Whether it’s the lure of The Windy City, or the opportunity to gain CE credits while learning from an excellent faculty as designed by Dr. Jon Suzuki, ICOI’s 2014 meeting in Chicago continues to attract significant audiences. With over 1,200 doctors, auxiliary and corporate representatives attending this symposium focusing on the implant prosthetic discipline, delegates to the General Session were exposed to lectures dealing with the challenging but compelling theme, “Implant Failures”.

The symposium got off to a perfect start with several well attended pre-symposium workshops given by our sponsors. We want to take this opportunity to thank our GOLD Sponsor ZEST ANCHORS and our SILVER Sponsors: BIOHORIZONS, CONSULT PRO, DENTIS,

DENTSPLY, MISCH INT’L IMPLANT INSTITUTE and SALVIN Dental Specialties.

Thursday afternoon’s opening lecture was delivered by Dr. Randolph Resnik who spoke on Solutions to Mal-Positioned Implants and Migrating Implants. Dr. Aldo Leopardi’s presentation dealt with Prosthetic Management

After the completion of ICOI’s Chicago meeting on Saturday, August 23rd, a special event was held to honor Dr. Carl Misch. Over 400 family members, colleagues and friends were in attendance. The original concept was suggested by Dr. Hilt Tatum to “celebrate this wonderful man.”

Everyone in attendance supported this event as did corporate friends from Root Laboratory, Salvin Dental and BioHorizons.

Carl’s just released book on implant prosthodontics was available at this event and Carl personally signed many copies and book plates. The ICOI, the AAID and the AO informed their members about this unique function which included all of Carl’s children.

Of note, American Dental Association president Dr. Charles Norman, coincidentally an ICOI member, presented the ADA Distinguished Service Award to Carl. He stated that this is the ADA’s highest honor and recognizes a substantial contribution to his dental colleagues and dentistry itself.

Carl, congratulations.

Prior to packaging and terminal sterilization, every lot of enCore® 70/30 Combination Allograft is tested in vitro for a minimum threshold of BMP-2. All lots that pass this initial test then undergo a final post-sterilization in vivo

osteoinduction assay in the athymic rat model* to verify their osteoinductive potential. Any lot that fails either test is not released.

enCore® 70/30 Combination Allograft combines the synergistic characteristics of slowly resorbing, space-maintaining mineralized

cortical bone with osteoinductive demineralized matrix to provide an optimized environment for the regeneration of vital bone.

Our community is mourning the loss of a dear friend. Yahia “John” Ismail passed away on May 26, 2014 after falling in his

house. Born in Alexandria, Egypt in 1938 and a graduate from the Cairo University, School of Dentistry in 1959, he moved to the US in 1962 where he obtained a DMD, MS, Prosthodontic certificate and PhD (psychology) at the U. of Pittsburgh. There, he met his wife of 45 years, Launa, and had two sons, Alan and Zane. His family has now grown to include many grandchildren. In addition to being a wonderful family man and a very generous human being, John dedicated his life to his profession. He was Professor Emeritus at Pittsburgh and was most influential in our field during the 30 years he spent as the Chairman of the Dept. of Prosthodontics, where he was also Director of the Prosthodontics Residency program from 1974 until he retired in 2004. In 1983, at a time when Implant Dentistry was still taking its first faltering steps in the academic world, John had the vision to create a unique full time one year residency program in Oral Implantology, one of only two in the whole country (the other one being in Loma Linda, Ca). The students, many of whom are now prominent educators in the Oral Implantology profession, and the heads of graduate prosthodontics programs around the country, had the opportunity to learn both surgical and prosthetic aspects of Implant Dentistry and were uniquely trained at a time when much of the information was provided through manufacturer courses. John made sure his students were provided with the best technology available at the time (MRI, CT, and several implant systems for evaluation) and a close relationship with the Eye and Ear Hospital of Pittsburgh provided even greater exposure to advanced reconstruction.

In the 1980s and early 1990s, when many in our profession still doubted the predictability of Implant Dentistry, he was at the forefront of research and under his

guidance, Master’s theses addressed cutting edge topics such as 3D finite element stress analysis of different implant designs, the use of CT imaging to create stereo lithographic models for the fabrication of custom design implants. As ICOI President, Dr. Ismail was most influential in guiding the ICOI in an academic direction. The impact of this accomplishment is absolutely still relevant today. Quite a legacy! John encouraged research, publications and was very generous to his students, taking them to several conferences each year. He was at the forefront of our field, even patenting a new implant design and always looking to advance technology. Under his guidance, more than 40 Master’s theses were written in addition to numerous PhD dissertations. In addition to heading the Dept. of Prosthodontics, John was Director of International Affairs and graduate education for the Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine from 1995 till 2001, Director of Academic Affairs during the same period, and served on several councils for the ADA. His commitment to organized Implantology education was the reason for presiding over the First Predoctoral Curriculum Guidelines in Implant Dentistry meeting, representing 47 US Dental schools in 1989, a program adopted and published by the ADEA in 1990.

In addition to being the mentor everyone would love to have, John’s human side was no less amazing. He was a generous man, sincerely caring about the well-being of his students, family and colleagues. For those of us who knew him, we can each recall one particular occasion to be thankful to “the gentleman” he was. No doubt, I chose “Pitt” as the school for my Prosthodontic program because of John’s invitation to join his family for Thanksgiving dinner (my first), while I was interviewing, because he didn’t want me to be alone in a strange city and took me along to his wife’s family’s home.

John was no less generous with our ICOI organization, sharing his time and energy with Ken Judy and Carl Misch to advance

our field, spending countless hours promoting our field, serving as ACOI, IPS and ICOI Board member and President, and being on the Editorial board of the International Journal of Oral Implantology and then Implant Dentistry.

Not only an excellent educator and researcher leading the Prosthodontics Department at Pittsburgh, and authoring numerous articles, John lectured tirelessly nationally and internationally and created many friendships for our organization. He was well loved by our international friends who honored him in return with numerous awards, accolades and honorary professorships. To name a few, John was a Fellow of the ACD, ICD, Royal College of Medicine, was honored internationally for directing implant training in Europe, Asia (China, Israel, Libya, Kuwait, Egypt, Turkey), Argentina and so on. He was particularly proud of being a Grand Prior of the Sovereign Order of St John, Knights of Malta.

He was a true Ambassador for our field with an innate ability to bridge differences and makes everyone feel included. His drive to be involved and improve the community never left him. After 30 years in Pittsburgh, in 2005, he moved to Las Vegas, NV where, I quote, he “tried and rejected retirement.” In addition to developing a successful practice, he taught at the Roseman Dental School and organized the ACD Nevada section. It is obvious John could not stay too far from his beloved profession. I had the pleasure of seeing him last during the 2013 ICOI winter meeting in Las Vegas, vivacious, full of projects and always looking for progress. The memories are all coming back, thank you John for all you have done for us. No words can explain losing our godfather.

Implant Dentistry Research and Education Foundation (IDREF)The concept of IDREF as an integral part of the ICOI was conceived of in 1993 by Dr. Carl Misch and Martha Warren Bidez, Ph.D. at the ICOI World Congress in Istanbul, Turkey. They entrusted me with the task of development. Since that time IDREF has donated over $3.5 million to a wide variety of mission based initiatives. The efforts of many of our members and others, working together, have succeeded. In addition, ICOI’s commitment to the future of IDREF is evidenced by the current combined $2,500,000 balance in IDREF’s endowment investment accounts and checking account for approved disbursements.

Recently, Dr. Martha Warren Bidez was appointed by our Executive Committee to chair IDREF’s Scientific Advisory Board (SAB), succeeding our President, Dr. Jon Suzuki. The SAB makes decisions about grant submissions and appropriate disbursements. Currently at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Dr. Bidez is the Executive Director, Division of eLearning and Professional Studies and Professor and Graduate Program Director, Master of Engineering-Advanced Safety Engineering and Management.

When Dr. Bidez was briefed on SAB activities, her initial reaction was that we have quite a positive legacy to maintain and she emphasized her desire to expand our reach as the ICOI and IDREF grow together.
