Short Term effects (Cont’d)

1966 Cultural Revolution, in an attempt to instill revolutionary fervor into the coming generation of Chinese people to prevent stagnation seen in the USSR, as well as to bring the end of the Four Olds.

Long Term Effects As PRC and USSR split, relations

between the US and China improved.

Nixon thought it would be beneficial to be in good relations with China, for the fight against communism and against the USSR would improve.

The increasing development of relations led to the US adding the PRC to the UN in 1971, where they remain today, along with being one of the Veto nations.

The Nationalists based in Taiwan claimed they were the only legal Chinese Authority and were expelled from the UN .

The relations with both the US and USSR have paved the way for modern-day China.

China adopted somewhat capitalist principles

There are more and more private entrepreneurs in China today.

China is one of the world’s rapidly developing nations.

Still maintains some aspects of Communism: It is still run by the CPC (Communist Party of China), a single-party state.
