Updating of the proficiency badge syllabus was a long felt need. It required dedication

and the commitment of many individuals in many fields. I am grateful to the National

Programme Commissioner Rohan Wirasekara for the work done, and Hq.

Commissioner Ruwan Ariyaratne and many others who had contributed to make this a

reality. As we go on we will have to keep on updating and changing this. We need the

support and the ideas of all Scouts, parents, Scout Masters, Commissioners and lay

members for continual up dates and changes so that some of those could be

incorporated into later publications.

It is also important that the Districts appoint proper badge examiners who are dedicated

& committed, for these badges. The role of the badge examiner is not limited to testing

a Scout. It is up to the examiner to teach and train him in what the Scout does not know

and bring him to the level where he could pass. Please understand that this is not the

responsibility of only the Scout Master but also that of the examiner. It is also important

for the examiner to understand that the effort made by the Scout is also important. This

would depend on the environment that the Scout would come from and various other

abilities and disabilities. One may not be able to expect the same standard from all

Scouts at all levels.

The other extreme is for the examiner to pass a Scout who has no knowledge or skill or

interest in this particular field but only wants to get the badge without much effort. This

would be bad training and a bad example too.

Finally I do hope that the Scouts would enjoy doing these badges and would also learn

much from them.

PUBLIC SERVICE GROUP

LINGUST- JA -1 (Corresponding badge for over 14Yrs 6 months – SA - 1 Interpreter)

Objective:- To be basically conversant in a language other than his own.

Carry out the following tests in any language other than his own.:- 1.) A simple conversation for 10 minutes. 2.) Write a simple letter of at least 100 words 3.) Translate in his own time & with the help of a dictionary, an easy passage from a book or

periodical(Scout literature to be used where available) MISSIONER-JA-2 (Corresponding badge for over 14Yrs 6 months – SA -2- Public Health)

Objective:-Be able to explain and demonstrate basics in caring and looking after a patient

1.) Demonstrate how to choose, prepare and ventilate a sick room.

2.) Know how to bathe a patient and give medicine. Demonstrate how to take temperature,

3.) Demonstrate how to prepare invalid food. Know how to prevent bed sores

4.) Know how to prepare dressings and how to apply a roller bandage to hand knee and

foot.

5.) Carry out all the above under camp conditions, as well as in a sick room.. Know how to

prepare a rest tent

FIRE-FIGHTER- JA-3(Corresponding badge for over 14Yrs 6 months – SA-3 Fireman)

Objective:- Be able to explain and demonstrate basics of how to prevent a fire and how to

act during a fire

1.) Understand how your local fire brigade works.

2.) Know what precautions are necessary and the possibilities of spreading fire in oil lamps,

all types of heaters and stoves, airing linen, decorations, electrical wiring fuses and

switches

3.) Explain what action should be taken, and why, on an outbreak of fire indoors or

outdoors. Know the various methods of calling the Fire Service and the correct

procedure to be taken; have a knowledge of what happens from the time of the call to its

acceptance by the fire service. Know the essential action to be taken whilst awaiting the

arrival of the fire service and the reasons for such action.

4.) Take part in a bucket chain. Know how to use a stirrup pump. Know how to use a soda

acid extinguisher and a carbon tetrachloride extinguisher, and for what types of fire that

they could be used. Know how to deal with a person whose clothes are on fire.

5.) Be proficient in making the Fireman’s Chair knot, and Bow line on a bight. Demonstrate

the use of a scrum to keep back crowds

6.) Give a simple explanation of the process of combustion. Know the effects of smoke and

heat and how to act in smoke.

SIGNALLER- JA-4(Corresponding badge for over 14Yrs 6 months – SA-4 Leading

Signaller)

Objective:- To show a basic knowledge in using the Morse and Semaphore signaling

1.) Send & receive a message of not less than 80 letters of rate 6( 30 letters per minute) in

Semaphore, or rate 4 ( 20 letters per minute) by flag in Morse.

2.) Send a similar message in Morse: - On buzzer at rate 5( 25 letters per minute).

On lamp or torch rate 4(20 letters a minute)

3.) Demonstrate that he knows a recognized procedure when sending and receiving

messages.

Note: 80 per cent accuracy to be required in all tests. Outdoor stations for sending and receiving to be not less than 100 meters apart. Buzzer stations to be in separate rooms.

CYCLIST- JA-5(Corresponding badge for over 14Yrs 6 months – SA-5 Dispatch Rider)

Objective:- Demonstrate the ability to use , repair, and safely ride a bicycle

1.) Owns or has the use of, and have used satisfactorily for at least six months, a cycle in

good order.

2.) Demonstrate that the Scout can affect simple repairs which might include the following

at the discretion of the examiner: change the tyre & tube, mend a puncture, replace a

brake, adjust a wheel bearing, or any part of the bicycle.

3.) Demonstrate that he knows the Highway Code, traffic signals, road signs, national

system of road numbering and is able to read a road map.

4.) Repeat correctly a verbal message after a ride of at least one hour duration

GUIDE- JA-6(Corresponding badge for over 14Yrs 6 months – SA-6 Path Finder)

Objective:- Be able to direct a person to important locations in a specified area

1.) Show ( whenever reasonable in a practical way) that he knows the locality surrounding

his home and his Scout headquarters, up to one KM radius in municipalities and Urban

Councils and up to two KM radius in other areas. The D.C, may at his discretion, vary

the area to exclude undesirable neighbourhoods, parks or other open spaces and

include an equivalent area.

2.) Know the whereabouts of the following:-

(a) Doctors, Ayurvedic physicians , Veterinary surgeons, dentists, hospitals,

dispensaries, police etc.

(b) Fire station, garage, post office, Electricity board

(c) Bus stops, Railway stations, and routes of buses and trains to surrounding areas

(d) district Scout headquarters, public parks, Banks, theatres, cinemas, places of

religious worship, museums, shops, markets, Public conveniences, and any building or

places of local interest

(e)homes of his District Commissioner., G.S.M., S.M., Grama sevaka, and the Scouts of

his Patrol.

3.) Show that he understands how to use the map of the district and use it to point out at

least 6 examples of (2) above. The Scout should guide the examiner to any place

covered by the above by the shortest route.

4.) Have a general knowledge of means of access by road, train or public transport to

nearest city, town or suburbs. Be able to give general directions to get from his home or

headquarters to six places of general interest in his city town or village.

FIRST AID- JA-7(Corresponding badge for over 14Yrs 6 months – SA-7 ambulance)

Objective: - Be able to demonstrate and explain some basic First Aid requirements at camp

and at home

1) Demonstrate his knowledge of up to GSM’s Award first Aid

2) Understand what D.R.A.B.C. is (i. e. Danger, Response, Airway, Breathing and

Circulation)

3) Explain in outline the circulation of blood. Know the position of the main arteries and

how to stop external bleeding from veins and arteries.

4) Understand the signs and symptoms of shock & demonstrate how to deal with it.

5) Demonstrate treatment for electric shock

6) Know how to apply the triangular bandage to scalp, hand. Foot, knee, and elbow.

Demonstrate how to put the large arm sling and the St. John’s arm sling (elevation

sling), and how to put the roller bandage (Crape) to all limbs.

7) Explain and demonstrate C.P.R. (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) under no

circumstance should a living person be used to demonstrate C.P.R.

8) Demonstrate how to send a correct message, oral, written, and by telephone regarding

a casualty.

9) Show the ability to identify the signs and the symptoms of fractures, and the treatment

for them. Demonstrate how to deal with a fracture of the collar bone

10) Take part as a member of a team (not necessarily as the leader) of three or four Scouts

and deal with an incident stages by the examiner. Such incident must be based on the

above items and to be conducted in as realistic a manner as possible. All actions proper

to the circumstances must be actually taken, and the examiner will test for coolness,

resourcefulness, correct action(Message to Doctor, home, parents etc.) and the proper

treatment of the patient in all stages

LIFE SAVER- JA-8(Corresponding badge for over 14Yrs 6 months – SA-8 Rescuer)

Objective: - Demonstrate and explain the knowledge on action necessary to be taken to

rescue a person in an emergency

1) Demonstrate one method of rescue and of release, in water, with casualty about the

size of the rescuer. The casualty to be carried about 10 meters.

2) Demonstrate his ability to do C.P.R..Under no circumstance should a living person be

used to demonstrate C.P.R. Demonstrate the Recovery position

3) Swim 50 meters back Stroke attired in shirt and shorts with light life-line attached to

him.

4) Throw a 20 meter life line to fall between two pegs twice out of every three throws.

Pegs to be about 1 ½ Meters apart and 15 meter from the thrower.

5) Show method of rescue in the following :-

a) House Fire, first floor, unconscious patient

b) Car accident with or without fire

c) Contact with live electric wire

COXSWAIN- JA-9(Corresponding badge for over 14Yrs 6 months – SA-9 Pilot)

Objective: - Demonstrate the

ability in basics of handling a small craft

1) Name the different parts of a pulling boat or a rubber dinghy

2) Take charge of a boat’s crew and demonstrate that he can

a) Use correct pulling orders

b) Bring the boat alongside a vessel or a landing stage

c) Anchor correctly

d) Maintain boat discipline

3) Know the elementary rule of Road at sea for ships.

4) Know how to put the following and their uses:- Clove Hitch, Rolling Hitch, Fisherman’s

Bend

5) Know the gear that should be properly carried in a pulling or motor boat

6) Form part of a crew of a boat for an expedition of not less than 24 hours duration, to

include a night spent in camp on the way.

JOBMAN- JA-10(Corresponding badge for over 14Yrs 6 months – SA-10 Handyman)

Objective: - Explain and demonstrate doing small repairs etc. at home

Be able to do 10 of the following. At least 3 of which must be demonstrated.

1) Paint a door, or household furniture, and clean the brushes used

2) Painting a wall

3) Adjust an electric bell, replace electric lamps, shades and fuses

4) Replace a washer of a tap

5) Sharpen a knife

6) Attend to a blocked gutter or waste pipe

7) Sew a button or a badge to a shirt neatly

8) Oil and adjust sewing machine, cycle or similar item

9) Repair gate or fence

10) Darn a small hole in a sock

11) Know how to maintain, clean a gas or a kerosene cooker

12) Sharpen a saw or a coconut scraper

13) Wash and iron a shirt

14) Polish doors and furniture

15) Wax and polish a floor of a house

WORLD ENVIRONMENT -JA-11 (Corresponding badge for over 14 1/2 none) Objective: - Explain and demonstrate his knowledge on nature and the importance of preserving

nature.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS AN INTERNATIONAL BADGE

You should start this only after you have completed the Environment Protection 1-3 in the

Progressive scheme.

1) A) Explore an area of approximately ½ KM square and prepare a note on places where

water is retained. E.g. Water inside buildings, water in toilet systems

B) Now have a brief discussion with the examiner about the places where you

discovered water and expand the discussion as follows

a) How does the water that you discovered fit into the water cycle?

b) How is water useful to us?

c) How does water help plants and animals?

d) What happens to the water before it comes to our homes? What happens to water

that is discarded from our homes?

2) a) Select an item from nature and draw a picture of that item b) Create a picture or other work of art using natural things. Please make sure that you do not harm any animals, insects or the environment when doing this.

3.) Have a basic understanding of native species of animals within a radius of one KM and Discuss with the examiner if any of them are threatened due to changes in the environment

3) Discuss with the examiner the harmful effects that would incur to us, to the environment and other animals due to use of harmful agricultural chemicals.

4) Discuss with the examiner how you could practically use the 5R method. i.e. Refuse- Unnecessary wrappings, leaflets, plastic bags etc. Repair – clothes, electrical items, etc. Reduce- waste, buy only things that you really need Reuse - Purchase second hand things, give away things that you would not use etc. Recycle- whenever possible buy only things that you could recycle, recycle when Whenever possible

5) a) Discuss with the examiner about the effect of natural disasters on humans E.g. Storms or Cyclones, Droughts, Landslides, Tsunami, Wild fires, Insect plagues, Health epidemic etc. b) Discuss with the examiner how you can prepare for the safety of yourself, and the neighbors, from such possible disasters

Messenger of Peace SA-12 (Corresponding badge for over 14 1/2 none) Objective: - Demonstrate action taken by him to create peace by helping others, and making

others happy

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS AN INTERNATIONAL BADGE

You could start the work for this, only after completing the Good Habits 1, 2, and 3 in the Awards scheme . Please follow the 3 steps as given below. The examiner for this would be the ADC Programme of the District. Step 1. Locating the web site and entering data

Go to www.scout.org web site in the internet. For this you may ask for the help of your parents, Scout Master, the A.D.C.(Prog.) of your District or any other person who knows about the internet. Now you must register here giving your e mail address. Step 2. Carry out a service project This should have a minimum of 5 man hours. Please seek the help and advice of your Scout Master about doing this project Step 3. Enter details about your project and photographs in the internet Now enter (Upload) a brief description about your project, with a photograph or two in the scout.org web site under your name. Please remember to enter the number of Man hours that you worked in the correct place. Also enter in the world map shown there, where you did this project in Sri Lanka

B. CAMP CRAFT GROUP

CAMPER- JB-1(Corresponding badge for over 14Yrs 6 months – SB-1 Camp Warden)

Objective: - Demonstrate the knowledge and skills in basic camping

1.) Know the normal requirements in regard to :-

(a) Personal kit for a week’s camp

(b) Personal kit for a week end hike , camp or cruise

(c) The equipment and rations and menu for a week end Patrol Camp or hike or

cruise(7 Scouts). Demonstrate the packing of his personal kit in rucksack or kit bag.

2.) Either know the principal points to look for when selecting a Patrol or troop camp site,

and describe with rough plan how he would lay out the Patrol camp with reference to

tent, kitchen, sanitation etc. OR know how to select an anchorage, mooring or berth for a

rowing or sailing vessel or a sea going vessel.

3.) Have a knowledge of camping standards

4.) Make and show the following knots in use.

Slip Reef, Double Sheet bend,, Figure of eight, Bowline on a bight, Manharness hitch.

Pitch, strike and pack and know how to take care of a Patrol tent, and construct a Camp

Latrine. Show that he can carry out simple tent repairs.

5) While living in a camp, cook all meals for himself for 24 hours to the satisfaction of the

examiner. While in camp he must make satisfactory arrangements for storing of food

and disposal of refuse

6) Have camped in tent with a Troop or Patrol for a total of not less than 15 nights

COOK- JB-2(Corresponding badge for over 14Yrs 6 months – SB-2 Master Cook)

Objective: - Demonstrate the skill in basic cooking in camp

1.) Make a properly equipped camp kitchen for a Patrol, with open fire. And cook

thereon a balanced three course meal( Which may be breakfast) or rice and two

curries, or Vadai and sambol and make tea or coffee.

2.) Know how to store provisions in an hygienic manner and bring proof that he has

cooked satisfactorily for a Patrol in camp, for not less than one complete day.

3.) Make two of the following:- Milk rice, rotti, pancake, twist

WOODCRAFTSMAN- JB-3(Corresponding badge for over 14Yrs 6 months – SB-3 Naturalist)

Objective: - Demonstrate the knowledge and skill in basic woodcraft

1.) Keep a woodcraft diary for six months giving records with dates and places of not less than 10 birds, 10 plants, 10 trees, 10 butterflies or moths, and a short account of other animals which have been seen; and illustrate the records with pencil sketches or photographs, carbon impressions or pressed specimens of leaves etc.

2.) Make a collection of 20 different species of flowers, ferns, grasses, giving names, places and dates, and recognize them as well and give a short description of 5 of the specimens OR Make a collection of photographic or carbon impressions or sketches or plaster casts of leaves of 20 trees and 5 shrubs giving names, places and dates, and recognize them. OR Make 15 sketches of animals or birds from life, and give a brief description of their habitat, eating habits etc. OR Keep a simple aquarium for three months, stocked with specimens collected by him, and discuss his observations with the examiner.

PIONEER- JB-4(Corresponding badge for over 14Yrs 6 months – SB-4 Senior Pioneer) Objective: - Demonstrate the skill in doing simple Pioneering work 1.) Demonstrate with ropes etc. a) A Spanish Windlass b) A Handy Billy c) Sail

maker’s whipping. e) Long splice f) Two types of holdfasts for different types of soil.

2.) Know the knots and lashings up to and including the District Commissioner’s Cord.

3.) Supervise the construction of either a simple bridge of more than 12 feet in length or a

raft to carry himself and another Scout.

4.) Construct a flagstaff from three staves using sheer end to end(Round) lashings

5.) Make a Turk’s head woggle.

BACKWOODSMAN- JB-5(Corresponding badge for over 14Yrs 6 months – SB-4 Senior

Pioneer))

Objective: - Demonstrate the skill in cooking without utensils and improvising equipment in

camp

1) Make a satisfactory shelter for two people, using natural material, and sleep alone or

with another Scout for at least one night

2) Prepare and cook without utensils, or cook in clay 3 types of food

3) Demonstrate three of the following :-

a) Improvised methods of moving injured persons having due regard to their safety and

comfort.

b) Climb a tree to a height of at least 20 feet from the ground and lash the foundation

spars of a lookout post

c) Row a boat, paddle a canoe pole a punt for about ½ K.M.

d) Construct a gadget or a sundial to find the true north

e) Any method of purifying water and of straining muddy water

JUNIOR QUARTER MASTER (JB-6) (Corresponding badge for Over14 1/2 :- Quarter Master-

SB-6)

Objective: - Demonstrate basic skills in Quarter mastering

01. Show the knowledge and ability of proper storage of Pans, rope, knives, axes etc. and show

that you do practically

02. Demonstrate your knowledge about the storage of different types of fuel safely

03. Know how to effect minor repair equipment used for cooking, how to clean them, and

store them safely

04. Prepare a menu for a one day Patrol camp, and show a chart giving the prices of the food

items that you would use there

05. Be able to maintain a record of equipment issued and received from the Scout Room

06. Cleanliness and proper order is a sign of a good Quarter Master. Explain to the examiner

how you do that in the Troop or Patrol.

C . EDUCATION GROUP

READER- JC-1(Corresponding badge for over 14Yrs 6 months – SC-1 Bookman)

Objective: - Show the interest in reading books, and how to look after them

1) Provide the examiner, prior to the test, a list of at least 12 books that he has read during

the past 12 months. (Not more than 3 books from any one author.) This should exclude

school text books, but should include fiction as well as nonfiction. It should also include

at least 2 books on National heroes of Sri Lanka

2) Discuss those books with the examiner and explained why he had selected them, his

order of preference with reasons, and answer questions on the contents of the books

3) Explain to the examiner how books should be cared for.

4) Write a precise (of not more than 200 words) on one of the selected books

SPEAKER- JC-2(Corresponding badge for over 14Yrs 6 months – SC-2 Orator)

Objective: - Demonstrate basic skills necessary for a speaker

1.) Recite a piece of good prose and some lines of verse suitable to his age and interests

2.) Make a 5 minute speech on a subject chosen by himself

3.) Read aloud a piece of prose selected by the examiner, who will judge for diction,

emphasis and speed

4.) Take part in a discussion with one or two other Scouts on a subject chosen by himself

from a list provided by the examiner, 14 days earlier.

SCHOLAR- JC-3(Corresponding badge for over 14Yrs 6 months – SC-3 Senior Scholar)

Objective: - Demonstrate the skill and interest in academical work at school

1.) Present evidence that he has scored more than 50% in all the subjects that he is studying

and over 60% in at least 3 of the subjects at the school examination held for one year

proceeding the date of his being examined for the badge.(Report books to be made

available to the examiner)

2.) Produce exercise books of at least 3 subjects to prove that he has maintained his books

in good condition and has done his work neatly, methodically and in good handwriting.

3.) Show that he can use a dictionary, an encyclopedia, and an atlas.

4.) Satisfy the examiner that he has a reasonably good general knowledge according to his

age and grade(Class) that he attends at school.

5.) Produce evidence with a letter from the class teacher that he has been regular and

punctual to school during the calendar year, has been of good behavior and has shown

loyalty to the school

SCRIBE- JC-4(Corresponding badge for over 14Yrs 6 months – SC-4 Clerk)

Objective: - Demonstrate the skill in general writing and also taking downs minutes at a

meeting

1) Have good hand writing. Be able to write fast in good legible letters

2) Write from memory on a theme given verbally for five minutes.

3) Write a notice convening a meeting (indicating the agenda)and show the ability to write

minutes of a meeting correctly

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY JC- 5 (Corresponding badge for over 14 1/2 :- Management Information Technology-SC-5)

Objective: - Demonstrate and explain basic skill in operating a computer

Be able to name the” input” and “Out put “devices. 1. Be able to create and save a simple document (MS Word or any other similar

application) as given by the examiner. 2. Be able to change font, make them Bold, high light, etc. as appropriate 3. Be able to cut copy and paste text. 4. Be able to create and save a simple spread sheet, ( MS Excel or any other similar

application ) as given by the examiner. 5. Be able to use formulas to perform simple arithmetic functions such as adding,

subtracting, multiplying and dividing. 6. Be able to make fonts bold/italic/underline 7. Be able to cut, copy and paste cells 8. Be able to create and save a presentation (MS Power Point, or any other similar

application) as given by the examiner. JUNIOR JOURNALIST (JC-6) (Corresponding badge for over14 1/2 Journalist Senior-SC-6)

Objective: - Be able to explain basically different fields of mass media, and be able to do basic

work on media as a journalist.

1) Write an imaginary news item for a Media that you prefer (e.g. - news paper/

Radio/Television) about any Project organized by your Scout Group or school. Please

note that the public has to be informed through your news item and the important

aspects of the event to be included.

Objective: - Show a basic skill in one type of hand working skills, and the care of the tools

used.

1.) Show the examiner that he has regularly worked at one of the following for at least six

months; book binding; rattan work ;wood work ; leather work ; metal work ; fret work ;

printing ; tailoring ; or any other handiwork the examiner would accept as equivalent to

the one4s listed.

2.) He should be able to handle tools and/ or the raw material with ease in the handwork

that he has chosen.

3.) He should have an elementary knowledge and a practical experience of the handwork

that he has chosen

4.) He should produce at least one item in the hand work field that he has selected in the

presence of the examiner. His workmanship should be neat.

5.) He should know how to take care of the tools and material used in his handiwork.

6.) Explain to the examiner any precautions that one should take to prevent injuries.

CAMERAMAN- JK-3(Corresponding badge for over 14Yrs 6 months – SK-3- Photographer)

Objective: - Demonstrate the basic skill and the knowledge to take good quality photographs

1.) Take any photograph of wild life e.g. bird’s nest, trees, etc. ,three photographs of

interiors, three landscapes and three photographs of persons who would not be aware

that the photograph is being taken

2.) Discuss 12 photographs supplied by the examiner and arrange them in order of merit,

as they appeal to him, giving his reasons.

ENERGY MANAGER- JK-4(Corresponding badge for over 14Yrs 6 months – SK-6-

Energy Conservator)

Objective: - Demonstrate the basic skill and the knowledge energy conservation

1.) Prepare an article of about 200 words, which can create an awareness in the society about one source of energy out of the Primary Energy Sources , generally used in the homes in Sri Lanka. You may use reference material in the preparation of this.

2.) Explain to the examiner the difference between renewable and non renewable energy sources.

3.) Discuss with the examiner the reasons for the world energy crisis. The Scout should read up the necessary reference material prior to this.

4.) Discuss with the examiner, steps that could be taken at home to minimize the wastage of energy.

L. HOBBIES GROUP

STAMP COLLECTOR- JL-1(Corresponding badge for over 14Yrs 6 months – SL-1-

Philatelist)

Objective:-Show an active interest in collecting stamps of different countries

1.) Collect not less than 1,000 stamps from at least 20 different countries, in good

condition.

2.) Neatly mount and arrange his collection systematically.

3.) Describe what is depicted in 12 stamps selected by the examiner.

4.) Explain what is meant by 5 out of 8 common terms chosen by the examiner.

JUNIOR COLLECTOR- JL-2(Corresponding badge for over 14Yrs 6 months – SL-2-

Outstanding Collector)

Objective:-Demonstrate a basic interest in collecting items as a hobby

1.) The Scout should by his own effort, collect any ONE of the following items (the

minimum number of different kinds is indicated within the brackets), mount them in a

suitable manner and neatly label them. Specimens from foreign countries may be

accepted.:- Match box labels(20), Food can labels (50), Picture post cards (50),

Feathers (50), Badges (75), bottle Covers/Stoppers(50), The Examiner may accept

JUNIOR HAPPY HOME- JM-1(Corresponding badge for over 14Yrs 6 months – SL-1-

Senior Happy Home)

Objective:- Demonstrate how the Scout helps the parents at home.

Examiner …….. A suitable person acquainted with family counseling and interested in

Duration……Three months after passing the Group Scout Master’s Award. The Scout

should start on this badge only after passing the Group Scout master’s Award and will be

tested for it three months after.

1.) Maintain a log for three months as a Junior Scout after passing his group scout

3.) The Scout Master whenever possible visits the scout at home and satisfies himself on

A. PUBLIC SERVICE GROUP

INTERPRETER- SA-1(Corresponding badge for under 14Yrs 6 months – JA-1- Linguist)

Objective: - Be able to show a fairly good skill in two languages other than the Scout’s Own language.

Pass the following tests in any language other than his own.

1.) Carry on a conversation lasting 15 minutes. The conversation to include some of the

words in the basic Scout vocabulary such as the words for Scout, Patrol, Camp, tent,

camp fire, Troop etc.

2.) Write a letter of at least 300 words, dealing with one of the several topics given by

the examiner.

3.) Read aloud intelligibly, and give an approximate translation (without the help of a

dictionary) of a paragraph of average difficulty from a book, news paper or a

periodical.

PUBLIC HEALTH- SA-2(Corresponding badge for under 14Yrs 6 months – JA-2- Missioner)

Objective: - Be able to explain what Public health generally means and be able to use such

knowledge to safe guard health of campers at a camp.

1.) Pass or have passed the Missioner Badge

2.) Know what is meant by public health- what it is and how it has developed.

3.) Have a general knowledge of the functions of the human body and how it works

4.) Have a knowledge of the modern methods of disease prevention

Objective: - Be able to demonstrate the skill in using equipment used to extinguish fires, and

explain how he could be of use in controlling a serious fire.

1.) Pass or have passed the Fire Fighter badge

2.) Have a knowledge of the history and traditions of the Fire Service, how it is organized

and functions in your area.

3.) Know the dangers and understand the fire precautions at home, relating to wood fires,

kerosene stoves, electricity, electric appliances, fuses, petrol, storage of material,

fireworks, candles, bottle lamps ,etc. Know the dangers of fire at camp and what

precautions should be taken .

4.) Explain the methods of rescue used in different situations. Explain and demonstrate

crawling with an unconscious person, rescue by ladder and lowering by line.

5.) Demonstrate how to lift and walk with an unconscious person using the Fireman’s lift.

6.) Know the causes of different types of fires, and how to deal with an outbreak of fire.

Know and demonstrate the functions and proper use f different types of fire

extinguishers. Demonstrate the use of a mat for beating or smothering a fire

7.) Demonstrate how to use a fire hose, including connecting it to a hydrant

8.) Be able to answer questions on the workings of a Fire Station and the use of equipment

carried on fire engines etc.

LEADING SIGNALLER- SA-4(Corresponding badge for under 14Yrs 6 months – JA-4-

Objective: - Demonstrate the skill in Morse and Semaphore signaling, including speed and

accuracy.

1.) Send and receive a message of not less than 150 letters at rate 9 in Semaphore(45

letters per minute)

2.) Send and receive a similar message in Morse:- on buzzer at rate 8(40 letters per

minute). By torch or lamp at rate 6(30 letters per minute)

3.) Demonstrate that he knows a recognized procedure when sending and receiving

messages

Objective: - Be able to use a bicycle or any other vehicle with regard to safety of himself and

others, carry out simple repairs.

1.) Own or have the use of a bicycle, scooter, motor cycle or a car. .

2.) Demonstrate that he knows the high way code and be able to read a road map.

3.) Be able to carry out running repairs to the bicycle, scooter, motor cycle or the car.

4.) Write a message from dictation, and deliver it at a point at least five KM away indicated

only by map reference.

5.) Understand what action he must take in case of an accident, such as reporting to

parents, police etc.

6.) Know first aid up to Group Scout Master’s Award

PATH FINDER- SA-6(Corresponding badge for under 14Yrs 6 months – JA-6- Guide)

Objective: - Show is ability and interest in exploring areas not known to the Scout previously.

1.) Pass or have passed the Guide Badge

2.) Demonstrate that he has thoroughly explored an area of at least 2 KM radius by

submitting logs of expeditions for two of the following specific objectives

a.) Following all foot paths, and waterways shown in past and present maps, and

reporting on their existence and present condition

b.) Prepare a full report on agriculture and industries of the locality and the use to

which the land is put.

c.) Making a full report on the history of the locality, giving particulars and history of

antiquities and places of special interest and the extent to which it has changed

or altered by modern developments including advertisements etc.

d.) Prepare a full report on soil , trees shrubs, flowers birds and animals found in the

area.

e.) Making a full report on not less than five KM of navigable river or canal, including

tides, channels , shoals or mud banks, local rules and customs and any

regulations affecting the use of waterways by the Scouts . The report to include

full details of two camp sites adjacent to mooring places in the area.

NOTE: The logs submitted will give the distances covered and be accompanied by

explanatory sketches, maps and photographs.

AMBULANCE- SA-7(Corresponding badge for under 14Yrs 6 months – JA-7- First Aide)

Objective: - Demonstrate first aid treatment for fractures, internal bleeding, poisoning and

stoppage of circulation of blood; demonstrate methods of transporting a casualty

1) Pass or have passed the first Aid Badge

2) Know how to diagnose, and demonstrate the treatment for all fractures to limbs and for

dislocated jaw

3) Know to identify basic internal bleeding and understand the importance of treatment for

shock and taking the patient to a doctor without delay.

4) Understand the treatment for choking including abdominal thrust for different age groups.

5) Demonstrate methods of carrying a patient using two hand seat, three hand seat, four

hand seat, and the fireman’s lift. Demonstrate two other methods of transporting a patient,

when alone.

6) Know how to deal with a case of suspected poisoning.

7) Competently lead a team of Scouts to deal with an accident staged by the Examiner. Such

incident to include all items covered in First aid Badge. These incidents to be conducted in

as realistic a manner as possible. All actions proper to the situation must be actually taken

and the Examiner will test for coolness, resourcefulness, correct action (including message

to the parents and doctor) and proper treatment at all stages.

8) Demonstrate CPR, and Recovery Position. Under no circumstance should a living person be

used to demonstrate CPR.

9) Make an effective improvised stretcher and demonstrate how to use it.

RESCUER- SA-8(Corresponding badge for under 14Yrs 6 months – JA-8- Life Saver)

Objective: - Demonstrate the skill in doing rescue work in water, and the Scout’s knowledge of

basic first aid necessary in rescuing a drowning person.

.

1.) Perform in water four methods of rescue (one to be “ uni grip”) and three of release from

the clutch of a drowning person. The drowning subject to be approximately the size of

the rescuer, and to be carried at least 15 meters by each method .

2.) Dive from the surface to a depth at least five feet and bring up a stone, brick or any

similar object of not less than 2 Kilos in weight at least two out of three times.

3.) Swim 50 meters in shirt and shorts, and undress without touching ground

4.) Throw a life line within one yard of a small object 15 meters away. The thrower to be up

to waist in water.

5.) Lead a team to deal with emergencies as given in the Life Saver Badge.

6.) Demonstrate CPR and recovery position.( A living person should not be used to

demonstrate CPR)

on an expedition of 48 hours.

1.) Pass or have passed the Coxswain badge

2.) Be able to reads a chart, plot a position by three methods and lay off a course making

allowances for variations and deviation of the compass and tidal set

3.) Know the different types of Buoys, light houses and light vessels in general use, and the

usual danger, storm and fog signals. Discuss Beaufort wind and Sea Scales

4.) Understand the use of a Barometer in fore casting weather

5.) Know the proper gear that should be carried in a sailing boat to ensure the safety of the

vessel under all conditions.

6.) Organise and take charge of of a Patrol expedition of 48 hours minimum duration in a

boat. Journey to a point at least 10 KM from start and return Keep a log showing course

and distances. Route to be prepared by candidate with proper reference to tides etc.

7.) Read mariner’s Compass marked in points and degrees and be able to estimate roughly

(using chart and tide table) the depth of water and state of the tide.

8.) Demonstrate how to take soundings

HANDYMAN- SA-10(Corresponding badge for under 14Yrs 6 months – JA-10- Jobman)

Objective: - Be able to do minor repairs and renovations etc. at home.

Be able to do at least 10 of the following, 6 of which should be demonstrated

a) Install and know how to detect deflects in fluorescent lights

b) Glaze a window both in wood and iron frames

c) White wash or paint a ceiling or a room

d) Change the tyre of a car

e) Repair defective plastering

f) Effect minor repairs to furniture such as broken castors, table and chair legs,and

upholstery

g) Remove parts and service a Kerosene or gas cooker

h) Clean and polish a car

i) Wash and iron a shirt and a pair of trousers

j) Mix concrete and effect simple repairs with it

k) Repair children’s’ toys

l) Know how to polish various types of floors e.g. wood, cement, terrazzo, linoleum etc.

Objective: - Demonstrate the knowledge on basic law of the country and about the general

geography etc, and how the Scout has taken action to help elder or handicapped persons.

1.) Prepare two maps showing a) The boundaries of the electoral District where he lives b)

The boundaries of the local authority and those of its wards in the area that he lives

Objective: - Demonstrate the knowledge in the importance of the conservation of nature.

1.) Be able to describe the effect on wild life resulting from: fire, over growing, unwise forest

practices, soil erosion, and water pollution.

2.) Give a talk for 5 minutes or write an essay of about 500 words on “The need for

conservation for the survival of life on Earth”.

3.) Understand the importance of wild life and nature reserves

4.) Discuss with the examiner the ways in which he could and is helping conservation in his

town or village

5.) Do one of the following:-

a) Select a species of endangered wild life in our country and discuss with the

examiner ways and means of protecting it

b) Cary out or assist with a bank erosion control or other improvement project on a

stream, pond or tank etc..

c) Help carry out a conservation project on a farm, or Scout camp site

6.) Do one of the following:-

a.) Build and set out in suitable places at least 3 nestling boxes

b.) Visit a project built for flood control. or for increasing flow in a river during a drought

or for irrigation purposes and write a report on that.

c.) Find out what happens to domestic waste and industrial waste in his community and

write a report on 1.) The methods used to purify water and prevent pollution or

2.) Action that should be taken to prevent polluting the waterways.

7.) Name three causes for floods, and three methods of controlling floods

B. PUBLIC SERVICE GROUP

Objective: - Demonstrate the capabilities as an experienced camper according to the Scout’s age.

1.) Pass or have passed the Camper Badge

6.) Have helped satisfactorily at a permanent camp site for not less than six nightsor where

this is not possible, have taken sole charge of a camp for a week end. Such camp to

have not less than eight campers and to be visited by the examiner.

MASTER COOK- SB-2(Corresponding badge for under 14Yrs 6 months – JB-2- Cook)

Objective: - Be able to select and purchase correct ingredients and cook properly for a Patrol

1.) Cook for a Patrol or family of seven, both in camp, and indoors, which may include

roasting boiling frying, making rotti sweets cakes, puddings, drinks, and pickles. Prepare

and serve food punctually and hot following niceties and good manners

2.) Know how to buy food select substitutes, draw up priced and balanced & sound menus

to include quantities required for a camp of a week end for at least two Patrols. Limit for

the cost of catering will be decided by the examiner.

3.) Know how to prepare a hot meal(two items) and a hot drink without utensils except a

small can or a saucepan.

NATURALIST- SB-3(Corresponding badge for under 14Yrs 6 months – JB-3- wood craftsman)

Objective: - Demonstrate the interest in the whole field of nature

1.) Show evidence of an intelligent interest in the whole field of nature with particular regard

to one of the Following: - a.) Trees & shrubs b.) Wild flowers c.) Bird life d.) Local wild

animals e.) Ferns and grasses f.) Rocks & fossils g)Sea shore or pond life h) Butterflies

moths & other insects- produce specimens , log books etc. as the pursuit may warrant

1.) Complete an adventure journey as a member of a Patrol in which he shall play a leading

part. The journey, which may be short in length, must include at least five incidents such

as rescue from fire or heights, compass work, night work, decoding, water incidents etc.

2.) Be reasonably proficient in two of the following. Each of the two must be selected from

different groups as under a.) Boxing, fencing wrestling judo, Karate etc. b.) Rowing

roller skating, sailing, etc. c.) Swimming, diving d.) Gymnastics, tumbling etc. e.)

Rock climbing, rope spinning f.) Track athletics, field events, cross country running

etc. g.) Rifle shooting, archery , darts, etc. The examiner may substitute similar

activities as the situation warrants

3.) Be able to perform three of the following: - a.) Climb a tree to a height of 30 ft. from the

ground b.) Vault a fence two thirds his own height. C.) throw a sixty foot line to fall

between two pegs , four feet apart at a distance of 50 feet twice out of three times

d.) Swim 20 meters wearing clothes e.) Climb a rope to a height of 15 feet from the

ground

4.) Make a journey of at least 20 KM on foot or by boat, with not more than two other

Scouts. Route must be one with which the Scout is not familiar. Sleep out, using only kit

carried in rucksack. The examiner may set the candidate one or two tasks, which require

a specific report, but no general log of journey required. The journey must be such as

will constitute a definite test of determination, initiative and self reliance

1. Should have served as a Quarter Master in a Scout Group/Troop/Patrol for a minimum period of 2 months OR Should have been the Quarter Master for a Pack Holiday /Patrol camp or a Troop camp lasting at least 2 nights.

2. Be able to demonstrate how food and equipment be stored at a camp 3. Explain how tents, cooking utensils, rope and other equipment should be stored and

prove that he practically uses these methods 4. Prepare a menu for a Group, Troop Patrol or a Pack for a 48 hour camp. Discuss it

with the examiner 5. Demonstrate the ability to prepare a balanced meal at a camp, and prepare a list of

prices of food items to be used therein. 6. Be able to do two of the following

a) Repairing and storing a tent

b) Disposal and proper management of refuse at camp

c) Knowledge about maintaining a proper inventory

d) How to maintain kitchen equipment rust free

e) Show a list of tools that you would take to camp to repair damaged

equipment. Demonstrate your ability to use them and look after them

f) Cleanliness and proper order is a sign of a good Quarter Master. Explain to

the examiner how you do that in the Troop or Patrol.

C . EDUCATION GROUP

country and the knowledge about different world organisations

1) Have an elementary knowledge of the geography, history and the people of at least

three countries other than his own.

2) Have corresponded with(Social Media accepted) regularly for not less than an year with

a Scout from another country (either individually or as a part of a Troop link up)

3) Have some knowledge of the organisation and the activities of the WOSM and in

particular the Asia Pacific Region

4) Have done at least two of the following :-

a) Camped or hiked at least two days with a Scout of another country. Produce records

of this to the examiner

b) Visited another country and called on Scouts there, or attended a foreign Jamboree

c) Carry out a Shramadana or any other community service project of at least 5 hours. This should be done with the Scouts of your Troop. Submit a brief report.

the further study of this art medium c.) examples of masters which he has seen or

books which he has studies, and his opinion of these work.

MUSICIAN- SF-2(Corresponding badge for under 14Yrs 6 months – JF-2- Music Maker)

Objective: - Demonstrate the skill in singing or playing a musical instrument, and explain his

knowledge about works of musicians.

1.) Sing effectively a solo or play a tune on a musical instrument suitable for a camp fire

2.) Be an active and a regular member of a choir music society , a Scout band etc. OR be

regular following music classes for over a period of one year and has reached

proficiency according to his age.

3.) Be able to read and understand musical notations used by either western or oriental

musicians

4.) Recognise four out of six tunes hummed or played by the examiner

5.) Discuss with the examiner the works of his favourite singer or musician and give good

reasons for his choice

Objective: - Demonstrate the knowledge and skill in Drama and specifically the Scout’s skill in

1.) Have taken part in a full length drama or one act play before public, school or Scout

audience and have attained a reasonably good standard in acting OR have acted an

important part in a school or Scout stage performance (which may include Gang shows)

2.) Recite to the satisfaction of the examiner, from memory, with full dramatic effects, a

passage of not less than 20 lines (about150 words) taken from a standard dramatic

work.

3.) Have read at least 2 Standard dramas written by eminent .dramatists and be able to

convince the examiner that he has understood them.

2.) Take part in 3 hikes , during each of which a kit is carried and the Scout sleeps out.

Distance of two hikes to be at least 10 KM each and the other to be not less than 30 KM,

with two nights camping out. Logs of high standard to be produced.

3.) Select a route for a 15 KM hike from a OS map not necessarily of his own district, giving

reasons for his choice of route.

4.) Select three areas of approximately 1 Sq. KM from a map, where a good hike camp

should be possible, giving reasons for the choice of the area.

5.) Make an article of hiking kit, such as tent, sleeping bag, rucksack, a bag or other

container in which to pack pans, food toilet requisites etc.

6.) Show a knowledge of personal hygiene, care of feet and foot gear.

SURVEYER- SH-3(Corresponding badge for under 14Yrs 6 months – JH-3- Map Maker )

Objective: - Demonstrate the ability to understand maps , in making maps and using equipment

used for surveying

1.) Pass or have passed the map maker badge. Draw a simple cross section from an OS

map( Line chosen to include varied features, gradients etc.)

2.) Have worked as a member of a Surveyor’s Party for a total of five days directly assisting

a surveyor.

3.) Be familiar and be able to manipulate the Theodolite and other instruments used by a

surveyor.

METEOROLOGIST- SH-5(Corresponding badge for under 14Yrs 6 months – JH-5-

Weatherman)

Objective: - Demonstrate how weather maps are made, equipment used to gauge and predict

weather.

1.) Pass or have passed paragraphs. 3 & 4 of the weatherman badge

2.) Keep from his own observations, a daily record of weather for one month

3.) Explain the purpose and the principles of the simple thermometer, wet and dry- bulb

thermometer, barometer, and an anemometer.

4.) Know how synoptic weather maps are produced and be able to understand a simplified

version of such a map, such as printed in newspapers.

5.) Understand the following : relative humidity, dew point, isobar, millibar, isotherm, Buys-

Ballot’s law, cold front, warm front, and illustrate any explanations with diagrams.

6.) Construct a wind-vane, and a simple rain gauge.

7.) Understand at least three different ways in which clouds are formed.

SENIOR EXPLORER-SH-6(Corresponding badge for under 14Yrs 6 months – JH-6- Explorer)

Objective: - Demonstrate the skill in planning, organizing and executing long hikes and

expeditions

1.) Pass or have passed the hiker or the Master Canoeist badge

2.) Take part in an expedition with not less than 2 and not more than 4 Scouts. The

expedition may be on foot, bicycle, or boat

3.) The expedition must be planned to extend over at least four consecutive days(with 3

nights out), spent away from home, under canvass, rough shelter or open. All necessary

equipment and food must be taken and all meals be prepared by the members of the

expedition.

All Scouts of the expedition will take an equal part in the planning arrangements before

and during the expedition but it is not necessary that all participants should be under

test.

A log of the expedition must be kept by each member of the party, having previously

agreed between themselves a different emphasis for each log.- e.g.:- Weather,

Geography, History, Archeology, Botany , Ornithology etc.

The route and the special log subjects must have the prior approval of the examiner.

The expedition, whether on foot or otherwise must be a test of determination, courage,

physical endurance and a high degree of cooperation among those taking part.

An expedition on foot should cover at least 80 KM.

An expedition by water will cover at least 80 KM and the log will cover such points as the

state of the river conditions, of banks, obstructions to navigation, currents etc.

An expedition by bicycle will cover at least 150 KM , as far as possible off Class A roads.

ARCHEOLOGIST- SH-7(Corresponding badge for under 14Yrs 6 months –none)

Objective: - Demonstrate the Scout’s interest and skill in prehistory, archeology, law relating to

archeology and about preserving archeological sites

1.) Have a knowledge of ONE of the periods of human pre history ( e.g Palaeolithic,

Mesolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age etc.) and have a basic knowledge of the cultures of the

people of the period selected

2.) Show an understanding of the importance of preservation of ancient monuments, the

necessity of reporting finds, and the danger of digging without expert supervision.

3.) Have a general knowledge of the methods used by archaeologists for discovering and

recognizing sites(e.g. field work, aerial photographs, etc.) and a knowledge of the

down stream, and some other special strokes, such as sweep, sculling and J stroke.

3.) Have a general knowledge of canoeing waterways, and a general understanding of right

of way, grading of difficulty, and sources of information.

4.) Know what equipment is needed for a canoe- camping expedition and how to stow them.

Take a party in a canoe camping expedition of 20 -30 KM on inland waterways, with two

nights camping.

J. AIRMAN GROUP

AIRCRAFT CONSTRUCTOR- SJ-1(Corresponding badge for under 14Yrs 6 months – JJ-1- Air

craft Modeller )

Objective: - Show the skill and interest in air craft models, construction of them and flying same.

1.) Make any two of the following, one of which shall be of Scout’s own design and is to be

accompanied by his working drawings (The use of kit is permitted)

a.) Rubber band driven model , to fly for 60 seconds

b.) Glider( hand launched) to fly for 40 seconds

c.) Engine powered model to fly for 90 seconds

d.) Flying scale model to fly for 20 seconds

e.) Start his model and get it air borne in 5 minutes. Perform at least 15 laps

demonstrating his control of the model by performing such manoevres as are

Objective: - Demonstrate the ability to assemble a simple receiver, and the knowledge on radio

technology

1.) Posses a working knowledge of the principles of radio broadcast, transmission and

radio

2.) Assemble a simple receiver in temporary form and be able to draw a diagram of his lay

out, using correct technical symbols

3.) Have an elementary knowledge of how transistors and micro chips work.

4.) Have a basic knowledge of blue tooth technology, and how it is used in various

equipment that people use.

PHOTOGRAPHER- SK-3(Corresponding badge for under 14Yrs 6 months – JK-3- Cameraman)

Objective: - Demonstrate the ability to use a camera, and take good quality photographs

1.) Demonstrate his understanding of the mechanism of his camera, shutter speed, stops

and focusing device.

2.) a.) Show a knowledge of lighting of indoor and outdoor subjects

b) Discuss with examiner the use of accessories such as tripods, exposure meters,

filters etc.

3.) Discuss common faults in composition, exposure, etc. from specimens shown by the

examiner

4.) Take with any camera, three portraits, three landscapes, three pictures from unusual

angles. , three photographs of buildings of unusual architectural styles. One at least of

the above to be taken indoors.

5.) Show that he has begun to specialize in some particular aspect of photography (e.g.

portrait, movie, still life, Children, action etc.) Discuss with examiner, photographs and

techniques involved. Discuss with examiner photographs taken by Scout on the subject

of his specialization, covering a period of at least 3 months

ELECTRICIAN- SK-4(Corresponding badge for under 14Yrs 6 months – None)

Objective: - Demonstrate the ability to simple repairs to electric apparatus, and his knowledge

about the working of electricity.

1.) Have an elementary knowledge of the terms and measurements used in electrical work

2.) Make connections in electrical wiring and replace defective switches, lamp holdes etc.

3.) Make a simple electro magnet. Construct a Morse Buzzer set which can operate

between two rooms.

4.) Explain the difference between A.C and D.C.

5.) Explain the purpose of fuses and earthing and the dangers caused by improper

connections and the improper use of domestic electrical appliances.

6.) Know the action to be taken in case of electric shock

7.) Be able to read a domestic electricity meter and calculate cost of current consumed

since last reading.

Objective: - Demonstrate the skill in identifying minor faults in vehicles.

1.) Demonstrate that he understands the working of the internal combustion engine and

know the names and the functions of all the principal parts. Diagnose simple running

faults such as misfiring, choked jet,, incorrect mixture etc.

2.) Demonstrate Oil & Grease chassis points, attend to oil level in a gear box and axle, and

tap up the battery. Mend a puncture. Check order of firing, clean and test spark plugs

3.) Demonstrate how to change the car wheel correctly, and what precautions to be taken.

ENERGY CONSERVATOR- SK-6(Corresponding badge for under 14Yrs 6 months – JK-4

Energy Manager)

Objective: - Demonstrate the knowledge and interest in conserving energy

1.) “It is expected that all the countries in the world, will face a huge Energy Crisis by year 2025” Explain validity of this statement to the examiner using any reference material on Primary energy Sources.

2.) Using reference material, prepare a report on how energy as electricity & fuel for cooking is wasted when used by people in Sri Lanka.

3.) Using reference material suggests to the examiner methods that could be used to minimize the waste of energy as explained in no. 2 section above.

4.) Select at least 3 houses that use electricity, in your area, and conduct the under mentioned survey. a.) Get from the selected house holders, the way that they use electricity ((lights, cooking, fans,

refrigerator, radio, T.V. etc.) b.) Record the reading of the electricity meter at the beginning of the month. Using the

electricity bill record the number of units used during previous month. c.) Using the reference material create an awareness in the people of these selected homes

about the minimizing the wastage of energy. d.) Record the reading of the Electricity meter at the end of the month. e.) Calculate the number of Units consumed using the meter reading at the beginning of the

month and the present meter reading. f.) Compare this figure with the units used in the previous month, and submit the records to

the examiner.

L. HOBBIES GROUP

OUTSTANDING COLLECTOR- SL-2(Corresponding badge for under 14Yrs 6 months – JL-2-

Junior Collector)

Objective: - Demonstrate the interest in collecting specific items as a collector

1.) The Scout should over a period of at least 6 months through his own effort collect 50

different kinds of any on of the following items, mount them or assemble them in a neat

and logical manner and label them. (e.g. coins, head gear grains, seeds, shells, different

kinds of wood, stones clothing material, etc.) Any other items may be approved by the

examiner, provided that it is intelligently categorized and the Scout has a fairly good

knowledge on the specimens. The examiner may also use his discretion as to the

number of items collected, according to the Scouts environment and back ground.

2.) He should be able to recognize any specimen the examiner may select from his

collection and give a short talk on it.

3.) By explaining the source of each specimen he should be able to convince the examiner

that the collection was his own effort.

SENIOR HAPPY HOME- SM-1(Corresponding badge for under 14Yrs 6 months – JM-!- Junior

Happy Home )

Objective: - Demonstrate what the Scout does to help his parents, and his knowledge about his

basic family history

1.) Maintain a log book for a minimum of three months after completing the District

commissioner’s Award giving the following (or similar) responsibilities that he carried out

at home :-

• Helping parents, brothers, sisters, older relatives etc.

• Making the home beautiful

• Simple repairs to house

• Accompanying parents to visit relatives

• Assisting mother in preparing meals etc.

• Participating in family budget making

• Entertaining visitors

• Service rendered to neighbors

• Attending religious functions with parents.

2.) The family chart- The Senior Scout will draw a family chart giving all his relatives from

grandparents down to the 4th or 5th generation, to his nephews and nieces and in some

cases his grand nephews etc. this chart should be drawn on a large sheet of paper and

names clearly stated

3.) The Scout Master would when ever possible visit the home of the Scout and satisfy

himself on the accuracy of the Log record for this badge and the Family chart.

4.) The examiner examines the log and the family chart and discusses with him on the

following

• How he practices the 10th part of the Scout Law-“a scout is clean in thought, word

and deed” specially discussing his attitude towards sex.

• How he helps to make his home a happy place

• Any other problems that he wishes to discuss with the examiner

The examiner will counsel the Scout and will give him good advice for a decent living
