Welcome, friends and families! We’re so glad you joined Children’s Theatre of Charlotte during its 69th season of providing excellent theatre for children and young adults.

Thank you for buying a ticket to see a show today. Months – and sometimes years – of effort went into producing and creating the final product on stage, and now the day has arrived that we've been waiting for, the day we get to share it with you.

We’re excited about all the developments this season at Children’s Theatre of Charlotte. There’s our new theatre festival, WonderFest. There are our new sensory-friendly performances for audience members with an autism spectrum disorder. There are the four world-premiere plays and musicals we’re bringing to life on stage.

You are the reason for each of these.

While we’re proud of our performances and our multiple awards as one of the city’s best performing arts company, it's important to remember Children’s Theatre of Charlotte is so much more than the plays and musicals you watch on stage. It’s also a community center, donating free tickets to families who can’t afford them and bringing theatre to schools and places that don’t have access to the performing arts.

Children’s Theatre of Charlotte also offers award-winning education programs for children of all ages, ranging from Master Classes with the likes of Broadway’s Terrence Mann; to a special by-audition-only Conservatory track of classes that spans five months; to OnStage, a weekend so jam-packed with theatre that we often ask ourselves how the students, teachers, artists and crew are able to pull it off each year.

Dear Friends,

Welcome to Children’s Theatre of Charlotte’s 69th season. It's a season we hope you'll find is filled with wonder and joy and rich with wisdom and a sense of community. I've always believed in the power of community and had a deep connection to the idea of the power of acceptance.

A community is a group of people who come together as a result of sharing common interests, beliefs and goals.

Sometimes that community is a baseball team, a dance class, a school, a neighborhood, a group of friends or even a theatre. But what happens when someone new comes into that community who may not share a common interest or attitude? Or when someone who's in our community begins to believe something different than we do? What if that new person looks or sounds or acts differently than we do?

Where's the magic line between encouraging them to conform to the ways of our community and our own acceptance of something new that might change our community? Most of us don't like change; it can be scary. So how do we learn to accept, and even embrace, that which is different?

Every play in our season is a story of a community embracing acceptance. From A Year with Frog and Toad when Toad offers the birds some cookies he baked and they respond:

“Should we be eating these cookiesOr should we rather have wormsWorms are a product of nature

Toad did the bakingThink of the germs”

Or in Junie B. Jones is Not a Crook, when a new boy shows up at school one day, and Grace and Junie shout:

“Go away, boy! Go away and leave Lucille alone!”

It isn’t just children who grapple with acceptance. In The Best Christmas Pageant Ever: The Musical, it’s the parents who refuse to give the Herdman children a chance.

This is the joy and the challenge of being part of a community. Change is inherent in our lives and in our world. How we choose to handle that change will surely define us.

Because of Charles Schulz’s Snoopy (arguably the most beloved dog of all time), I, as a child, dreamed of one day becoming a cartoonist. Probably what I really wanted was to actually be Snoopy, but as I knew this wasn’t going to happen, I learned how to draw him instead. I so admired his whole approach to life, his indefatigable imagination and his zest for every undertaking.

There is much in life that's confusing to young children. As the youngest in my

family, it seems I was often told “You’ll understand when you’re older” or “Just wait—this will make more sense once you get bigger,” yet as I got bigger and older, I found a lot of those things never did make much sense. At times, I feared there must be something wrong with me, but now I’m more inclined to believe this disparity was the result of the little white lies we tell children in hopes of making the harsh and sometimes absurd realities of life a little more bearable. Because, the truth is, there's no magic door we eventually walk through after which point we're “all grown up” and everything becomes clear.

On the contrary, I’ve found the cause-and-effect principle we teach little ones turns out to be the exception rather than the rule and events in life rarely follow the previous moment with any reliable logic.

That’s why I'm so delighted when we're able to do a piece like Go, Dog. Go! Playwrights Allison Gregory and Steven Dietz have done an amazing job of exactly capturing what they call the “loopy anarchy” of P. D. Eastman’s classic book so our company of talented artists has permission to play wildly in celebration of the utter lunacy of being alive and to say to children big and small, “You see things pretty much for what they are. Not a lot in life makes much sense as it turns out, but it's OK! As a matter of fact, it is beautiful!”

It’s both a blessing and a relief to be able to admit to children that, though the world is, in fact, ruled by unpredictable craziness, the human animal is fortunately well equipped with the mirthful capacity to adapt to and roll with the countless changes that life throws in our path.

Let us all be a bit more like Snoopy, then, and hold one another’s hands as we weather together the challenges and triumphs of living!

My other Children’s Theatre of Charlotte credits include Elephant and Piggie's We Are In A

Play (Squirrelle), Pinkalicious (Ensemble), The Secret Garden (Alice/ Mrs. Winthrop), Busytown (Ensemble), Seussical (Mrs. Mayor and ensemble) and Aladdin (Narrator). My credits at Central Piedmont Community College's Summer Theatre include Legally Blonde (Paulette), Into The Woods (Witch), Cats (Grizabella), Anything Goes (Reno Sweeney), 42nd Street (Maggie) and Damn Yankees (Meg). I'm a graduate of Vanderbilt University, where I earned my Bachelor of Arts in both theatre and English. My favorite role is that of wife to my husband of 17 years, Biff, and mom to Eli and Julia.

Margaret Dalton (Blue Dog) I'm delighted to return to Children’s Theatre of Charlotte this season. My past Children's Theatre of Charlotte credits include: Mrs. Barrington in Grace for President, The Woman in The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, Ella Cinders in Ella’s Big Chance: A Jazz-Age Cinderella and Sally in The Cat in the Hat. Ashby Blakely (Yellow Dog) I'm excited to return to Children's Theatre of Charlotte. Having just moved back to North Carolina from Colorado, I'm thrilled to return to the theatre I consider home. I debuted at Children's Theatre of Charlotte in the 2004 production of Prince Brat and the Whipping Boy and moved with Children's Theatre of Charlotte to ImaginOn as a member of the Resident Touring Company. Since then, I've appeared in numerous productions including my

appearances this season in Junie B. Jones is Not a Crook and A Year With Frog and Toad. I thank Mark, Adam and everyone who made this opportunity possible! I send special thanks to Kevin and Millie for all their love and support!

Deon Releford-Lee (Green Dog) Audiences last saw me in The Little Mermaid (Sebastian) at Cape Fear Regional Theater and A Year with Frog and Toad at Children's Theatre of Charlotte. I earned my Bachelor of Fine Arts in speech/theater and dance from Fayetteville State University. I send big thanks all those involved and remind everyone to never forget: love always and love all ways.

Kayla Piscatelli (Hattie) I'm thrilled to return to Children's Theatre of Charlotte's stage after appearing as Junie B. Jones in Junie B. Jones is Not a Crook. My other Children's Theatre of Charlotte credits include Petite Rouge, Reluctant Dragon, Lily's Purple Plastic Purse and PlayPlay! Theatre's Psshh, Mi Casa, Uh oh! and Wee. In addition to performing, I'm the visual and performing arts coordinator at the Levine Jewish Community Center, where I spend the majority of my time creating

and playing with the most magical tiny humans I've ever known. Thank you to those who inspire me daily and make me feel like a million bucks.

Gina Stewart (Banjo Dog) I'm happy to return home to Children’s Theatre of Charlotte and honored to work with the talented actors and director, Mark Sutton. My favorite memories here include creating music for Tom Sawyer, playing the swashbuckling kitty in Puss in Boots, seven years of touring with the Resident Touring Company among others. I earned a Bachelor of Creative Arts from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. My parents are most proud

of my regional performances in Wildwood Flowers: The June Carter-Cash Story, my performances on the Grand Ole Opry stage in Nashville, Tennessee, and my Off-Broadway appearance in Roundabout Theatre’s Good Ol Girls. Currently, I'm working with my partner, Brenda Gambill, on a

new musical for children entitled Bugs, which will premiere at Asheville Creative Arts Incubator Series in May.

Jason Atkins (Accordion Dog ) I'm excited for my debut at Children's Theatre of Charlotte. You might know me as Greazykeyz, the beloved organist for the Charlotte Checkers. I also perform with many different Charlotte bands of different genres and perform regularly with Tosco Music Party house band. I thank my wonderfully supportive wife, Shelley, and our children, Māya and Brady, for their love and encouragement in my musical pursuits.

Mark Sutton (Director) I'm blessed to have long ago found a home at Children’s Theatre of Charlotte. I love that, above all else, Children's Theatre of Charlotte honors the fantasies and real-life struggles of children. I did my first show here in October of 1992. Since then, not a season has passed in nearly 25 years that I haven't worked on our productions as either an actor, director, sound designer or puppeteer. For a long time, I was program director for our violence-prevention and substance-abuse awareness programs that tour Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools' middle schools. In the 1980s, I studied under John Gillespie at a superb performing arts school in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and under Dale Moffit, Jenna Worthen, Mesrop Kesdekian and Suzan Zeder at Southern Methodist University, yet I must acknowledge my wife, Meredith, our children and the students of Children’s Theatre of Charlotte's Ensemble Company as my greatest teachers during the years. I'm grateful for the formative influences of the work of Jim Henson, Charles Schulz and Norman Rockwell. I'm indebted to the late Alan Poindexter for constructing elaborate imaginary worlds around me for so many years and even more so to former literary manager Lucy Hazlehurst for helping me live through them. My favorite directing credits at Children's Theatre of Charlotte include The Story of the Little Gentleman, The Lion and the Little Red Bird, Hare & Tortoise, The BFG, Balloonacy, Animal Farm and Holes.

Anita J. Tripathi (Scenic Designer) I'm a Charlotte-based scene designer and the assistant professor of design and technology at Davidson College. My professional design credits include Children’s Theatre of Charlotte, The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey (LORT B), Greenbrier Valley Theatre and The Virginia Stage Company (LORT D, resident scene designer). I've also worked regionally as both a properties master and scenic charge and have assisted Tony Award-winning designer David Gallo on a number of productions. I also train students in scene design, scene painting, stage properties, model making and portfolio/resume development. In 2013, the World Stage Design Exhibition featured my work as a finalist, and I received a United States Institute for Theatre Technology Fellowship to support my research in India. Tod A. Kubo (Choreographer) For 23 years, I've choreographed my way across Europe, Asia, Australia and the Americas. I'm thrilled to be in Charlotte choreographing this show for Children's Theatre of Charlotte. I currently work as an adjunct professor at Catawba College and teach dance for its theatre arts department. In the Charlotte region, I've choreographed Rock of Ages, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Passing Strange, Dream A Little Dream (Actor's Theatre of Charlotte), Chicago (Central Piedmont Community College's Summer Theatre) and Heathers and Next To Normal (Queen City Theatre Company). My regional design credits include American Stage (St. Petersburg, Florida), Tuacahn Outdoor Amphitheatre (St. George, Utah), The Tennessee Repertory Theatre (Nashville, Tennessee) and The Straw Hat Players (Moorhead, Minnesota). My design highlights include the world premiere of My Way (2000), an international debut of The Laramie Project (2006) in Tours, France, the world premiere and tour of 101 Dalmatians (2014) from Children's Theatre of Charlotte to Imagination Stage (Bethesda, Maryland) and the world premiere of The Best Christmas Pageant Ever: The Musical (2016). Jason Romney (Sound Designer) I've collaborated with Children's Theatre of Charlotte for six seasons. I've also worked with Florida Studio Theatre, Imagination Stage, No Rules Theatre, Piedmont Opera, Hot Summer Nights at the Kennedy, PlayMakers Repertory Company, Elon University, Ravinia Festival, Triad Stage, Alliance Theatre, Weston Playhouse, Utah Festival Opera and others. I'm an associate professor of sound design at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, and my book, Digital Sound and Music, is available in print from Franklin Beedle and online at digitalsoundandmusic.com.

Katie Pohlheber (Stage Manager) I'm a Charlotte native and a graduate from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. I've worked with Children’s Theatre of Charlotte for four seasons, and I thank my family, friends and mentors for the constant love, support and encouragement.

Ryan Stamey (Music Director and Piano Dog) Audiences may remember me from my past roles at Children's Theatre of Charlotte, including as Sanders in The Shakespeare Stealer and Miss Forcible in last season's Coraline. Sensory-Friendly Performances

Children's Theatre of Charlotte offers a sensory-friendly performance for each of its Mainstage productions. These shows are adjusted for families and friends with children or adults on the autism spectrum or with other sensitivity issues. Each performance is modified to better serve the audience.

● Staff is trained to meet the needs of those attending● Before attending the performances, families can walk through virtual tours online and get to know ImaginOn’s public space including the interior of the McColl Family Theatre and the Wells Fargo Playhouse. ● Parents can download a variety of resources to help them prepare their family for the show.● At the performance, theatre lighting and sound will be softened and the house lights will dim but stay on. ● Guests will have extra room in the house to move around as needed during the performance. ● Quiet spaces, fidgets and headphones will also be available.

ASL Sign-Interpreted Performances
