Who I am, What I do

0 Industrial-Organizational Psychology background0 PSE is a Human Factors Engineering company

0 We do research and some development to support harmonious integration of humans and systems

0 Approx 30 people, many are cognitive scientists, psychologists, and just a few developers

0 Lots of government and military contracts, but not a ton of commercial stuff at the moment

0 Attempting to incorporate UX capabilities into our work0 ROI is big -- How do you tell a submarine Captain that he

should care about UX? He only wants to hear:0How we make it safer (i.e. more reliable)0How we make it cheaper (i.e. with fewer people)

What is UX? How is it ‘done’?0 Some important considerations that collectively define how we

view the field of UX:0 Primary focus of the end product is on the ‘emerging

intentions’ and ‘expectations’ of users across visualization and interaction design principles1. Allows for communication early and often with

stakeholders at every level (visionaries for the product often include project sponsors as well as end users)

2. Enables fast, early iteration of multiple designs using wireframes, storyboards, user personas, and custom metrics (not one-size fits all)

3. Implementation of novel, innovative metrics and tools such as usertesting.com, usabilla.com, keynote.com, etc.

The Important DifferencesUSER experience HUMAN factors

1. Focus on the ‘emerging intentions’ and ‘expectations’ of users

2. Application of both visualization and interaction design principles to products

3. Communicate early and often with stakeholders at every level (“users” know best)

4. Fast, early iteration of multiple low-fidelity conceptual designs

5. Implementation of novel, innovative testing metrics and tools

1. Focus on the ‘tasks’ and ‘workflow’ of users

2. Application of mostly visualization design principles to products

3. Visionaries on the project may vary and may not include relevant stakeholders (“scientists” know best)

4. Lean toward high-fidelity designs earlier without as much iterative testing

5. Traditional focus on small ‘n’, expensive lab studies

Bringing UX to an HF world

A great product experience can only be crafted in an environment that encourages collaboration, iteration, and risk. Working in unison, having patience and long-term

vision, and being willing to fail are key factors to success.
