CHIDEOCK NEWS: NOVEMBER 2017 My wife Jane, and I, love walking! We almost invariably go for a long and strenuous walk on our weekly ‘Day Off’. Normally the walk lasts 3 – 4 hours, and includes a light lunch and drink at a convenient Pub. Over this year we have undertaken many walks on Dartmoor and along the South West Coastal footpath. We even managed to climb to the highest summits of Dartmoor, on ‘Yes Tor’ and ‘High Willhays – both a little under two thousand feet high. The views from the summits were wonderful – stretching west to Bodmin Moor, north to Exmoor, and east into the rest of Dartmoor. There are of course many positive benefits to walking: exercise for the body, de-stressing of the mind – and uplift for the spirit in places of raw and wild beauty. From a Christian perspective, experience of the beauties of the natural world leads me to a more profound experience of God’s character – His majesty, vastness, care and beauty. I encourage you to get out of your car, and take a good length of walk into the tremendous landscapes of the ‘South West’. We are blessed to have such wonders on our doorstep - it is sad not to enjoy them if we are physically able to do so. Our Parishes have a Walking Group that goes out on a reasonably local Walk on a Sunday afternoon, followed by a nice Tea at someone’s house! The next one is November 12th – phone me on 01297 443763 if you would like more information! We have also started to occasionally include a Country ‘Foraging’ Ramble as a prelude to a Sunday afternoon Service. The one we held at Wootton Fitzpaine recently was very successful – with many younger people joining us for “Forest Church”! St Giles Remembrance Sunday Service will be 10.45am at the War Memorial on 12th November, followed by a Village Service in the Church. Do join this act of remembrance if you can! Revd Stephen Skinner, Team Rector.

Short & Sweet On Sunday 3rd December at 11am there will be a special Short & Sweet village service at St Giles Church, with the theme "Getting ready for Christmas". Please bring something that reminds you of the "specialness" of Christmas--a decoration, a card or photo to share your memories with everyone. Please join us for a service which involves everyone of all ages and have fun! Children are especially welcome. Don't be shy, a warm welcome awaits you at St Giles. This short service will be followed by refreshments, so come along and join in the fun.

Chideock W.I. Report Report of 3rd October 2017

Story time for the W.I.? That’s different! On October 3rd.five members from “Story Traders” paid Chideock W.I. a visit. This thriving local group who meet regularly was formed eight years ago to give encouragement to budding authors. Although not competitive with each other, individuals do win competitions and the group gets involved with local projects such as museums and schools. The five visitors have recently published their first book, a collective work of short stories, poems and pieces of flash fiction entitled “Narrative Threads.” The theme throughout is “Rope” portraying the rope industry in Bridport. The book was runner up in a National competition. Then followed story time. Members were treated to short stories read by the authors. A personal favourite was a light frippery entitled “What goes around” featuring soap on a rope. One story, set in Seatown was called “the Smuggler’s Wife.” I think you would have heard a pin drop as the stories were read so skillfully by the people who created them. Some of the Story Traders work has been used for radio plays and also a film script. It is fascinating to realize the talent we have so close to home. Iris Jones Chideock W.I.

CHIDEOCK CHATTERS … I started ‘Chideock Chatters’ a while ago for women to get together, have a chat, a glass of wine and meet others. Whilst there are lots of groups meeting during the day, there wasn’t anything for working ladies or ladies who have other commitments in the day time. So we meet in the evenings! The group has been a success and we have a ‘get together’ in one of the local pubs or the village hall every 6 weeks or so.

If you would like to join in and come to a ‘get together’, please email or phone me and I will put you on the mailing list. [email protected] tel no. 01297 489996

Monday December 11 12.30 Out for Christmas lunch Nick Baker Nick would have been so touched by all the love and support you have shown me and our family over the past few weeks. He was a quiet man who didn't always show his emotions but he loved Chideock and his time here. Thank you. Hilary CHIDEOCK SOCIETY NEWS. The new format for our AGM turned out to be a very well attended and enjoyable event, preceded by a presentation of a wonderful new collection of old photos of Chideock taken in the early 1900's. They came from photographic plates found and developed by members of the long established Chideock Symes family and turned into a PowerPoint presentation by Antony Broad and Sal Robinson. Several former Chideock residents came and provided new information about the history of the village and a new piece of film has been donated about some of the buildings and their inhabitants. A 1998 film

Chideock Bypass Working Group update The Chideock Bypass Working Group event held at Chideock House on Saturday 14 October was a great success. The weather stayed kind to us and we had a good turnout, so a big thank you to all our supporters and we were delighted to meet some newcomers. The games were in the gazebo and most popular was Bar Skittles closely followed by Sjolen a Dutch version of shove ha'penny. The younger generation was represented by two toddlers who enjoyed the pitch and putt while the bagatelle was won by a lady in her 90s. On the popular information desk our new website http://www.chideockbypass.co.uk proved to be a great hit with many new subscribers - please take a look and consider joining our mailing list. From the website you can also follow the Group on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube - any pictures or videos of unusual traffic events are most welcome. We continue to lobby all our elected representatives, details are on the website. An UK Government and Parliament petition is now open seeking support to"Construct a bypass around Chideock, Dorset to relieve the traffic problems." You can sign the petition from the website or go direct to:https://petition..parliament.uk/petitions/202521

Bridport Choral Society appoints new Musical Director Bridport Choral Society is pleased to announce that it has appointed James Crawshaw as Musical Director. James is a highly experienced choral conductor and organist based in Dorchester and the Piddle Valley. Bridport Choral Society meets every Monday evening at Bridport United Reform Church Hall from 7.35 – 9.35 and always welcomes new members. There are no auditions, no need to be able to read music, just bring an enthusiasm for singing. Rehearsals are already underway for the Society’s Christmas Concert on Friday 15 December at St. Swithun’s Church, North Allington. More information about the choir can be found on the website: bridportchoral.wordpress.com Chideock Village Hall Chairman’s Annual Report 2016/2017

I am greatly saddened at the untimely passing of Nick Baker, he was due to stand down from our committee at this AGM as he felt he was unable to contribute to the life of the village hall as he wished to. He will be sorely missed and our thoughts are with Hillary who has also served the village hall over years. I am pleased to say no one else has stood down this year but we do need more people to join the committee. Another busy year has passed with the usual mix of successes and problems. So first of all the good things: 1. Our Treasurer has exceeded all expectation again this year and not allowed me to get out of control. This year as in 2016/2017 there was no deficit and again there was a very

10

small surplus, which has gone into the maintenance fund. This fund is ring-fenced so that it can only be spent on the building and not on day to day running costs. 2. We have spent over £35,500 this year in maintenance, repairs, projects and running costs. I will let Roger tell you more. 3. 2016/2017 has been a fantastic year for fundraising and once again I will let Roger give you the details. At the last AGM I made the comment, I know that there are people who keep asking “why can’t we see more being done”. Well I hope you can now see some of the work which has been undertaken for your village hall. a. The painting of the outside of the hall is nearly complete with thanks to Urban who

have carried out the work and to Jane Elliott who with her friends raised the money. b. The new front door has now been installed which I hope you all think is an

improvement on the old one. c. The new kitchen is fully working now. However there are some decorative things,

plus the door and hatch to be completed which we hope will be done mid-November. 4. The committee will increase the hall fees for this coming year in line with inflation, it would appear that none of our costs go down, so as unpopular as this may be we must maintain a realistic approach to managing our running costs and not allow the same situation to arise as when I took over as Chairman. 5. H&S is now an integral part of the running of this Hall, to ensure that everyone using it stays a safe as possible and this is an ongoing commitment. As a result of our H&S reviews we have installed a better and safer means of providing hot water for the making of tea & coffee. The fact that we take notice of H&S has helped to keep down the cost of our insurance again this year. 6. Bookings for the Hall from the Chideock community continue to be healthy and the facility remains much appreciated within the village. 7. The survey carried out on the hall in January this year found that as long as we keep up the maintenance there is a good 40 years of life left in the building, so it will outlast a lot of us. Problems still to be addressed: Improvement of the front entrance steps and address the H&S problem concerning our emergency exit at the end of the hall. We have taken this matter up with the PC. Thanks to: 1 Jeanette Smith who has once again done a sterling job in looking after our garden. 2 David Jones & Roger Carey without whose help the kitchen would be nowhere ready

for use. 3 Thanks to Jane, Gloria, Sue & Julia who have run the film night & community Café

which has been another great success. 4 My wife who has put up with me never being at home for most of the summer Richard A Benjamin Chairman

Chideock Village Hall Treasurers’ Report 23 Oct 17 I am pleased to report that once again we have a trading surplus at the end of our financial year 2016-2017. This surplus of £156 is after carrying out the major refurbishment of the kitchen and other improvements including new front doors and windows costing a grand total of £27500. All this was only made possible by the many grants that we lucky to obtain together with donations, too many to individually list. We also were very successful with fundraising events this year with Xmas Fair £330, Rummage sale £250, Dennis Brunsden’s New Zealand talk £330, Bev’s Garden Party £380, and the new event the Flower & Produce show £200 . Thanks go donations of £250 from Chideock WI and £300 from Bridport Round Table specifically towards the new dishwasher. Separately we had a grant of £4000 from the Gannet Foundation and substantial grants from Chideock Parish Council and Chideock Trust towards the kitchen. In addition we obtained grants of £500 from Axe Vale Festival, £1000 from Tesco Bags of Help and £1000 from Bridport Car Boot fund, all of which went towards replacing the new front doors and the meeting room windows. We still have other possible grants outstanding which we hope will come to fruition by the year end and will help towards paying for future hall improvements. All areas of hall hire generated more income than the previous year including a new event of the film night which has proved to be very successful. Also the Community Cafe which is not a fundraising event, has proved to be very successful and enjoyed by all, donating £175 to the funds. I am still concerned that we are at the mercy of the A35 and road closures whether for water works etc or just an accident. This is very difficult to budget for, so to maintain the viability of the hall, from January 1st 2018 we need to increase our hall hire session charge by £1.00, other alterations to the hire charges will be announced before the year end. However in addition to this we need to continue to utilise the hall more particularly at weekends with events like the Supper Club. Finally thanks also go to Chris Walliker for his freely given time in auditing our year end accounts and Sue Walliker for admirably looking after the hall bookings.

Chideock Parish Council News. Foss Orchard Car Park Charges. The ticket machine at Foss Orchard Car Park does not accept the new £1 coin and cannot be modified. The Parish Council is buying a second-hand machine from West Dorset District Council at a cost of £1,000 and it is hoped that the new machine will be in place before the end of the year. All income is set aside for maintenance of the car park area. Parking charges have not been reviewed since 2008 when charging was introduced. The installation of the new machine has provided an opportunity to review prices and the

12

Chideock Parish Council (continued) …. revised prices will come into effect when the new machine is in place.

20 minutes – 20p, no change 1 hour - was 30p, increase to 40p 4 hours – was 60p, increase to £1 All Day – was £1, increase to £2.

Season Ticket prices will also be reviewed. Help Still Needed. Help is needed to erect 3 sections of fencing in the Clapp’s Mead children’s play area. It will involve putting in 4 posts and fixing the fence to them – it may be necessary to cut one of the fencing sections down to size. The fencing is in the northern corner of the play area if you want to take a look, and it is to be erected behind the bench (which may need to be moved) to replace the old wire “fence” between the play area and the river. Come and Have Your Say at a Parish Council Meeting. The Parish Council exists to represent YOU, the residents of Chideock, Seatown and most of North Chideock, and is funded by a small part of the Council Tax which you all pay. There is a “Democratic Period” at every meeting. So, if you have got something on your mind which you think the Parish Council should know about and / or do something about, then come along and tell councillors about it. The matter may be considered at the appropriate point on the agenda for the meeting, or at a subsequent meeting. Parish Councils have few powers, but they can, and do, try to get those who do have the powers to do what needs to be done. During the winter Chideock Parish Council is meeting at 10:00 am on the last Tuesday of the month but the meetings will be at 7 pm when the lighter evenings are with us again. There is no meeting in August or December. Obscured Road Signs. A reminder that it is the responsibility of the owner or occupier of land or property to ensure that vegetation growing on their land does not obscure any road traffic sign. Clearing vegetation near a road, ditch, brook or river. Please will householders / landowners ensure that any bushes / trees / brambles etc. overhanging pavements / footpaths are cut back to allow pedestrians to safely walk along without going onto the highway to avoid this vegetation (This is particularly necessary on narrow lanes without footways.) Also, please ensure that, when strimming banks or pruning hedges / trees close to a public highway, ditch, brook or river, all detritus is removed and not allowed to block up drains, gullies and culverts or fall into the ditch, brook or river. Clear a Drain! When you are out walking on any of the side roads and you see a drain blocked or partially blocked by leaves, mud or other debris then please give it a bit of a clean with your boot or stick. DCC Highways are doing their best but there are an awful lot of drains in Dorset, not to mention potholes etc. If you think that the drain is blocked inside or find another Highway problem then let DCC Highways know, either by phone on 01305 221020 or via the
