CHILD ABUSE HURTS

CHILD ABUSE HURTS

The Maltreatment of children has been suggested to not only impair the normal development of the brain, but also to have lasting effects on cognition, behavior, affect and social interaction and for years. (Perry et al., 1996)1

LIFE BEGINSATTHEMOMENTOFCONCEPTION

So Then Why would anyone harm a child? Well Two Psychiatrists Wang and Daro gave a surprising revelation in their peer reviewed 1997 Journal on Child Abuse America Prevalence and Consequences, it stated that an estimated 3,195,000 children were reported to the Child Protective Services (CPS) nationwide for being abuse and/or neglected. (Wang and Daro, 1997)2

BUDGET WARS

THE TUG OF WAR

BETWEEN THE STATES

I read an article on the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities webpage and surprisingly when you look at the statistics you can see where The Tug of war began with at least 46 States that were mandated to cut or trim the budget for various programs. And By doing this it is sure to cause a strain for many families who are seeking assistance with Medicaid, Food Stamps, Educational Programs, and Health Care. I also noticed in the article that programs for the elderly and disabled will be cut and many of the State Workers and Service Provider jobs will be affected through layoffs and furloughs. Nicholas Johnson, Phil Oliff Erica Williams (February 9 2011). 3 Child AbuseThe Federal Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA),(42 U.S.C.A. 5106gDefines child abuse and neglect at a minimum Of any recent act or failure to act on the part of a parent or caretaker which results in death, serious physical or emotional harm sexual abuse or exploitation or an act or failure to act which presents an imminent risk of serious harmChild Welfare Information Gateway (2008)How Is Child Abuseand neglect defined by federal law

*Mona never thought that her daughter would become a victim of child abuse at the hands of a babysitter that she trusted, but every day according to an article at the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research it says A Child whos being abused may feel guilty ashamed or confused. Also the article stated that He or she may be afraid to tell anyone about the abuse, especially if the abuser is a parent relative or family friend. Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research (July 1, 2010).

Note* All parents must speak to their children about child abuse, and they must also make sure that the children tell them when anything happens to them like when someone touches them in an uncomfortable way, or when someone hits yells or spanks them, they must learn to also tell their parents if someone is mistreating them or doing something to them that does not make them feel right. Because when children feel like they can trust their parents they will tell them when someone is doing something to them, also once parents realize it is a matter of respect to and for the children and a establishment of trust between them and their child or children, that will make the child feel more comfortable and not afraid to talk even when the perpetrator or abuser tells them they better not say anything they will still tell their parents.4In the Journal of Aggression Maltreatment and TraumaMany studies have been done on child abuse but none as intense as the studies that were done in the Journal of Aggression Maltreatment Trauma.

When the authors made their findings they were able to list ten different symptoms ranging from depression to learning disorders that child abuse inflicts on its victims

Many times studies are done on child abuse, or what types of abuse there is, and also many studies will show the statistical graphs and data by states on the various kinds of child abuse but in this Journal of Aggression Maltreatment and Trauma, it shows the causes of abuse and the symptoms of abuse, and also it shows the long term effects that last sometimes from a child well into their adulthood. And while help is available, if someone does not reach out to the list of providers they are given by social service agencies or psychiatrists these psychiatric symptoms can last a lifetime.5Lets look at THE TOP ten psychiatric symptoms that child abuse inflicts on its victims

2. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is defined as a type of anxiety disorder it can occur after youve seen or experienced a traumatic event that involved the threat or injury or death 1. Depression is defined as a mental state of altered mood characterized by feelings of sadness despair depressiveDepression and Post traumatic Stress disorder has gone from a problem to a full blown disease, and the states Medicaid program is so inundated with patients that Medicaid cannot handle the overload and some of the patients are put into the hospital and after no longer than a week they are being released back into society. Most mentally ill patients usually wind up being left on the street homeless because they have no family members who want to take them in or because of depression and post traumatic stress they are put in jail because cities and counties do not know how to deal with the problems of mental illness.

3. Borderline Personality Disorder4. Substance Abuse5. Dissociative Disorders 6. Somatization 7. Sexual Behavior Problems8. Self Mutilation9. Suicidality 10.Learning Disability

The Tenth Psychiatric Symptom is called a Learning Disability and according to Medicine.net it is defined as a childhood disorder characterized by difficulty with certain skills such as reading or writing in individuals with normal intelligence. And while most children suffer from a learning disability outside of any type of abuse when children are abused they shut down and its not because they dont want to learn but they are sending a message that something is wrong because like depression a child with a learning disability seems to be withdrawn and to themselves.7Whose fault is child abuse anyway

Many People want to know why does child abuse happen to so many children? And what is being done to help or assist them? Especially in the middle of a crisis like State Budgets and Community Programs being cut? Well according to the U. S. Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention The Laws Response to Child Abuse is Child Abuse is a community problem no single agency has the training, manpower, resources, or legal mandate to intervene effectively in child abuse cases, no one agency has the sole responsibility for dealing with abused children. And after reading the article I found out that Child Abuse is not only a Community Problem but it is everyones problems and though this agency is a federal agency they have a team of people as listed in the article like doctors, policeman, therapists, etc. to help all of the children in crisis. Finally the long term effects of child abuse or any of the listed psychiatric symptoms of abuse without therapy will have an indelible impact, not only on the lives of the abused but on the lives of all of the people who do not know that they have been abused, physically, mentally, sexually, verbally, or emotionally abused. 8REFERENCES
