Wealth managers, broadly defined, are thoseindividuals who help you manage yourfinancial world and/or implement aspects ofyour financial strategies. Common examplesof wealth managers are financial advisors,financial planners, investment advisors,tax advisors, estate planning attorneys, etc.

With more than 31,000 wealthmanagers(2) in the Chicagoland area, howdo you find someone who listens to you,represents your interests and operateswith an emphasis on integrity and service?Chicago magazine can help. The magazineformed a partnership with CrescendoBusiness Services to find out whichwealth managers scored highest in overallsatisfaction.

The Selection Process

Crescendo administered a survey, by mailand phone, to approximately 1 in a high-net_worth households(3) (over 250,000households) and all identified FINRAregistered representatives (over 15,500financial services professionals) within theChicagoland area.

On the surveys, recipients were askedto evaluate only wealth managers whomthey know through personal experienceand to evaluate them based upon ninecriteria: customer service, integrity,knowledge/expertise, communication,value for fee charged, meeting of financialobjectives, post-sale service, quality ofrecommendations and overall satisfaction.

Both positive and negative evaluationswere included in the scoring, and only

wealth managers with more than five yearsof experience in the financial servicesindustry were considered.

Next, each wealth manager wasreviewed for regulatory actions, civil judiciaiactions and customer complaints as reportedby FINRA, the SEC, the State Board ofAccountancy and the State Bar.

Then, before finalizing the Iist, wealthmanagers were reviewed by a blue ribbonpanel comprised of individuals from withinthe financial services industry. Althoughpanelist comments were incorporated intothe final score, safeguards were built into thereview process to reduce the abiiity ofpanelmembers to influence the composition of thefinal list on the basis of company affiliation.

An Elite Award

The resulting list of 2010 FIVE STAR WealthManagers is an elite group, representingIess than 2 percent of the wealth managersin the Chicagoland area. Only 455 of thetop-scoring wealth managers made thisyeart list. For a more user-friendly listing,wealth managers have been grouped basedupon their primary financial service. Eachwealth manager has also listed up to threeadditional financial services that theyprovide their clients.

Although this list will certainly bea useful tool for anyone looking for helpin managing their financial world orimplementing aspects of their financialstrategies, it should not be consideredexhaustive. Undoubtedly, there are manyother excellent wealth managers who,for one reason or another, are not on thisyear's list.
