I want to thank all of our donors for the generous support we received this year. Thanks to your individual gifts, support from garden clubs, and the results of our annual fundraising event Spring at the Inn, we met our fundraising goal of $150,000.

I’d also like to acknowledge the grant support provided by the Cargill Foundation, General Mills Foundation, HealthPartners yumPower, Gannett Foundation and the St. Paul Garden Club to our Garden-in-a-Box program. Over the last 5 years, the program has distributed 835 garden boxes to low-income families, as well as provided additional educational resources. Because of Garden-in-a-Box, kids can snack on healthy food that they grew themselves, like the Oneka Elementary School students pictured here.

We at MSHS are looking forward to 2016 and the celebration of our 150th anniversary. We will keep you updated in Northern Gardener and through our monthly Enewsletter on the activities planned in celebration of this milestone. We hope you will be a part of the celebration!

Garden-in-a-BoxGrowing Gardeners

The Garden-in-a-Box program improves early childhood nutrition by not only giving easy access to fresh vegetables to children, but also teaching them how to grow vegetables--a skill that will help them have easy access to healthy, local produce throughout their life

Now in its 7th year, Garden-in-a-Box distributed 155 garden kits in 8 counties to first time participants through youth programs, families, nonprofits, service and rehab groups, food shelves and community gardens. 180 qualifying participants in 9 counties from the previous year received plants, seeds and compost for their boxes. Children ate vegetables that they grew, they made healthy snacks and brought food home to their families.

New this year was the addition of webinars to share gardening advice and timely topics for the site coordinators.

We were also able to significantly increase the number of onsite visits: 85% of the 1st year sites and 60% of 2nd year sites were visited by the program coordinator Jackie Baum. The site visits were the best tool for solving problems, reiterating training concepts and assessing the knowledge gained by the participants.

Connecting People Through PlantsIn 2015, over 130 garden sites, tended by 66 garden groups in 8 counties, benefited from the Minnesota Green donations. The gardens range from beautification projects to vegetable plots.

Minnesota Green has supported community gardening projects statewide since 1988. Through the generosity of growers, garden centers, nurseries, seed companies, and individuals, plant donations ranging from watering tools, trees and shrubs, hardy perennials and flats of annuals have contributed to our communities – both for food production as well as beautification.
