-heartedly recommend your offering to others who wish to learn andunderstand Chinese through immersion.

Richard Hickey, from York Un iversity, UK, joined L otus's 8-Week Program i n 2005.

Would I recommend living with a homestay? Definitely. Compared with friends who stayed in dorms at BLCU with otherinternational students, my Chinese improved more. Plus, there is far more incentive to learn if you can practice every day.My fami ly was extremely ni ce. The food was tasty, and it was good to see what realBei jingers eat every day. They were allremarkably patient with my faltering Chinese. The flat was comfortable and located close to BLCU. They even lent me abicyc le, which I came to love riding.

Amanda Wong, from the University of California, Berkl ey, joined Lotus' s 4-Week BLC U Summer Program in 2006.

My host family was excellent. They made me feel at home right away. I feel that it would have been difficult for me to getthe whole immersion experience by only taking classes at BLCU, as the foreign students normally use their own language

once class gets out. But by having a host family to come home to every night, direct application of the lessons learned inclass was immediately available.

Also , whe n Iwould ask help with any thing they would always tell me not to worry. Ms . Ting's moth eralso came and stayed with us for the duration of my stay. She was quite possibly thecutest woman ever! She was an incredible cook too. I cannot say enough about howhelpful a nd welcomin g they were. They weren't picky about when I came home (I had myown set of keys) and would simply ask things for informational purposes. I had abea uti ful room, and access to the phone and the int ernet . I was forced tocommunicate with people that couldn't communicate with me in my own language, so itwas great- the best way to learn. Also I have to say my tutor was great, she was veryfriendly and spoke English. She helped me with everythin g. I highly r ecommend Lotus.

Their hospitality, the timethey devoted to helping me, and the family feeling they created at their home made thedifference.
