Welcome to Chickenshed – and our 40th Festival Year! Our 40th year celebrations are in full swing! Special exhibitions, a newly commissioned artwork front of house, a commemorative book (still available to buy) and shows revived and reimagined from our long, illustrious history... The launch of our summer season sees even more for you to come and get involved with.

A huge highlight this season is our Studio Show, Paula’s Story, first performed in 1993. It tells the true life story of a young girl with cerebral palsy and her parents who fight against all the odds for Paula and her emerging talents to be heard and appreciated. This very much reflects Chickenshed’s spirit and will be a moving experience for all involved, as well as those seeing the play for the first time.

The celebratory atmosphere continues - a free summer festival in partnership with Enfield Council taking place at Chickenshed in June; a huge Tales extravaganza including performances and workshops at Tales Big Day Out, the new and spectacular Tales summer show, London Bridges; and workshops for children that will keep them entertained and inspired during the holidays.

This season we also bring you theatre created by our young people and students, who have been working hard on their courses all year, and which is only open to the public once a year. We have entertainment with our increasingly popular jazz, comedy and music nights, and last but not least, our workshops for adults who have an interest in performing or singing, or both, return.

Get involved with Chickenshed this summer!

Enjoy a coffee and light snack, a delicious Mediterranean-inspired lunch or evening meal, or simply sample from a carefully selected range of juices, wines and beers.

Restaurant and bar open from 9am Monday - Saturday and Sundays when there is an event. To reserve a table call 020 8440 2221

Paula’s Story She had to fight and right from the start that’s what she did

Page 5: Chickenshed summer 2014 season brochure

When Paula is born with cerebral palsy, medical experts tell the family there is no hope of her ever learning or understanding anything. Spurred on by the love for their daughter, and convinced that there is a connection and understanding there, Paula’s parents fight for her to be appreciated as something more than a cerebral palsy statistic. Against all odds, it emerges that Paula can not only understand what goes on around her, but is able to express her own thoughts poetically.

Set in the late 1970s and ‘80s, Paula’s Story tells of an incredible journey of love, courage and commitment to the belief that every human being has the right to be nurtured. It tells of the magical breakthrough moment when mother and daughter communicate for the first time, through to the discovery and blossoming of Paula’s talent as a poet, writer and lyricist.

The fight for all humans to be acknowledged for what they can do runs to the core of Chickenshed’s ethos, making this play as relevant today as it was when first performed in 1993.

The Story of Paula’s StoryTue 6 May | Mon 12 May 6.30pm (30mins pre-show)Studio Theatre to ticket holders of that evening’s performance

Join the immense creative partnership of Chickenshed’s founders Mary Ward and Jo Collins and writer-in-residence Paula Rees for an informal and insightful discussion before the evening performance on Tuesday 6 May or Monday 12 May.

The trio will chat about how they came to dramatise Paula’s true life experiences, and the continued relevance of Paula’s Story to Chickenshed in its 40th year. Guests will also have the chance to ask questions.

We’re not just proud to be 40 years old. We’re proud to have been in Enfield for 40 years. Without the support of Enfield Council we wouldn’t have secured the land for our beautiful theatre. So what better way to celebrate than with a joint, free, family festival?

We’re throwing open the doors to our building and gardens, inviting festival-goers to spend time with us to sample music, performance and crafts from Chickenshed, and arts groups from around the Borough.

Johannes Factotum is a story collector who lives on one of London’s bridges. From there he sees some of the most magical stories from around the world being brought to his city. Johannes wants to make sure these stories are re-told far and wide across London, starting with the London Bridges audience.

London Bridges is a colourful introduction to the power of stories that will immerse children in an enchanting world of puppetry, rhyme, song and language. A world that they will leave wanting to re-tell the stories themselves.

Participants will learn the art of storytelling from the London Bridges cast across three half-day workshops. All the familiar Tales from the Shed techniques will be used including movement, singing, improvisation and puppetry in order to create and tell stories, and there will also be the opportunity for children to have their own story brought to life by the whole workshop team. Parents and friends will be invited on the final afternoon to see a performance.

Chickenshed’s 40th year anniversary also marks the 100th anniversary of the First World War. Our Youth Theatre has reflected on this and on what war and conflict means to them today. Using World War One as a start point, The Ever-Popular War Show takes in what this conflict did to a generation of young people, and how current conflicts are affecting youth today.

This is a chance for the public to see our inspirational 13-21 age group perform a piece they have devised together using Chickenshed’s characteristic style.
