About the BHF The BHF raises money to research cures and treatments to beat heartbreak from heart and circulatory diseases like heart disease, stroke, vascular dementia and their risk factors like diabetes. These diseases can happen to anyone and everyone. By funding the research that will find cures and end the heartbreak they cause, we hope to realise our vision of a world without heart and circulatory diseases.

The BHF was founded in 1961 and is the leading independent funder of cardiovascular research in the UK with annual income in excess of £135 million, an employee base of over 4,100, supported by a further 22,000 volunteers. The lifesaving work of the BHF is

primarily advanced through long-term investment in medical research with an aspiration to invest £500 million in cardiovascular research over the next fiv e years. Our pioneering research has helped to transform the lives of people living with heart and circulatory conditions. The landscape of heart and circulatory disease is changing. More people survive a heart attack than ever before, and that combined with an ageing population means more people are now living with heart disease and need help. The BHF will continue our fight through pioneering heart research, vital prevention and survival activity and ensuring quality care and support for everyone living with a heart condition.

Our strategy to 2030 Over more than 50 years, the BHF’s research has helped to reduce heart and circulatory deaths by more than half. However, although we’ve made great strides in solving the problems of the past, new challenges are emerging that demand new approaches. As such, since Spring 2018, the BHF has been looking at re-defining our organisational strategy to guide our efforts until 2030 (our current strategy, though soon to be superseded, can be found here). We are getting closer to finalising our strategy, but there is still work underway in finalising the wording, detail and presentation of this new strategy. However, it is currently forming under the four areas below, where funding world-class research remains at the core of our mission. But in order to keep funding that research, and ensuring it is translated into real-world impact, we will also need to focus on three other interconnected and mutually dependent areas that are critical to our success.

1. We fund research to save and improve lives. Funding world-class research is the core of our mission. Our ambition is to invest at least £1bn in research between now and 2030. We believe that world-class research is at the heart of helping us Beat Heartbreak Forever. We therefore intend to expand and enhance our research programme, accelerating discovery, and turning these discoveries into live-saving medical advances

2. We work with patients and the public to improve health and care. We are the nation’s heart charity. We advocate on behalf of people affected by heart and circulatory diseases. We catalyse solutions as well as developing innovative products and services that meet people’s needs. We involve them in everything the BHF does. By 2030, we want fewer people to develop heart and circulatory diseases, make sure those with existing conditions and risk factors are detected early, and ensure everyone has access to the treatment and care they need, regardless of their personal circumstances.

3. We grow support and income. The burden of heart and circulatory diseases is growing, and only through investing more in the best research and innovation can we turn back the tide. The urgency of the problem means that we and others need to raise more money than ever before so we can keep breaking new ground

4. We strive for excellence. At the BHF we are driven to be a leading organisation within and beyond the charity sector, making the most of every pound entrusted to us. We are ever mindful that this can only be achieved through living our values of being brave, driven, compassionate and informed.
