What is "Priesthood Sunday"?

Priesthood Sunday, the last Sunday of October, is a special day set aside to honor the priesthood in the United States. It is a day to reflect upon and affirm the role of the priesthood in the life of the Church as a central one.

In the wake of the clergy sex abuse scandal, there has been concern that the image of all priests has been tainted by the actions of a few. Priesthood Sunday sends a mes-sage to all that the sins of a few do not reflect the innocent majority, and that the parish priest, as the instrument of Christ's ministry on earth, is loved and respected by those in the parish community.

This nationwide event is coordinated by the USA Council of Serra International. It is sponsored by the USA Council of Serra International and the Serra International Foundation.

What happens on Priesthood Sunday?

The lay faithful of all parishes in the country develop their own special way of marking the day and honoring their parish priests both at Mass and other parish events, such as social celebrations and school activities.

Priesthood Sunday was designed to be an event led by the laity, but your parish priest can participate by talking about how he experienced and answered his own calling, the need for vocations to keep the priesthood vital, and about priests who have inspired him.

Priesthood Sunday will also offer an opportunity for priests and their parishioners to build a stronger working relationship for the future. Together, they can dialogue to take an honest look at the challenges of the future and how they can collaborate to meet those challenges as a united force.

What is the USA Council of Serra International?

The USA Council of Serra International is an organiza-tion of lay men and women whose mission is to foster and affirm vocations to the ministerial priesthood and vowed religious life in the USA. More than 11,500 Serrans in over 300 clubs nationwide collaborate with their bishops, parishes and vocation directors to fulfill this mission. All Saints Day Celebration Our Sacred Heart and St. Mary’s Religious Education Schools, along with Youth Ministry of both parishes are organizing All Saints’ Day Celebration on grand scale on Sunday, October 31st. There will be role play in class rooms by High School Students, Procession to church, and special Holy Mass. All Souls Day Celebration We will remember the deceased members from our fami-lies and community with Holy Mass and special prayer service at Maywood Church on Saturday, October 30th at 10:00 A.M. ഈ njായറാ ഹാേലാവിനും, തിങ്കളാ സകല വിശുദ്ധ രുെട തിരുന്നാളും. െചാവവ്ാ ലത്തീൻ സഭാ പഞ്ചാംഗ പര്കാരം സകല മരിച്ചവരുെട ഓർമ്മയും ആചരിക്കുകയാണേലല്ാ. അേമരി ക്കയിൽ നാം കുടിേയറും മുൻപ് േകൾക്കാതിരുന്ന, നേമ്മ സംബ ന്ധിച്ചു വിചിതര്മായ, ആേഘാഷമാണ് ഹാേലാവിൻ. എന്നാൽ ഇവിെട വളരുന്ന കുട്ടികൾക്ക് നമ്മുെട ഓണംേപാെല െചറു പര്ായം മുതൽ സേന്താഷം പകരുന്ന അവസരമാണ് പിശാചു ക്കെള അനുകരിക്കുന്ന ഹാേലാവിൻ. അേമരിക്കയിെല കച്ചവട ക്കാർക്കാകെട്ട പണെക്കാ ിനുള്ള സുവർണ്ണാവസരവും. േവണ്ടതര് പരസയ്ം ന ി അവർ അതു ശരിക്കും മുതെലടുക്കുന്നുമുണ്ട്.

പെണ്ടേങ്ങാ ജീവിച്ചുെവന്നു കരുതെപ്പടുന്ന മാേവലി തമ്പുരാൻ എന്ന രാജാവിെന്റ ഐതീഹയ് കഥയാണേലല്ാ ഓണത്തിെന്റ പശ്ചാത്തലം. അതുേപാെല ഹാേലാവീനും പര്ാചീന യൂേറാപ്പിെല അതിപുരാതനമായ അയൺ എ ജിെല (ഉരുക്കു യുഗത്തിെല) മതവിശവ്ാസത്തിലാണു േവരൂന്നി നില് ക്കുന്നത്. മനുഷയ്ൻ ഇരു മ്പുെകാണ്ടു ആയുധങ്ങളും ഉപകരണങ്ങളും നിർമ്മിച്ചു തുടങ്ങിയ കാലഘട്ടമാണ് അയൺ എ ജ്.

പൗരസ്തയ്ർക്ക് ഹാേലാവിൻ പാരമ്പരയ്ം ഇലല്ാതിരുന്നതുെകാ ണ്ടാണ് , പൗരസ്തയ് സഭകളിൽ അമ്പതു േനായമ്പുമായി ബന്ധെപ്പ ടുത്തി, ശുദ്ധീകരാത്മാക്കളുെട തിരുന്നാൾ അമ്പതു േനായമ്പിനു തേല െവള്ളിയാ യും സകല വിശുദ്ധരുെട തിരുന്നാൾ ഉയിർപ്പു കഴിഞ്ഞുവരുന്ന െവള്ളിയാ യുമായി ആചരിച്ചുവരുന്നത്. സീേറാ മലബാർ സഭ കേത്താലിക്കാ സഭയിെല 22 പൗരസ്തയ് സഭക ളിൽ ഉൾെപ്പട്ടതായതിനാൽ നാം ആചരിേക്കണ്ടത് ആ ദിവസ ങ്ങളിലാണ് . എന്നാൽ നാം ഇേപ്പാൾ പരിണാമഘട്ടെമന്ന നില യിൽ രണ്ടു പാരമ്പരയ്പര്കാരമുള്ള ദിനങ്ങളും ആചരിക്കുന്നു.

ഹാേലാവിൻ എന്ന പദത്തിെന്റ അർത്ഥം സകല വിശുദ്ധ രുെട തിരുന്നാളിനു തേലന്നു ൈവകിട്ട് എന്നാണ് . അതായത് All-Hallows-Even = Evening before All Saints Day. ഈ േപര് പതിനാറാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൽ േസ്കാട് ലന്റിലാണ് ആവിർഭവിച്ചത്. ഹാേലാവിൻ ഒരു ൈകര്സ്തവ ദിനമലല്. കാരണം മരിച്ചവരിെല പാപികൾ പിശാചുക്കളാകുെമന്നു സഭ പഠിപ്പിക്കുന്നിലല്. ആദി യിൽ പിഴച്ചു േപായ മാലഖമാരാണ് പിശാചുക്കളായത്.

മാരക പാപത്തിൽ മരിച്ചവർ സവ്ർഗ്ഗരാജയ്ം അവകാശമാക്കു കയിലല്. ലഘുപാപത്തിൽ മരിച്ചവരാകെട്ട സവ്ർഗ്ഗത്തിെന്റ പൂർണ്ണ തയിെലത്തുവാൻ കാലൈദർഘയ്മുണ്ടാകും. ശുദ്ധീകരണത്തിെന്റ ആ നാളുകൾ കുറച്ച് എതര്യും േവഗം നിതയ് സമ്മാനത്തിെന്റ സമ്പൂർണ്ണതയിൽ എത്തിക്കുവാനാണ് നാം പര്ാർത്ഥനയും പര്ായ ശ്ചിത്തവും ദാനധർമ്മവും വഴി അവർക്കുേവണ്ടി പാപ പരിഹാരം നടത്തുന്നത്. നാം അവെര അനുസ്മരിച്ചു പര്ാർത്ഥിക്കുന്നതിനു മെറ്റാരു കാരണം ശുദ്ധീകരണസ്ഥലത്തിേലാ സവ്ർഗത്തിേലാ ആകെട്ട, നെമ്മ നന്നായി അറിയുകയും നെമ്മ േസ്നഹിക്കുകയും െചയയ്ുന്ന അവർക്ക് നമുക്കുേവണ്ടി ൈദവസന്നിധിയിൽ

േകരള പശ്ചാത്തലത്തിൽ നാം പര്ാധാനയ്ം ന ിേപ്പാരുന്നത് ശുദ്ധീകരാത്മാക്കളുെട ദിവസത്തിനാണ് . കാരണം, നെമ്മ നാമാ ക്കി മാറ്റുവാൻ, നമുക്കുേവണ്ടി തയ്ാഗം സഹിച്ച നമ്മുെട പൂർവവ്ിക േരാടുള്ള പര്തിനന്ദിയും േസ്നഹശുശര്ൂഷയും ആദരവുമാണ് നാം അന്നു പര്കടമാക്കുന്നത്. അേമരിക്കയിെല ലത്തീൻ സഭയിൽ സകല വിശുദ്ധരുെട തിരുന്നാളിനാണു കൂടുതൽ പര്ാധാനയ്ം. ലത്തീൻ സഭയിൽ അതു കടമുള്ള ദിവസമാണ് .

മതപരമലല്ാത്ത ഹാേലാവിനും കര്ിസ്തീയാചരണങ്ങളായ സകല വിശുദ്ധരുെട തിരുന്നാളും ശുദ്ധീകരാത്മാക്കളുെട ദിനവും അടുത്തടുത്തു വരുേമ്പാൾ ഇവയിൽ ഏതിനാണു നാം പര്ാധാനയ്ം ന േകണ്ടത്? ഹാേലാവിൻ ഒഴിവാക്കിയാൽ കുട്ടികൾക്ക് പര്യാ സമാകും. എങ്കിലും പിശാചുക്കളുെട േവഷം ധരിക്കുവാനാേണാ വിശുദ്ധെര അനുകരിക്കുവാനാേണാ നാം നമ്മുെട കുഞ്ഞുങ്ങെള േപര്ാത്സാഹിപ്പിേക്കണ്ടത്? േചരതിന്നുന്നവരുെട നാട്ടിൽ െചലല്ു േമ്പാൾ േചരയുെട നടുമുറി തിന്നണെമന്നു പറയുേമ്പാെല ഹാേലാ
