More than $3 million of jew-elry was stolen last weekfrom a rented Mustang

parked at the Cottonwood Mall inChilliwack, according to an indus-try watchdog.

The RCMP issued a release ear-lier this week on the theft, butwould only saythat an “undis-closed substan-tial” amount ofjewelry was tak-en from the caron Aug. 30.

But accordingto Jewellers Vigi-l a n c e C a n a d a(JVC), 708 pieces of jewelry worthmore than $3.3 million were sto-len.

JVC says the pieces were eitherdiamond rings or loose diamondsand were stored in bags located inthe car’s trunk. They were beingtransported by two security guardsfrom Langley to Kamloops.

According to JVC, “Forensicexamination determined the driv-er’s door lock had been punched”and the thieves used the trunkrelease in the interior of the car toget at the jewelry.

While Mounties have obtainedvideo surveillance, JVC says nosuspects have been identified.

After more than half a cen-tury of operation, one ofthe Chilliwack area’s old-est golf courses will close

up shop this fall.Citing a struggling golf industry,

Aquadel Golf Course owners Dickand Wendy Whitlam have sold theAquadel property to a developer.

The Whitlams—who have ownedand managed the course for 35years—will retire but continue liv-ing nearby. The developer, mean-while, intends to build homes onthe property. (For related story, seepage 3.)

For DickWhitlam, the impendingclosure of the course is bittersweet,given his family’s long history atAquadel.

Saying goodbye, he said, “is verytough. Something like this that’sbeen in your family that long, andsomething that Wendy and I havedone a lot of improvements on overthe years, it becomes part of you.

“It’s a very tough decision,” hecontinued. “We had hoped thatsomeone would buy it as a golfcourse, but in the last 10 years, golfin general has been a tough one,financially, and this golf course inparticular has been one of the oneshard hit by the recession and com-petition.”

Whitlam’s father bought the firstproperty at the site in 1954. He

opened a campsite in 1958 andadded a nine-hole golf course twoyears later in 1960.

“It was really rough,” said Whit-lam of Aquadel’s early days. “It wasa camper’s golf course, somethingto do. He was just trying to get itgoing with no money.”

But the area grew, the publicseemed to like the course and, in1965, the Burnaby-based Whitlamsmoved to Lindell Beach. In 1973,the family redeveloped the courseand added nine more holes. Fiveyears later, Dick and Wendy tookover the business. The couple havebeen refining the course ever since.

But recent years have been toughfor Aquadel.

Two decades of development—much of it spurred by the factthat golf courses were, for a time,allowed to be built on property inthe Agricultural Land Reserve—have flooded the golf market.

Drivers, Whitlam noted, “haveto pass a lot of golf courses to gethere. In 1990, we were one of threegolf courses in Chilliwack, andnow there’s nine golf courses in ourarea.”

There hasn’t been a similar risein the number of golfers. In fact,Whitlam said the trend is headedin the opposite direction.

“Golf, in general, has been inthe decline for 10 years,” he said.“This generation that’s coming up

Residents of a Lindell Beach developmentsay they’re worried about high-densitydevelopment replacing Aquadel Golf

Course. But the developer who has bought theproperty says such fears are unfounded.

Donna Hooker, the strata administrator ofthe Cottages of Cultus Lake, says residents ofher development are concerned that high-density housing would be built on what is nowthe golf course.

With a new Official Community Plan in theworks for the Fraser Valley Regional District’sArea E, Hooker says she’s worried the newdocument will allow for more intense develop-ment than the area can handle.

But while Hooker says residents have beenshown proposals that would see four-plexunits built on the golf course property, thedeveloper who bought Aquadel says that’s notthe case.

Larry Les, of Genica Developments, toldthe Times his company is looking at build-ing around 150 single-family homes on theproperty.

“People shouldn’t be afraid of what’s com-ing,” he said. “If we do any townhomes at all itwill be to keep the footprint smaller on the siteso there can be more open amenity areas.”

Told of the plan, Hooker said, “that’s defi-nitely a change from the plan that they havepresented in the past. They certainly haven’tpresented that in any public way to the com-munity. And the changes in the OCP wouldnot require them to do so, which is what ourmain concern is.”

Hooker accepts that some growth will hap-pen, but she says she doesn’t want to see high-density developments in the area. She alsosaid residents would like to see an emphasison green space on the property

“What would be the most welcome would besome way of retaining some green space, somepublic community space, because that’s one ofthe things we’re concerned about; maintainingthe golf course, for example, or even a smallerversion of a golf course.”

But Les said that’s not going to happenbecause the golf course is no longer a viablebusiness.

“If it was, Dick [Whitlam] would have con-tinued it.”

“You get to that age,” Dick said, “I’ve gotover 40 years in here and it’s time for me toretire and Wendy to retire.”

With the NDP lookingmore and more likelyto form B.C.’s next gov-ernment, some Chilli-

wack River Valley residents thinkit’s time to put more teeth into theirOfficial Community Plan.

A draft of the Fraser Valley Region-al District’s new Electoral Area Eplan, which has been two years indevelopment, was unveiled at pub-lic information meetings in CultusLake and the Chilliwack River Valleylast week.

Replacing the current Official Set-tlement Plan, last updated in 1994,the OCP is intended to provide anup-to-date vision that reflects com-

munity values and current legisla-tion.

But Glen Thompson, a spokesper-son with the Friends of the Chilli-wack River Valley, said it doesn’t.

“Right now everything’s slantedin favour of industry,” he told theTimes.

“You can mine there, you can cutlogs there, you can run big trucksthrough there. We’d like to changethat so the green economy is pre-ferred over industrialization.”

Residents’ concerns about devel-

opment and the environment fea-ture prominently in the 200-pagedocument, which will be presentedat a public hearing Wednesday atthe FVRD office, but the wording is“vague,” according to Thompson.

When it comes to logging, forexample, Thompson would like tosee the OCP use the exact wordingof the Forest Range Practices Actto express residents’ opposition tothe land-use designation currentlyassigned to much of the valley’sCrown land.

But since that would put the OCPin opposition to the provincial gov-ernment, Thompson (who sat onone of two committees that helpeddraft the plan) said that hasn’t hap-pened.

“Or ig inal ly, when ever yonethought the Liberals would be inforever, there was a lot of talk aboutbeing very careful about what wesay because [the plan] could berejected,” he said.

But with the possibility of theNDP forming the next government,he said some residents think it’stime to press the point.

“I think a lot of the activists arethinking, ‘Well, now’s our chanceto not be so timid and actually be

Mounties have called in a sketch art-ist after they say a middle-agedman exposed himself to

two young girls playing at McCam-mon elementary school Saturday.

Two 10-year-old girls were play-ing on the school grounds around1:30 p.m. Saturday when a manapproached them, exposed his geni-tals and began touching himself infront of the children.

The man left the scene on a blackbicycle.

The case is obviously disturbing and con-

cerning for police, RCMP spokespersonConst. Tracy Wolbeck said.

“It was the middle of the day on a brightand sunny day, and the suspect was notdeterred by the thought of an adult seeinghis actions.”

The man was described as being white,in his forties, with grey hair and a short greybeard. He wore a blue T-shirt and black

pants.The girls and their families have

been offered assistance by RCMPVictim Services, Wolbeck said. Policehave also enlisted an artist to try andcompose a composite sketch of thesuspect. No image has been releasedyet.◗ Anyone with information on theincident is asked to contact the

Highway crash as Billy James (BJ)Amey, of Chilliwack.

Amey, 25, was killed when his carwent off the Coquihalla Highwaynear the Great Bear Snowshed onSept. 3.

Police say the vehicle was travelling at a

high rate of speed when it left theroad, went down a steep embank-ment, collided with several treesand caught fire.

Amey was pronounced dead atthe scene.

Police say “excessive speed” likelyplayed a factor in the crash. TheRCMP and the Coroners Service

continue to investigate.

In just one and a half years,the Tiny Light Foundationhas become greater than

the sum of its parts.The Chilliwack-based non-

profit offers free professionalphotography sessions to fami-lies with children who’ve hadlife-altering medical diagnoses.

It began in December 2011by bringing joy to a handfulof overwhelmed parents whowouldn’t otherwise have hadthe time or energy to capturememories on film in the midstof coming to terms with theirkids’ life-threatening diagno-ses or lifelong disabilities.

Today, however, the storiesand photos of the 221 “TinyLights” posted on the founda-tion’s website go beyond theindividual stories and createa bigger tapestry of hope andcourage that could inspireanyone.

“I knew there was a needout there,” Tiny Light found-er Melissa DePape told theTimes. “I knew that it wouldtake off but don’t think I really

knew the magnitude, how itwould spread.”

To date the foundationhas received more than 500applications and secured anetwork of photographersfrom coast to coast to volun-teer their time for the photosessions. To fund the growingdemand, Tiny Light hosts itsfirst fundraiser in Chilliwackthis month: a red carpet galaat the Coast Hotel Sept. 21

Dubbed the 1st AnnualLights, Camera, Shine Fund-raiser Gala Dinner, the eventwill feature a keynote addressby Global BC reporters ElaineYong and Aaron McArthur,two parents who know first-hand how valuable the serviceTiny Light provides is.

Last year, three weeks afterthe birth of their healthy babygirl Addison, an emergencyvisit to Burnaby Generalrevealed her heart was failing,and doctors told the coupleshe might not make it.

Through a series of whatYong has called“little miracles,”Addison eventually becamethe first pediatric heart trans-plant recipient in B.C.

After countless hours inthe pediatric intensive careunit at BC Children’s Hospital,Yong said she had all the post-ers on the bulletin board therememorized.

“There was one that alwayscaught my attention andI must have read it severaldozen times,” she wrote in aJuly 2011 blog post. “It was forThe Tiny Light Foundation...I looked at the website a fewtimes while we were in thehospital, and got teary eyed atthe beautiful pictures and sto-ries of all the Tiny Lights andtheir medical struggles.”

Yong, McArthur and Addi-son had their session last July,and Yong has since volun-teered to take charge of thefoundation’s writing depart-ment, responsible for writ-ing and editing the stories ofevery Tiny Light.

The head of the local NDP’s candidatesearch committee says ChilliwackMLA John Les’s decision not to seek

re-election should help the NDP’s chancescome next spring.

“It’s always hard to knock off an incum-bent,” Al Ens told the Times last week. “Ithink, for our party, it’s probably positivenews.

“Once that settles in with people, peoplemay think—as they sort of did when Pennerdid earlier this year—that to some degree itopens the door for us.”

Combine Les’s departure with provincialpolls that show an unpopular BC Liberal

government, and Ens said “we can’t help butfeel pretty buoyant and upbeat.”

Les’s resignation hasn’t led to aspiringNDP candidates coming out of the wood-work over the last week, Ens said. But he saidthree “quality” candidates had already indi-cated they’d like to run.

One of those is FVRD Area D directorDennis Adamson. The others haven’t beenannounced yet.

Ens said NDP candidate Gwen O’Mahony’svictory in this spring’s Chilliwack-Hope bye-lection may have helped encourage candi-dates to run in Les’s neighbouring Chilliwackriding, which has been a long-time BC Lib-eral stronghold.

“There’s genuine interest in people run-ning for the NDP now that might not havealways been there,” he said.

“With Gwen’s win in the byelection thisspring we’re feeling pretty buoyant and pret-ty optimistic of our chances of retaining notonly Gwen’s seat in the next provincial elec-tion, but maybe making a breakthrough inthe Chilliwack riding.”

It sounds like a real apology,but it’s not. The speaker isn’t sorryfor anything he did, or said, orimplied. That thing he said aboutminorities, women, rape victims,the handicapped? He’s not sorryfor saying it. He’s not even sorryfor offending you, or anyone else.He’s just sort of generally sorrythat someone, somewhere, mayhave felt bad. Which may or maynot have anything to do with thebile that spewed from the speak-er’s mouth.◗ “I don’t mean to sound racist,but . . . .”

Anything said after this phraseis completely racist.

When the guy in the nextcubicle breaks this one out, youcan respond in one of three ways.You can give a reasoned responseabout the insidious nature ofprejudice. You can tell him to takehis opinions about Asian driversand cram them. Or you can givehim an open-palm slap to the ear.

We can’t really recommend thelatter, no matter how satisfying itmight be.◗ “Won’t someone think of thechildren?”

This statement itself is nowusually camouflaged behindanother euphemism, but it wasnever really about the childrenin the first place. It’s always beenabout the desire of prudes andreligious bigots to force the rest ofus to live in their cloistered world.

The idea that almost anythingmight harm children, and thatany kind of censorship is justifiedto protect their wee, innocentbrains, suggests that the speakeris both paranoid and has neveractually met or even been a child.

If allowed to run riot, this view-point would lead to the banningof all video games other than Tet-ris, and the exclusion of the word“nipple” from the dictionary.◗ “I’m retiring to spend more timewith my family.”

An oldie, but a goodie. Betterthan most of the others, becauseit’s always partly true.

What politician wouldn’t longto give up the long hours of legis-lating, lobbying, and scrumming

with grubby reporters, to sleepin, see their kids, and eat meals athome?

Of course, if the politician reallywanted to spend lots of time withthe family, they wouldn’t havegotten into the game in the firstplace.

This phrase is usually coveringfor one of the following:

“Oh, cripes, we are going tolose so bad in the next election,and I’m not going down with thisship.”

“My affair with a Brazilianwhipped cream model is about tobe on the front pages.”

“Apparently, I didn’t do as gooda job hiding that money in Swissbank accounts as I thought.”◗ “I hear what you’re saying.”

A favourite from the world ofmiddle-management, guaran-teed to inflame tensions whileattempting to defuse them.

Direct translation: “I am not lis-tening to you, but I am pretend-ing to do so, as a managementmanual told me this will make itless likely that you will steal allthe toner and pens in the officeafter you are cut loose in the nextround of layoffs.”◗ “Children are our most valuableresource.”

If that was really true, therewould be a tax break for grind-ing them into a fine powder forexport to China and the U.S.

has a “fire in his belly” for the coming elec-tion, and he’ll be running against the NDPcome hell or high water.

Speaking of high water, each day bringsa new wave to break against the embattledgovernment of Premier Christy Clark.

Kevin Falcon, Chilliwack’s John Les, BlairLekstrom, George Abbott, Mary McNeil,Joan McIntyre, Rob Howard. Since lastweek, all of those Liberal MLAs, severalof them senior current or former cabinetministers, have announced that they willnot be running come this fall. It leavesColeman part of a dwindling crowd ofsenior Liberal veterans.

Coleman, Mike de Jong, and ShirleyBond seem to be among the last long-serving Liberals who have held majorportfolios.

It’s hard to blame those getting out now.This is British Columbia, after all, wherewe don’t just change governments, wechase them from office, pitchforks andtorches an optional extra. Ask Bill VanderZalm or Glen Clark.

Considering the latest polls, showingthe NDP and opposition leader AdrianDix well above Clark and her dwindlingLiberal core, it seems we may very well beheading for a repeat of 2001, or of 1991.

But again, we have to say that this isBritish Columbia. Nothing in politics ispredictable west of the Rockies.

Coleman may be counting on the sim-mering discontent that seems to be bub-bling within the upstart B.C. ConservativeParty. Or he may simply believe that theNDP will do what they have so often doneon both national and provincial stages,and snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Or he may feel that he has one of the lastsafe Liberal seats in B.C., and someonehas to pick up the pieces after next spring’selection blowout.

Editor:On Aug. 17 I left for a week’s vaca-

tion secure in the knowledge thatthe city staff report for the nextcouncil meeting recommendedthat ‘council direct staff to developa business plan for the remediation,restoration and long term manage-ment of the Paramount Theatrebuilding as a civic facility.’ “Finally,”I thought, “they’ve seen the lightdown at city hall and figured outthat this one-of-a kind building isworth saving and incorporating intothe much-vaunted “grand plan” forthe revitalization of the downtown.

Knowing that staff works hand inhand with council prior to those rec-ommendations ever being made, Iset out to pen a few thank you lettersto mayor and council for doing theright thing. Imagine my shock whenI checked my emails the followingWednesday and learned that councilrejected staffs’ recommendationand moved to proceed with thedemolition of the theatre.

The RFP process set up originallyto find a user was flawed from thestart as the city wanted the pro-ponent to put up all the money torestore the building without grant-ing ownership—no business personin their right mind would take adeal like that. The proposal put outby our group (The Chilliwack Para-mount Film Society) was sound,but slated for rejection based on thecriteria in that RFP. It did, however,provide for a legitimate alternativeto move ahead to the benefit ofeveryone including the city. All ofthis was rejected and now the rushis on to bring down the buildingquickly before any more oppositioncan be mounted to stop the process.

Unfortunately a number of mythshave been propagated surroundingthe Paramount that serve to muddythe waters and leave the citizens ofChilliwack with a skewed perspec-tive of what is required to revitalizethe downtown. I’d like to set therecord straight and tackle a few ofthem as a start so that Chilliwacktaxpayers get the full and informedpicture of what’s happening here:

Myth #1 - CEPCO has offered totake the building down for free.

Let’s clear this one up once andfor all. CEPCO equals the City ofChilliwack and vice versa . . . period.It’s the same pot of money that everytaxpayer has funded. Taking downthe Paramount will roughly cost thesame amount as totally refurbishingthe building and giving it and thedowntown core desperately needednew life. If the City insists on mak-ing a distinction between itself andCEPCO for the sake of this argu-ment then so be it. Sell the buildingto CEPCO, then, for $1 along withthe recommendation that City staffcame up with to restore the buildingand run it as civic facility. For thesame taxpayer dollars spent (and yesthey are taxpayer dollars) the publiccan have a choice—walk to a newlyminted theatre in the downtown foran evening out or walk by an emptygravel lot for the next 20 years.

Myth #2 - The building is beyondrepair.

This one really gets me. The term“condemned” has been bandiedabout and the public needs to knowthat in this case we’re not evenclose. Part of my job as an architect

is to review existing buildings anddetermine very specifically what isrequired to bring them up to cur-rent building code requirements.I’ve spent significant time over thelast months looking through theParamount with contractors, tradespeople and engineers and basedon this review I don’t see any showstoppers—only opportunities. Themechanical hvac distribution sys-tem is sound and with new roof topunits installed will function beauti-fully. The so-called “extensive wirethief damage” that occurred isn’tvery extensive at all (according tothe electrician) and can be repairedwith little cost and effort. The build-ing is structurally sound and remov-ing the old second floor installedin the ’70s to turn it back into theoriginal single two-level theatreactually improves the overall seismicperformance of the building.

Restoring this facility is not unlikethe work we did turning the old firehall into our new offices some yearsago. Both these buildings are of thesame vintage, construction type andwere originally in similar states ofrepair (in fact the fire hall was worseoff). There may be some that thinkour efforts were wasted and that thedowntown would have been betterserved with the eight extra parkingstalls that were originally slated toreplace our building. I haven’t metany of those people however—onlythose that appreciate what wedid and are happy to see one ofChilliwack’s more significant build-ings given a new life instead of beingdemolished. Bottom line is: restor-ing the Paramount to the same levelas our ‘fire hall’ is a straightforwardproposition and could be completedat a fraction of the cost of new con-struction.

Myth #3 - The Paramount The-atre would compete with Galaxyand Cottonwood Cinemas as wellas the Cultural Centre.

The proposal of The ChilliwackParamount Film Society includeda plan to transform the Paramountinto a single-screen, repertory-typetheatre offering 600 seats for patronsto screen vintage, independent,alternative or non-mainstreamfilms. The films being shown at theGalaxy Cinemas and CottonwoodCinemas are mainly first-run, main-stream Hollywood blockbusters.Galaxy Cinemas at Eagle Landinghas Ultra AVX digital and 3D projec-tion in eight massive theatres withstadium seating, and CottonwoodCinemas is converting two theatresto digital projection and sound inthe near future. Not only are thefilms shown at the Cottonwood andGalaxy vastly different than thosethat would be shown at the Para-mount, differences in the method ofprojection and sound provide two

totally distinct viewing experiences.In addition, a repertory theatre likethe Paramount Theatre caters to adifferent demographic than a largemultiplex chain theatre does, andwould also draw customers fromoutlying areas due to the uniquenature of the films shown and theintimate experience created byviewing them in the context of arestored deco-era cinema. TheParamount Theatre would shownon-mainstream films in a uniquevintage atmosphere, to a varieddemographic . . . this does notcompete with the other theatresin Chilliwack, but rather comple-ments the offerings available to localmovie-goers.

The Paramount Theatre willnot compete with the ChilliwackCultural Centre.When creating theproposal to restore and operate theParamount Theatre, the commit-tee was sensitive to the fact thatChilliwack already has a success-ful and growing Cultural Centre.The restored Paramount Theatredoes not have a stage, dressingrooms, lighting, or sound systemsneeded to host live theatre or musi-cal performances. The ChilliwackParamount Film Society did notwant to replicate the mandate ofthe Cultural Centre, but ratherproposed to restore the ParamountTheatre and use it as it was originallydesigned—to screen movies. It wasproposed to rent the Paramount tocommunity and church groups tohelp supplement the general oper-ating expenses of the movie theatre,but these rentals would not com-pete with City-owned venues thatare capable of hosting live theatreand concerts.

Myth #4 - Demolish it and theywill come.

This is potentially the single mostdamaging issue facing the rehabili-tation of the downtown core. If notdone carefully this will have longstanding consequences. The currentplan for the downtown seems to befor the assembly and “mitigation”of connected properties providinglarge-scale development opportuni-ties for investors. The term “shovelready” is frequently used to describethe practice of taking down build-ings and readying the site for devel-opers to arrive and build upon—andherein lies the danger. Current leaserates in the downtown are gener-ally in the $10 per square foot rangeall-in. A developer needs to obtain alease rate of $18-$22 per square footin order to finance the constructionof a new wood framed building andbetween $30-$40 per square foot fornon-combustible construction (i.e.glass and steel). Lease rates in thedowntown have risen around $2 persquare foot in the last 10 years—itdoesn’t take a degree in rocket sci-

ence to see that these empty lots willsit empty for years or decades beforelease rates in the downtown rise tothe point where developers will beattracted.

Now, I’m not at all against big,bold, large-scale developmentdowntown, I welcome it and in factmy entire profession is built on theidea. The point I’m trying to makeis that the Paramount shouldn’teven be on the hit list of buildingsto come down to make way forfuture development. Any urbanplanner worth their salt would tellyou that a re-furbished Paramounttheatre would only attract futuredevelopment across the street andaugment any kind of mixed-useproject a developer would propose.The downtown is not healthy, andmayor and council seem bent onusing leeches and blood-lettingtechniques to try and save it insteadof giving it the transfusion it sodesperately needs. The City andCEPCO need the advice of experturban planners (please hire one) inthis area to develop a detailed andcomprehensive plan because weonly get one shot at this.With EagleLanding/Garrison and theVeddercorridor areas all vying for a piece ofthe economic pie in our area, only acertain amount of energy is left overto truly “re-vitalize” the downtowncore. If not done carefully, we arelikely to see for many years to comeempty gravel lots scattered over thedowntown core with yesterdays’newspapers blowing lazy circles inthe wind.

Oil pipeline versussheer hypocrisyEditor:

The scene is played out over andover. People in a canoe paddle andprotest about energy pipe lines,and bring along the wannabes.

They drive to the water in theirdiesel trucks, put the canoes backon the diesel truck and drive toTimmies for a take out before theystop in at Walmart. Fill up withcheap diesel and miss paying thetax. It’s cheaper.

The next scene is played out bythe “I don’t know what everyoneelse does for employment group.”They may be still living in theirparent’s basement suite or momand dad help out with their rent,so they can take that cheap flight[planes run on batteries, right ?]to a warm place in the winter andstill make the payment on dasauto. This group thinks they haveenough, so the rest can do without.

We all use the medical system,roads, bridges, flush the toilet, ohya, we truck all out garbage out oftown, it’s cheaper, thus we can usemore stuff.

Gee, I wonder where does allthat pipe come from so I canshower, drink, and flush.

Do those excavators logging andconcrete trucks really run on solarpower?

May I ask that people considerwhat is part of our future for B.C.Yes folks, it’s energy, whether itbe hydro power, power plants orrefinery. These are the engines of

our economy .The best place to start is with

the proposed refinery in NorthernB.C. This will provide a stable fuelsupply for B.C., and allow somefor export. I would never think ofexporting raw crude.

The amount of jobs now and inthe future will be a major factor inour lifestyle.

We are growing and shall providefor needs of our generations.

Consider the above. Let’s getstarted now.

Better uses for taxdollars than parkEditor:

We don’t get it. Spending$152,721 on a park across fromChilliwack City Hall?

As we drive by there we admirethat it is a very pretty little parkand we mostly see pedestrians, cit-izens on bikes and seniors enjoy-ing it. We are seniors. If we want togo and sit in that park where do wepark. In the City Hall parking lot.We don’t have bus service in ourarea.

There are roads in the cityof Chilliwack that need repair-ing badly as we can see by othercitizens asking that their roads berepaired. Not on the agenda todaywas City Hall’s response as oneperson stated in a recent letter tothe editor.

As for the revitalization of down-town Chilliwack, there has to besome sort of plan on the agenda.It is not only the one street in thedowntown area that is an eye sore.What about the old Safeway build-ing?

As for the Paramount Theatre,we also enjoyed many moviesthere and we were very comfort-able sitting upstairs in the last rowand stretching our legs out. Thatwas in the past and now we havea big new movie theatre at EagleLanding that we can’t afford. Wewere sad to see the brand newstate of the Cultural Centre cometo Chilliwack and have the otherlittle arts theatre shut down. Why,because it was cheaper to go andsee a local play and sometimesoutside talent, at a very reasonableprice. We cannot afford the newtheatre productions.

The downtown area should orcould be four-storey buildings ascondos and apartments and thestreet level could be small storesand restaurants with outsidepatios for the spring, summer andautumn months.

We understand that it takes alot of money to have people inter-ested and enthusiastic to do all ofthese things but in our opinion afountain isn’t a big priority for thetaxpayers in Chilliwack.

‘Walks’ winners announced

Helping out Chilliwack’sless fortunate in timefor Thanksgiving will

be a breeze again this yearthanks to the B.C. Thanksgiv-ing Food Drive (BCTFD).

Volunteers will be in neigh-bourhoods around town thisweek dropping off donationbags for residents to fill, butthey won’t be knocking onanyone’s door or interruptinganyone’s dinner.

The bags will be hung fromdoorknobs, and all local resi-dents have to do is fill themand set them out for collec-tion on Saturday.

“That’s the ideal way to doit, and they seem to be ableto marshal the support,” saidChilliwack Salvation Armymedia spokesperson IanPratt of the BCTFD organiz-ers. “They hit every area intown and allow everybody tocontribute. People have theopportunity to contribute ornot to. They don’t get pres-sured into it. They can putinto the bags what they wantto put in there. It’s a great wayto do it.”

Last year, the drive—spon-

sored by The Church of JesusChrist of Latter-day Saintsand Food Banks of BritishColumbia—brought in 12,000pounds of food in Chilliwackthanks to the effort of 250 vol-unteers.

“TheLatterDaySaintscamein and did a tremendousjob,” Pratt said. “It helped usget rolled away through tillChristmas.”

The need at the local foodbank is just as great this year,he said, so the timing of thisweek’s drive couldn’t be better.

“Food Bank usage is up tre-mendously at the moment,”Pratt said.

Thompson said he would also like to seethe OCP include specific wording aboutthe Chilliwack River Valley as a recreationalcorridor with minimal development andresource extraction and a focus on a greenenvironment.

Electoral Area E director Dave Lamson,meanwhile, said conflicts between localresidents and the provincial government arebound to arise because much of the valleyis crown land, owned by the province andmanaged for the good of all British Colum-bians.

The draft OCP tries to strike a balancebetween residents’ wishes and provinciallaws.

“Sometimes things have to be done so thateverything fits together,” Lamson said.

But Thompson said the current draft needs

to go further to express the will of residents.“The language doesn’t clearly indicate the

severity of the issues in the valley,” he said,“and we’d like to address it in there, even if itcan’t trump provincial acts, at least it couldsay the community’s wishes is for safety, agreen economy.”

The provincial govern-ment is asking forpublic feedback on

a new plan that would setaside parcels of old-growthforest around Chilliwack.

The province is proposingto designate 1,479 hectaresof land in the Fraser ValleySouth landscape unit as OldGrowth Management Areas(OGMAs). The designationprotects certain areas fromdevelopment in order topreserve the forest’s biodi-versity.

Proposed OGMAs arelocated to the east of Cul-tus Lake, along Chilliwack’seastern hillsides, and onthe western and northernslopes of Mount Cheam andneighbouring mountains.(Lands in the ChilliwackRiver Valley have alreadygone through the process.)

Many of the proposedareas are composed ofold trees, while others areplaces that may have beenharvested before, but whereforesters hope to estab-

lish pockets of old growth,according to Chilliwack Dis-trict manager Allan John-srude.

“What this is about is try-ing to find good representa-tives of the ecosystems thatare out there [and] that arein good condition, and havethose set aside generallyfor biodiversity purposes,”Johnsrude said. “The prov-ince recognizes the impor-tance of old growth areasof suitable size and suitablequantity that help make upa diverse ecosystem acrossthe province.”

“Fo re s t d e v e l o p m e n tneeds to respect the bound-aries of these OGMAs as afirst step,” he said.

Previously, forest manag-ers aimed to maintain quo-tas of a certain amount ofold growth forest. The pro-posed plan aims to set outspecific locations.

UFV dominated play in thefirst half, but couldn’t find thescore sheet until the 53rd min-ute, when Cascades captainChelsea Steffen converted aDanielle Schmidt corner kick.Sam Temple added to the Cas-cades’ lead in the 62nd min-ute, and Chilliwack’s DonnaPinning converted a penaltyin the 71st minute to seal a vic-tory for the home side.

The inaugural BCHL Showcasescored big, according to Chilli-wack Chiefs president Glen

Ringdal.The event, which was designed

to show off the league’s players tocollege and NHL scouts, saw all 16BCHL teams play two games each atProspera Centre last weekend.

With hundreds of scouts taking inthe action—and with the Chiefs cov-ering their costs and then some—Ringdal said the event accomplishedeverything it set out to do.

“It went very, very well,” he said.

Last week, Ringdal told the Timeshe expected “dozens” of scouts toattend the event. Instead, around200 flocked to Prospera Centre.

“We had a turnout of scouts thatwas well beyond our expectationsand the reports that we got fromthem were extremely positive,” Ring-dal told theTimes. “Our primary goalof exposing the 380 kids who playin our league to the scouts of NorthAmerica was overwhelmingly suc-cessful.”

As far as fan attendance, Ring-dal said organizers came close tomatching their target of 1,000 fans forChiefs games and 350 fans for gamesbetween visiting teams. Those num-

bers would have been higher had theweather not been so good, but theywere still enough to ensure the Chiefsdidn’t lose money on the event. Addi-tional revenues will go toward helpingcompensate other teams’ travel coststo attend the event.

The Chiefs will now put together areport to be presented to the Boardof Governors. Ringdal said the Show-case will happen again, although itwill be up to the board to decide whatform it takes, and where. Chilliwackwas ideally suited for the first event,both geographically and because ofits twin ice surfaces. Finding anotherspot—the Chiefs won’t host it nextyear—may be more difficult.

For all the changes to the ChilliwackChiefs’ lineup over the summer, itwas the one move the team didn’thave to make that shone brightest

last weekend during the BCHL Showcase atProspera Centre.

All-star netminder Mitch Gillam, back withthe Chiefs for a final season despite commit-ting to Cornell University, vexed the Pentic-ton Vees in a losing effort and stymied theNanaimo Clippers in a 2-1 win.

In spite of Gillam’s 46-stop performanceFriday night in the Chiefs’ home opener,Chilliwack fell 2-1 to the defending RoyalBank Cup-champion Vees.

Gillam had denied 39 shots before the Veesfinally beat him early in the third period.

Austin Plevy tied the game on a bank-shotfrom the boards midway through the thirdon a two-man advantage power play. (Plevydrew the second Vees penalty when he wasslashed after deking past two Pentictondefenders).

But the Vees scored late on a Wade Murphyshot from the slot that just trickled throughthe Chiefs netminder and across the goalline.

The following evening, Chilliwack was onthe happy side of the 2-1 score sheet.

Defenders Cooper Rush and DavidThompson each scored off power play point

shots to give Gillam—who made 29 saveson the night—all the offensive support hewould need.

“Mitch played very, very well for us,” saidChilliwack Chiefs coach Harvey Smyl.

Smyl was pleased with his team’s competelevel, which he had questioned after the pre-season.

“We took a step in the right direction,” hetold the Times. “Our work effort was bet-ter, for the most part, our commitment, ourwhole style was a little more aggressive thanit was through the exhibition season.”

Smyl wasn’t too concerned about the factthe Chiefs failed to score at even strength ineither game, but he said he’d like to see histeam go to the net harder.

“I’d like to see us have a little more pene-tration in the blue paint area,” he said.

With recruit Ben Israel held out of thelineup as the Chiefs straighten out a card-ing issue, 16-year-old Abbotsford defence-man Eric Roberts saw considerable ice time,including on the penalty kill.

Ouch.When the Vancouver Island Raiders and

the Chilliwack Huskers meet, the result isalways painful for the men in green. Satur-day was no exception as the Raiders demol-ished the Huskers 85-0 in Nanaimo.

With just 2:10 played in the first quarter,the Raiders were up 21-0 over the Huskers.Turnovers killed Chilliwack early, as theyfumbled the ball away on their first two pos-sessions. Then things got worse: the Huskers

were down 42-0 after 15 minutes and at half,the score was 70-0.

Mercy rules kicked into effect in the sec-ond half, limiting the damage, such as itwas.

The loss was bad, but it’s no anomaly.The Raiders haven’t scored fewer than 50points over the Huskers since 2008. And theyhaven’t surrendered more than seven pointssince 2009.

Over the last seven games between the twoclubs, the Raiders have outscored the Husk-ers 359-42.

Christensen, MacLaren Nels (Mac)August 25, 1936 - September 5, 2012

Mac was a builder throughout hislife. With patience, skill and love,he built beautiful things with hishands, and relationships with hisheart. It was with great sadnessthat his family said their finalgoodbyes at home on September5th, 2012.Mac was born in Rosetown,Saskatchewan and lived in nearbyRuthilda until the age of eight. Hisparents moved the family to PortKells, BC. Three years later, theyarrived in Chilliwack, where helived the rest of his years.In high school (Class of 1955)Mac loved soccer, track and Fieldand socializing with friends. It

was at this time that he discovered his love of working with wood. Thetreasures he created are still enjoyed in the family home. It was also inhigh school that he fell deeply in love with his life-long partner, Marie(Fetterly). They married in 1959.Employed by the Chilliwack School District for 43 years, Mac beganhis career as a carpenter and painter, and was later appointed to theposition of Custodial Supervisor, where he remained for the rest of hiscareer. He enjoyed his time with the District and took great pride in hiswork. His impact continues to be felt.After his retirement, Mac continued to devote his time and energy to hischurch community and family. His trips to the Maritimes, Ottawa,Australia,and church reunions at Samish Island gave him great pleasure.Mac always had time for coffee and a chat. In conversation, he madeyou feel that anything was possible. He was an eternal optimist, with agentle and indomitable spirit. During the last several years, diabetes tookits toll on his health, and he spent a great deal of time fighting the effectsof the disease. Despite considerable pain, Mac never complained. Heloved to be on the go, and enjoyed playing crib and taking long drives(with a stop at Tim Horton’s!). He taught us to appreciate every momentof our lives.Mac is pre-deceased by his parents, Nels and Zella, and two brothers,Cecil and Ken. He leaves behind his loving wife Marie of 53 years; threechildren, Alan, Colleen and Leah; four grandchildren, Taylor, Renae,Benjamin and Nathan; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.Mac’s family wishes to thank Dr. Paul Taylor and the renal team at St.Paul’s Hospital, as well as Dr. Ron Bull and the Home Health nursesin Chilliwack, for their outstanding support. They said it would takecourage to make this journey. Dad, you showed us the way.A celebratory service and reception will be held on Saturday, September15th at 2pm at the Chilliwack Middle School (46354 Yale Road). In lieu offlowers, donations can be sent to World Accord, a Canadian, non-profitdevelopment agency.Mac loved life and found it hard to say goodbye. We were blessed tohave known him as a husband, father, grandpa, uncle and friend.
