Children's Orthopedic Hospital and Medical Center
Accession No. 3530
GUIDE
Children's Orthopedic Hospital was founded in 1907 by Anna Clise and 23 other women, all socially well established, who were concerned about the welfare of the city's crippled poor children. This board of Trustees began with a children's ward in Seattle General Hospital which accepted patients regardless of the ability of parents to pay costs. The original aim of the unit was care of orthopedic cases, but the Trustees soon extended aid to other medical problems of children. In 1908 they built a "Fresh Air Cottage" on Queen Anne Hill and by 1911 a 40 bed hospital next to the cottage. In 1953 the hospital moved to a new building on its present site near Laurelhurst. In 1963 the Hospital's name was changed to Children's Orthopedic Hospital and Medical Center to reflect all functions of the hospital. Today the hospital is a major teaching and research institution affiliated with the University of Washington School of Medicine and other schools. COHMC currently serves over 10,000 children a year, primarily from Washington, Idaho, Montana and Alaska and continues to fund free or part pay treatment for children of poor families. For further historical information see HISTORICAL FEATURES, NOTES AND ROUGH DRAFTS FOR HISTORIES and SUBJECT SERIES - A Place for the Children, all in ADMINISTRATIVE RECORDS.
The hospital is still governed by an all-woman Board of Trustees. A Chairman of the Board is responsible for the Hospital's internal operations and a President oversees the Guilds and all their activities, fundraising, the COHMC shops and all major "all Guild" projects. Begun with the founding of the hospital and increasing in number since, the Orthopedic Guilds and Auxiliaries are groups of women organized throughout the state to support the hospital through dues, fund raising projects and volunteer work. Funds for the hospital are also raised through memberships, memorials, a Thrift Shop, Corner Cupboard, gift store and major projects, including the annual Penny Drive, calendar and Christmas card sales, bazaars, rummage sales, seasonal Holly Box and spring garden sale.
The Guild Advisory Council (begun in 1908 as the Guild Committee) is a group of approximately 22 women - Hospital Committee Chairmen and Board Members - appointed by the Board President. The Council acts as liason between the Guilds and COHMC and deals with matters pertaining to Guild and Auxiliary problems and functions. Each member of the Council acts as a sponsor and liason for a number of groups. The Guild Council also plans the monthly Round Table Meetings. Round Tables are the means by which Presidents of Guilds and Auxiliaries receive reports of Hospital activities and functions and projects of other Guilds. It is the principal contact between the Hospital and individual groups. Frequently a member of the Hospital staff is asked to address the Round Table. Since 1963 there have been a Central Round Table and District Round Table~ throughout King county.

The Public Relations Department was established December 2, 1946 to handle all publicity for the hospital. It was run by a paid Public Relations Director, but cooperated with the COHMC Publicity Committee. Public Relations became part of a new department of Development and Public Relations for one year, 1965-66, but subsequently the two departments separated. The Public Relations Department was responsible for publicity for the hospital, Guilds, and fund raising projects; press relations, bulletins and speakers' bureau. The Development Department had responsibility to develop fund raising programs, public education programs and long range planning. In 1979 a new department of Community Relations took over the functions of Publicity and Development.
Provenance
These records were accumulated in storage and transferred to the Libraries in May 1983.
~~Arrangement
There was no order to the files when they were received. Many files were drawn together or saved for the purpose of compiling a history of the Hospital. The records mainly document the activities of the support groups rather than the medical operations of the hospital. As the records were subgrouped, much was determined to be files of the Public Relations Department and the 75th Anniversary Committee. Records of other Committees were identified and subgrouped, although most are documented only minimally. Records of individual Guilds were treated as one subgroup. Most of these Guilds (not all are represented) are not extensively documented. Many of them are Guilds which disbanded and many of the records were collected by the Hospital historian.
Records identified as relating only to the medical functions of the hospital were put in the MEDICAL STAFF subgroup. These records are not extensive.
