the term child labour is often defined as work that deprives children of their childhood, their potential

and their dignity, and that is harmful to physical and mental development. Child labour is any work that is

mentally, physically, socially or morally dangerous and harmful to children, interferes with their schooling, deprives them of the opportunity to attend school,

makes them to leave school early or requires them to attempt to combine school with long and heavy work .

In South Asia, another 44 million are involved in child labour. . Children living in the poorest households and in

rural areas are most likely to be engaged in child labour. Those burdened with household chores are overwhelmingly girls. Millions of girls who work as domestic servants are especially vulnerable to

exploitation and abuse. This practice of child labour is considered exploitative by many and is illegal in many

countries. IPEC is an organization set up to fight against Child Labour. Since it started in 1992, IPEC has

worked to get rid of child labour in several ways,

An estimated 158 million children aged 5-14 are involved in child labour , one in six children in the world. Millions of children are forced to work in dangerous situations or conditions, such as working in mines, working with

chemicals and pesticides in agriculture or working with dangerous machinery. They are everywhere but invisible, working as domestic servants in homes,

labouring behind the walls of workshops, hidden from view in plantations. In Sub-Saharan Africa around one in

three children are involved in child labour, representing 69 million children altogether.

through country-based programmes which promote policy reform, build institutional capacity and put in place

measures to end child labour, and through awareness raising and mobilization intended to change social attitudes and promote ratification and effective

implementation of ILO child labour Conventions. These efforts have resulted in hundreds of thousands of

children being withdrawn from work and rehabilitated or prevented from entering the workforce. In its most extreme forms, child labour involves children

being enslaved, separated from their families,

exposed to serious hazards and illnesses and left to fend for themselves on the streets of large cities,
