TodAY’S WoRSHIP Today, we are celebrating the Lord’s Supper, and so we are having one combined service at 11:00 a.m. Pastor Drew will resume his sermon series on the gospel of Mark next week, but this week he will be preaching a sermon titled, Building the Body of Christ based on Ephesians 4:11-13. The New Testament depicts two broad types of ministry within local churches. While all Christians fulfill informal ministering roles, some held formal and official ministerial offices. Paul called these official ministers “overseers and deacons” (Phil. 1:1). Sometimes he referred to overseers as “elders.” The “elders“ bore primary responsibility for ruling and teaching the church (1 Tim. 5:17), and the “deacons” were charged with ministering to the material needs of the believers (Acts 6:1-6). It is clear, however, that these officers who oversee local churches should not restrict the informal ministries, but rather should facilitate them (Eph. 4:11-13). The official ministers (elders and deacons) are not primarily those who do the work of ministry; it is the people they equip. Effective teachers help each believer find their own way of benefiting the rest of the church. Those who minister informally, however, should not be defiant or disruptive, but should allow the elders to direct their ministries in ways that are orderly and edifying (1 Cor. 14:3-5, 12, 26, 40; Heb. 13:17). The body of Christ grows to maturity in faith and love as “each part is working properly” (Eph. 4:16) and fulfills its particular form of service as granted by God’s grace (Eph. 4:7, 12). Our closing hymn is Edward Perronet’s exuberant hymn, All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name, written in 1779. This hymn has been called the “National Anthem of Christendom,” and is one of the truly great worship hymns of the church. Perronet was a young English minister at the time of writing this hymn, and it has been translated into almost every language where Christianity is known. Even as we learn of how we build the Body of Christ, we can also declare that the angels in heaven and ransomed souls from “every kindred, every tribe” on earth join together in singing “the everlasting song” – when Christ, the Head of the Body is crowned “Lord of all.” Please join as we sing:

Evening Pastor Mick Weltin continues our sermon series this evening on the doctrines of our faith. He will be preaching on God’s promise of eternal life to those who believe in Christ. Though written to encourage and exhort the Corinthian church of Paul’s day, we too can remember the promise of God, knowing that we will enjoy eternal life and that our efforts to live for Christ are never in “vain” (v. 58). His sermon is titled, Immortality, and is based on 1 Corinthians 15:50-58.

MISSIoNARY ASSoCIATE oF THE WEEk Do you ever wonder about the lives of our Missionary Associates, where they were born, their childhood upbringing, how they came to know the Savior, where and how called to ministry, etc.? Nelly Vos, our Associate in Marseille, France wrote such an account of her life recently, full of good information but too long to duplicate here but below are some highlights: Born in France, the second of five daughters, the only Protestant family in their village. August 15, 1969 clear-cut conversion combined with a call to mission. Graduated from college in 1977, went to Marseille to be trained with Operation Mobilization, met David Vos, an American from Detroit, MI spending his gap year from his studies at Calvin College at Marseille. Married June 21, 1980, spending time in Miami training for church planting for Jamaicans, moved to Aix-en-Provence, France so David could attend seminary. Two daughters, Helene and Anne-Claire born there. Moved to Montpellier, France for 9 years in ministry to Muslims, third daughter, Heidi, born, enjoyed raising their three daughters while ministering to teenage girls in Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. Moved to Lyon, France, third largest city in France, in November, 1998 and on Ascension Day six months later, walking the hills of Lyon with other believers, David’s heart collapsed, causing his death May 17. Nelly adopted the words of Psa. 146:8, “The Lord watches over the alien, he sustains the fatherless and the widow, but frustrates the ways of the wicked.” Nelly writes, “I knew then I could trust him.” After David’s death, she worked at the seminary in Aix for three years, then moved to Marseille and while there took a short trip to Egypt, Jordan and Israel, a trip, she says, was used by God to revolutionize her heart. Nelly now has three grandchildren, twins in Nicaragua, the other in France, her third daughter (yet unmarried) living in Chattanooga, TN. Her mother living in France, now 85 has been hospitalized. All these comprise both continued prayer and praise concerns. Her closing words – Thanks again for being and power. Watch for further details and registration information.
