Community foundations are built on the idea that it isn’t the size of the gift but the act of giving. Collective impact makes the difference. One gift of 25 dollars may not do much by itself but when 1000 or even 10,000 people give that amount things start to change.
SCF brings donors to the table as community builders, working closely with them to align their philanthropic vision with the community’s needs. Each of our donors contributes to a fund held by the Foundation with the option of creating a fund with their name on it.
Our philosophy is not to spend the gift but invest it instead. Each year we return earnings on those gifts to community programmes and projects. Because we don’t spend our gifts we still have the original gift and the cycle repeats.
Forever and Always
Because when we work with you the community is betterWe celebrated 35 years of community building in 2018
Forever and Always
Because every donor makes a difference
We welcome donors from all walks of life and value the complexity of the not for profit sector for the value it brings to the community as a whole.
Most of our funds are endowed or permanent. The Foundation also manages funds on a short term basis. Some are flow through arrangements where the Foundation grants out money on the donors behalf in less than two years. Some are slightly longer arrangements of up to five years. In 2018 we welcomed many new donors as well as 7 new permanent and 2 short term funds to the Foundation family.
Donors to SCF have many options and by establishing a fund have the flexibility to shape their charitable giving. Whether you want to address an urgent need in the community, honour the memory of a loved one or support your favourite charity, SCF ensures that your gift will make a difference

Our annual grant cycle begins when the Board determines the amount available for grants in any year. Applications are submitted to the Foundation.
A committee made up of community volunteers reads every application submitted, debates the impact of the project on the community as a whole and makes a recommendation for funding to the Board. When the process is complete grants are released.
Because we help meet community needs great things happen In 2018 more than 50 Lambton County organizations were able to do great things because of an SCF grant.

While we strive to achieve above average market returns, we can’t always predict what the market value of funds will be at the end of our fiscal year, December 31st. Market returns for 2018 were less than expected at year end. As the markets appear to have recovered, the Foundation Board opted to use the full reserve set aside in previous years for grants to ensure stability for community grants in 2019.
