Ahmedabad: It is more possible that childhood obesity contributes to asthma rather than the other way round, says a survey.

For years, doctors have known that there's a link between child years obesity and asthma, but are finding it difficult to determine which condition will come first, or whether one causes the other.

"The relationship between obesity and asthma in grown ups, which shows that weight problems and obese can precede this onset of asthma, is supported by quite a few studies, " said steer doctor Manish Khaitan connected with Bariatric Surgeon from Oriental Bariatric Hospital in Ahmedabad Gujarat India.

"There is not as often evidence for children, though the progression from obesity to asthma, rather than the other way around, seems possible, "

Citing a study in which showed that rapid progress in body mass index (BMI) during the first two years of life increased the risk of asthma up to six yrs .old, the team shows which the onset and duration of obesity plus the composition of the excess fat can affect lung function.

"Most kids who suffer from asthma also have allergic reactions, " said Dr. Manish Khaitan

"These allergic responses in the lung can bring about symptoms of allergy, ” Doctor Manish Khaitan added.
