Clouds in China

ALIYUN

• Lots of very small companie

• Separate cloud for financial / secure systems

• Good security scanning service

• Avoid SQL Injection, etc.

Clouds in China

AWS• Largest global player

• Best features, by far (not all in China)

• Sets global standards (API, etc.)

• Chinese cloud separate from global system

• Use AWS, easy to expand outside China

• Invite/Beta only for now, getting easier to access

• More expensive than others

WHAT ABOUT PRIVATE CLOUDS?

• Small, but becoming more common

• ChinaNetCloud building since 2008

• Small ones are base Xen-based

• Now going to OpenStack

• United Stack is key local player

KEY CLOUD CHALLENGES IN CHINA

• Pre-Pay vs. Post-Pay

• Technology & Feature Limits

• Security Concerns

• Reliability Worries

• Bandwidth Buying

Page 28: ChinaNetCloud - Public Clouds in China Overview

Clouds in China

PRE-PAY

• Domestic clouds lack post-pay billing

• Rely on pre-pay, much like a mobile phone

• Hard to estimate costs for on-demand services

• Running out of funds means abrupt service cut-off

Page 29: ChinaNetCloud - Public Clouds in China Overview

TECHNOLOGY & FEATURE LIMITS

• Clouds are not as easy as they look to build

• AWS makes it look easy, but it’s hard

• Local clouds are too basic to compete internationally

• Especially lack of IO – block storage & performance

• Limited number of disk images, options, markets

• Very few 3rd party service providers and cloud skills

• Reliability still a problem

Page 30: ChinaNetCloud - Public Clouds in China Overview

SECURITY

• Chinese Clouds have good security so far

• Some have better tools than others

• Simple systems, usually root users & passwords

• Cloud firewall protection – very basic

• Additional security scanning in some cases

Page 31: ChinaNetCloud - Public Clouds in China Overview

Clouds in China

BANDWIDTH

• Port speed provisioning with prepayment

• Common in China IDCs, but complex in cloud

• Some cloud per-server bandwidth complicates things

• Most cloud bandwidth quality pretty good

• CDN still usually a good idea
