Chiropractic care is typically mentioned under the umbrella of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). The National Health Statistics Report states that CAM use has remained steady with 4 in 10 adults and 1 in 9 children. Chiropractic care is the most common CAM therapy for children. Chiropractors see an average of 133 patients per week with 21% of thosepatients being children under the age of 18 years.

Wellness care is the most common reason for care with ear/nose/throat issues close behind. The purpose of chiropractic wellness care is to optimize the level of function and provide a process of achieving the best possible function and health.

A survey of health promotion activities associated with maintenance/wellness chiropractic care found that 90% of the 658 surveyed chiropractors agreed that the purpose of maintenance care was to optimize health, 88% agreed it was use to prevent conditions from developing, 86% agreed it was palliative, and 95% agreed it was used to minimize recurrence or exacerbations. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), health is defined as “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”

In the largest study of chiropractic ever conducted, patients reported positive changes in four domains of health (physical state, mental/emotional state, stress evaluation, life enjoyment) as well as improved quality of life. Sarnat et al analyzed clinical data for a seven year time period, the authors reported decreases of: 60.2% in hospital admissions, 59% hospital days, 62% outpatient surgeries and procedures, and 85% pharmaceutical costs.

Van Breda surveyed 200 pediatricians & 200 chiropractors tocompare differences in health of their respective children. It was noted that there was a correlation between chiropractic care and superior health as indicated by a significant decrease in antibiotic use for the children under chiropractic careimplying an improved function of the immune system as it compares to children raised under the medical model of health care.

The study looked at five children who were under chiropractic care from birth and all the mothers were under care prenatally. The children included three boys and two girls who were under chiropractic care ranging from 9-13 years.

All of the patients were examined by the chiropractor who found structural shifts in their spines. Structural spinal shifts can lead to obstruction of the nerves and it is this obstruction, called vertebral subluxations, that chiropractors correct. The vertebral subluxations were the focus of the care provided to these women and their children.

All mothers reported feeling good during their pregnancy with a decrease in symptoms such as low back pain, extremity numbness, and generalized soreness. All the children were breastfed and experienced healthy childhoods without suffering from typical childhood illnesses. All were reported to have a healthy diet, exercised regularly and slept well. All parents reported their child’s health to be better than other children of the same age. The authors concluded that the results show the need for continued studies into health outcomes following long term chiropractic management before, during and after birth.
