Children’s Sunday School to ResumeSunday morning classes and music for two-year-olds through high school students will resume on Sunday, August 24. Four-year-olds through sixth-graders participate in Godly Play, a method of Christian formation and spiritual direction for children that features engaging storytelling, beautiful objects that illustrate the message, and materials that encourage a creative response. Based on the teachings of Maria Montessori and Jerome Berryman, Godly Play teaches children the art of using religious language to help them become more aware of the mystery of God’s presence in their lives.

A New Prayer MinistryThis year the Virginia Annual Conference theme was “Lord Renew Us with Your Spirit.” One topic discussed by our Bishop was the need for the Conference to come together in prayer for our churches. In 2013 Bishop Cho challenged us to become more prayerful followers of Christ, and he built on this idea in 2014 when he stressed the necessity of prayer if we are to see our local congregations renewed and thriving once again. There are 1178 churches in our Con-ference. I want to invite you to participate in a new prayer ministry for the coming ten months that will give you the opportunity to pray for each one of them! Beginning in August, you can sign up to receive a weekly e-mail that will include a list of three to four congregations that you can pray for each day. Using this method of scheduling of 25 to 30 churches a week, you’ll be able to pray for all 1178 of them by the time 2015 Annual Conference rolls around next June. The best part is that it only takes a time commitment of 5 to 10 minutes each day! If you would like to be included in this ministry, please e-mail me at [email protected] so that I can add your name to the mailing list. The list will be sent every Sunday for the following Mon–Sun week, and the first one will come out on August 16. Thanks, and I look forward to hearing from you. –Tobias Lutz

In early July, our older elementary children participated in the Virginia Conference Helping Hands mission event, based at Fairview UMC. The children visited God's Pit Crew and the Humane Society to learn about ways they can be involved in service. They enjoyed exciting worship and games and made new friends from other churches. Many thanks to Beth deAristizabal and Thomas Fortney who served as chaperones. Participants were Brendan deAristizabal, Sophie Parrish, Will Anglea, Noah Reed, Mary Hawkins, Elisha Shelton, and Emma Larking.

Remember all the fun we had last year?
Project Crossroads 2014Our team of 28 youth and adults traveled to Marion, Virginia, July 20 – 25 to participate in the home repair ministry of Project Crossroads. This marks the 13th consecutive year our teams have worked in the Appalachian mountains and foothills to assist low-income residents with repairs and projects they cannot afford to do themselves. Our projects this year on three sites included roof replacement and repairs, a new porch, new stairs, repairs to a sagging floor and a porch ceiling, and a wheelchair ramp. The three families were delighted with the work and expressed their sincere appreciation for the excellent handiwork of our team. “Serving from the Heart” was the theme and focus of our program time as we explored our own spiritual gifts and affirmed the gifts of others. After work we enjoyed trips to the Marion pool, the Saltville wave pool, and the ice cream shop.
Once again, our whole team benefited from the loving care shown to us by Margaret Scott and Tammy Waters, our cooks. Thanks to all who served as Prayer Partners with our team members. The letters were much appreciated and we felt your prayers.
