Basil’s Beat Outreach & Involvement Chronicles of Chris Youth Ministry Children’s Ministry Rachel’s Review Our Family Ministry is planning to attend the Family Conference at the McDermott Road Church of Christ in Plano on Saturday, January 20th, 2018, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. We will be taking a bus (hopefully full) of parents who want to be stretched in their role of rearing children. The conference is: Intentionality: Living as Kingdom Families. Some of the class offerings are: Raising Faithful Chris- tians in Todays Culture; Discipleship in a Digital World; Developing a God-Honoring Family Schedule; Raising Your Kids in a Performance Driven World; How to Talk to Your Kids in a Christ-like Way; Living Out Your Faith In a Way That Impacts Your Kids. Cost is only $5 for lunch. Contact me if youd like to go with us! We will celebrate with a candlelight dinner for our first year of the Marriage Mentoring Ministry on January 27 at 7 p.m. in the atrium. We have had a blessed year with mentor and mentee couples that have completed the first year of our program in strengthening marriages. Our Marriage Mentoring Ministry is launching its second year on February 18. Marriage Mentoring pairs younger couples with couples who have many years of experience, and who walk alongside those who desire to grow and strengthen their marriage. The two couples meet together monthly to share food, conversation, and the journey of life. If youd like to be mentored in marriage, please talk to Rachel or me. Titus Project Registration Please continue to fill out forms and turn them in to us. Alternatively we have that registration form available online through the church website and app. The deadline is next Sunday! Girls Retreat Our youth group ladies and the adults that went with them really enjoyed the girls youth retreat they went to last year but were unfortunately informed it was to be the last year. Several of the youth ministers we work with at Arlington Work Camp recommended a weekend with the There4 Gathering in DFW. We have 20 spots available (15 students and 5 adults). Please be advised this event is for high school girls. For most information your best bet is to talk to Sarah. This is also an appropriate time to compliment my wife who volunteers her time and energy to participate and lead in youth group. Her love for our students has been such a blessing to our people here and I love having her as a coworker for the gospel to young people. Titus Project The Titus Project 2018, an intergenerational worship, Bible learning, and service projects for grades 5 th -12 th , will begin January 21 and continue every Sunday night from 5:00-7:30 until April 22. The cost is $60 which includes dinner each night, project supplies, t-shirt, and celebration activities. The deadline for registration is January 14. You may register online or by turning in forms and payment to Rachel or Chris. Thank You Gratefulness is what I feel toward our nursery coordinators who recruit volunteers to care for our children each Sunday during worship! They gladly sacrifice their own desire to be a part of worship, to provide parents with an opportunity to focus on their own spiritual life and participate with the wider church community. Please join me in expressing appreciation for Sue Lain Harrington, Dianna Dale, Jennifer Chapman, Brenda Chapman, and Kathy Reinsch. Collide Collide, a retreat for 5th and 6th graders, will take place February 3-4 in Midlothian. The cost is $50. This event has been a highlight for our Flight 56 students the past three years and we look forward to it again! Please indicate your commitment to participate by January 7. Turn in payment and permission forms by January 10. News and Notes Park Avenue Wednesday Supper Join us this Wednesday, January 10 at 5:30 PM for our PAWS meal. Todd’s Take

"I covenant to live out my discipleship by..."

• Pursuing personal spiritual growth • Serving our church family • Serving our community • Being faithful stewards of our resources • Sharing my faith • Keeping Christ at the center of my family • Living in hopeful expectation of Christ's return

Welcome to Sunday #1 of the new year. A time of new begin-nings. A time to set

goals. A time to make choices that can alter our lives. There’s really nothing inherently special about this Sunday, but being the first of a new year it begs us to check the course of our life and make any necessary adjustments. Today I ask the ques-tion, “What is the trajectory of your life—especially in terms of your relationship with God and your enjoyment of the abundant life he has promised?” It may be that all is right. That you’re right on course and today is just a confirmation to keep doing what you’ve been doing. Or maybe today may be a day when you real-ize that you're a few degrees off course. Maybe today you realize

that you need to make some tweaks to your life to reach the destination you’ve set for yourself. In any case, today we will all take a look at our spiritual lives and reaffirm or adjust. Today is our third annual Covenant Sunday as we set aside the first Sunday of the year to check our bearings and pledge to live out our discipleship. Another tradition we observe on the first Sunday of the year is to celebrate with those who have been baptized the previous year. What a joy to see the 22 souls who have put on Christ in 2017. We will also read Psalm 133—a Psalm that has become somewhat of a rallying cry for PACOC. This beautiful passage celebrates the joy of unity and joy of being his child. So, welcome to 2018. Welcome to Covenant Sunday. Welcome to the rest of your life.

What to Expect Today

Today is Covenant Sunday here at Park Avenue. We won’t be having a traditional sermon, but each one of us

will be asked to renew our commitment to our discipleship, both personally and as members of the

Park Avenue church. At a designated time you will be dismissed to the nearest table where an elder will distribute this year’s covenant stone. Upon being

presented the stone the elder will quote the words of Jesus from Luke 9:23:

Jesus said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and

follow me.”

In response we are asking you to respond back to the elder:

I (We) will follow Him daily.

Along with the distribution of the covenant stone we are incorporating the distribution of the bread of the Lord’s

Supper at the tables. After receiving the covenant stone you can partake of the bread, symbolic of Jesus’ body. After that, return to your seat and, when everyone has

returned to their seats, the cup will be distributed to each member in their pews.

Communication Card Information We ask that everyone here today complete a Communication Card

and place it in the offering trays when they are passed. Alternatively, you can complete one digitally through the church app or the YouVersion event app. In addition to your attendance please

indicate any fellowship or service opportunities you wish to participate in.
