The ongoing response to this question in China is to protect the citizens and government.

Do you think that this protects citizens?

China will not be able to prosper as a global superpower because the Chinese government does not give the Chinese citizens the freedom they need to develop intellectually.

Goes on to prove that China may be able to prosper temporarily but the benefits will not last.

Conclusion, no censorship policies have ever led to a prosperous country, because it does not evoke trust or freedom .
