Child labor refers to the illegal employment of children below 18 years old in hazardous occupations.

ILO defines child labor as, damage to children’s health, hamper their education and lead to further exploitation and abuse.

ILO also defines the worst child labour which includes using children in armed forces (i.e. in Africa), sexual exploitation like prostitution and pornography, illegal activities like trafficking of drugs etc.

The State, through the Department of Labour and Employment, defines "child labour" as "the illegal employment of children below the age of fifteen (15)…….

The term "child" recently acquired a new meaning upon the enactment of R.A. 7610 in 1992, otherwise known as the Child Protection Law. 

The new law, which devotes an entire chapter on working children, expanded the definition of children to mean "persons below eighteen (18) years of age or those over but are unable to fully take care of themselves or protect themselves from abuse, neglect, cruelty, exploitation or discrimination because of a physical or mental disability or condition.“c

About 2.06 million children all around the Philippines are compelled to do labor, such as in crop plantations, mining caves, rock quarries and factories.

Every child has the right to the most basic of necessities in life like a healthy environment, formal education, and most importantly, a loving family to come home.

Child labour is rooted in poverty and the lack of economic opportunities

Children with unemployed parents or whose parents do not have social security must work to help in their family's struggle for survival.
